Broonie makes exit

Cowden have parted company with Graeme Brown by mutual consent. The 28-year old, who is a lawyer in Glasgow, was finding it difficult to combine his work commitments with training through in Fife.

“I would like to thank Graeme for his efforts. He will always be remembered fondly at this club and we wish him all the best”, said Danny Lennon.

‘Broonie' re-joined the club last January from Alloa Athletic for his 2nd spell at Central Park and scored once from 17 appearances (9 of those as a sub).

The Blue Brazil Hall of Fame inductee originally joined Cowden as a 16-year old from Broomhall Saints in 1997. The talented forward quickly made his way into the 1st team and is one of the few players to have scored for Cowden whilst just 16 - he also found time to score 18 goals in 24 games for the under 19s in his debut season. ‘Broonie' became the first ever Cowden player to score more than 50 league goals and make more than 200 league appearances before moving onto to Ayr United in January 2004. A true Cowden legend.

All the best Graeme from everyone at Central Park. (3 July 2009)

Blue Brazil back at work

It was back to work for the Blue Brazil last week as the squad returned for pre-season training on Tuesday and Thursday night. The squad also took part in a double session over the weekend at Beath High and new signing Gareth Wardlaw joined up with his new team mates along with Kenny Adamson and Brian Fairbairn, who have both recovered from their respective injuries that forced the pair to miss the end of last season.

“It has been a short break for us but it was great to get back out on the training field. The boys have looked after themselves and are in good spirits”, said Danny Lennon.

“I am still looking to add to the squad and have targets in mind. In addition, we will have a number of trialists training with us over the summer.”

The pre-season friendly programme kicks off on Saturday with a run out against Partick Thistle at Peffermill. Three further games have been fixed up and Lennon is hoping to confirm two more fixtures shortly.

Lennon will also take his squad to St. Andrews for a weekend training camp in mid July as the preparations for the new season - which starts on Saturday 25th July with a visit to face Peterhead in the 1st round of the MG ALBA CUP - hot up. (29 June 2009)

Mackay out after op

Danny Mackay will be out of action for 6-9 months after injuring his cruciate against East Stirling in the 1st leg semi-final play off game in May. The youngster underwent a successful operation earlier this month and will now face a spell on the sidelines as he undergoes rehabilitation.

Wardlaw pens deal

Danny Lennon made his first pre-season signing this afternoon after securing the signature of former Raith Rovers and Ayr United striker Gareth Wardlaw on a one-year deal. The 30-year old verbally agreed a deal with Lennon last weekend but was only able to put pen to paper following his return from holiday.

Wardlaw joined Raith Rovers last summer, after turning down a new contract from promotion rivals Ayr United, and played his part in the Stark's Park's 2nd Division title win. The powerful striker was in demand again this summer after Rovers released him but opted to make the move to Central Park.

The Fifer started out with local amateur side Burntisland Shipyard where he was a prolific scorer. His performances for the Scottish amateur international side - 9 goals from 11 caps - earned a move to Ayr United in 2004 where he spent 3 and a half seasons. (15 June 2009)

Youth star organises charity event

Under 19s prospect Scott McCrindle has organised a charity football match on Thursday 18th June (kick-off 12pm) and a netball match on Friday 19th June (kick-off 12pm) in order to raise funds for Ward 17 at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy. Scott, who can play on the right side of defence or midfield, was diagnosed with leukaemia in January 2009 and was given essential care and support by the staff at Ward 17.

Both events will take place at Woodmill School in Dunfermline and entry is 50 pence on each day. Scott has also arranged a cake and candy bake sale (at 10.50am on both days at Woodmill High School Crush Hall) and there will be a raffle with tickets on sale at both events - £1 per strip. Scott is looking for donations and items for the auction and can be contacted at scottmc8@hotmail.co.uk

"I was diagnosed with leukaemia in January and I would like to thank the staff at Ward 17 at the Victoria Hospital for the care and support they gave me at this difficult time in my life", said Scott.

"Please come along and show your support for Ward 17 and help raise much needed funds. Also any donations or items for the auction would be much appreciated.

"My recovery is coming on really well and I have three to four weeks left of treatment. Then I go onto two and a half years of tablets. I hope to be back at training with the club in January of next year."

"I have really enjoyed my two and half seasons with Cowden and can't wait to get back playing football. Danny Lennon (Manager) and Bobby Paterson (Head of Youth Development) have been superb to me and have stood by me through this, and have kept in constant touch."

Get along to Woodmill School and support Scott and this good cause by offering a donation for a prize for the raffle.

Scott signed for the club in 2006 from Woodside Colts - where he won numerous league titles and cups as well as a host of player of the year awards - and impressed enough to be offered a 2-year full-time contract a year later. The 18-year old has featured a number of times for the reserves and spent the earlier part of last season on loan to Tayport Juniors and then Oakley United. (11 June 2009)

Planning for the new season well underway

Season 2008/09 may be barely over but the focus is already firmly on the new campaign with the squad returning for pre-season training in just over two weeks time.

The team made massive strides forward last season, after Manger Danny Lennon was faced with a massive re-building exercise following relegation, but were left bitterly disappointed after narrowly losing out on promotion.

Despite the disappointing end to the season, there is no need for major surgery this summer with the vast majority of Lennon's talented young squad signed up for the new campaign. The manager is looking to add three or four new faces to his pool with a deal for a higher league forward already verbally agreed.

Lennon reflected on his first season as a manager and his burning desire to continue improvements on the park, learn lessons from last season, and go one better this time around.

"My first season as a manager has been a roller coaster with many ups and downs over the course of the year", said Lennon.

"We had a poor start to the league campaign but recovered well and went on a fantastic unbeaten run which took us clear at the top of the league. Unfortunately a dip in form and injuries hit us at a crucial stage of the season and ultimately cost us promotion.

"Losing out on promotion on penalties was desperately disappointing and I'm gutted for the players, everyone at the club and especially the supporters. To lose out first on the title and then after four games in the play-offs has been a double blow. You can either be badly effected by it or learn from the experience and come back stronger.

"The objective at the start of the season was promotion and as manager I take full responsibility for not achieving that. However, we could not have come much closer and I believe that we made good progress on the park following relegation the previous year. The players can be proud of their efforts and we will come back from the experience of last season stronger with the aim of going one better this time around.

"The players have been first class for me and I feel we have the basis of a very good squad for next season but it's clear that we missed a bit of creativity and a goal scoring threat at times. I will be looking to address this over the summer and plan to bring in three or four new players. I have verbally agreed a deal with a 2nd division striker and have held talks with a number of targets.

"I have had a short break and recharged my batteries. The mood around Central Park is very positive and I can't wait for the challenges that will face us in the new campaign. Preparations for the new season are well under way with the squad returning for pre-season training at the end of the month and the programme of friendlies kicks off on 4th July against Partick Thistle.

"Once gain I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to the fans. They have been a tremendous support to me and the team in my first season as a manger, from the fans who helped out around the club last summer to those who traveled many miles to follow the team.

"I would also like to record my appreciation of my staff, who work tirelessly behind the scenes, and also Jim Methven and the Board of Directors who provided great support last season." (7 June 2009)

Chairman resigns

Cowdenbeath Football Club Chairman Jim Methven resigned his position last week after almost 12 months in the role for "personal reasons". Mr Methven was appointed as chairman following relegation at the end of season 2007/08 and was instrumental in leading the Club through this difficult period, and stabilised the Club both on and off the park.

"I have taken the decision to resign as chairman for personal reasons", said Mr Methven.

"It has been a great honour to to have had this role with Cowdenbeath Football Club and it has been a very difficult decision to take at this time. Losing out on the league and then promotion was gut wrenching but securing the long-term future of the Club has always been my main objective .

"I'd like to thank everyone of the players for their efforts and also the staff at Central Park for their help throughout my period as chairman and, of course, the fans for the backing they gave the team last season , my best wishes are with everyone for the coming season ." (6 June 2009)

Message from the Chairman

I would like to personally thank the supporters, on behalf of myself and Danny Lennon, for their support throughout the season. The backing on Saturday was top class and it was encouraging that so many made the trip to Ochilview. The singing was fantastic and the support shown for the players at the end was humbling and I truly thank you for this.

We appreciate the end to the season has been a major disappointment for everyone and a bitter pill to swallow. The Manager has put together an excellent squad of young players and they have been a credit to Cowdenbeath Football Club. Unfortunately it was not to be this season but we will come back stronger from the experience.

We must now refocus and begin planning for next season. On the plus side we have key players on extended contracts for next season and there have been some really positive performances from the young lads who've made it into the 1st team this term. I'm sure with a few new signings we can strengthen and with your backing we can go one better next campaign.

Finally, I'd like to wish everyone a good summer and look forward to seeing you all at the pre-season games.

Play-off heartache for Cowden

Cowden lost out on promotion to the 2nd Division in the cruelest fashion after Stenhousemuir won 5-4 on penalties in the play-off final.

The contest remained goal less after 180 minutes and another 30 minutes of extra-time failed to separate the sides. The outcome of ten months of hard work came down to the lottery of penalties and one miss from 12 yards cost Cowden dear.

Cowden were the better team on the day and finished the season seven points clear of their opponents but Stenny held their nerve to book their place in the 2nd Division. Click here for the full match report and player ratings.

The team were clearly distraught aft full-time and the 800 plus Blue Brasilians in the 1530 crowd, who had given the team tremendous backing throughout, stayed behind to salute the magnificent efforts of their team.

Danny Lennon and his young team can hold their heads high after a season in which they gave their all and brought pride back to the club after relegation. A run of draws towards the end of the season cost Cowden the title and ultimately a season that had promised so much failed to deliver by the narrowest and cruelest of margins. It's now time to reflect on what could have been, learn lessons and come back even stronger next season.

Congratulations to Stenhousemuir Football Club and all the best in the 2nd Division next season. (23 May 2009)

Stenhousemuir v Cowdenbeath

It's the clash of the titans on Saturday afternoon when the Blue Brazil travel to Ochilview to face Stenhousemuir in a promotion showdown.

Both club's led the division for large spells of the campaign but the outcome of this game will determine who will join Dumbarton in the 2nd Division next season.

The Blue Brazil have an impressive record in promotion deciders in recent years. No one needs reminded of the 2-1 win over Elgin City on the last day of the 2005/06 season that secured the title. 5 years earlier a similar 2-1 last day victory - this time over promotion rivals Brechin City - won promotion to the 2nd Division. In 1991/92 Cowden travelled to Alloa needing a point to win promotion to the old 1st Division while the Wasps required a win. The game ended 0-0 to send Cowden up.

With the 1st leg ending in stalemate on Wednesday night, Saturday's encounter really is a cup final. Danny Lennon is looking for the same level of commitment and desire from his team but more composure on the ball.

“I thought we had a lot of the ball on Wednesday night but could have used possession much better", said Lennon.

"It was never going to be a classic but it's a different ball game on Satruday. We are going into the game all square and the best team on the day will secure a place in the 2nd Division.

"We know what to expect from Stenhousemuir. They are a big physical team and will be a danger from set plays. Our best chance is to play to our strength and play football on the deck. The pitch will suit us and we can take great confidence from recent performances at Ochilview.

"We've got to go with the same level of work rate and commitment, show a wee bit more composure and go out on the pitch and display what a good football team we are.

"Promotion was our aim at the beginning of the season and we could now be 90 minutes away from achieving just that.

“The fans have backed us all the way this season and deserve some success. Hopefully they will enjoy their day out and have something to celebrate at the end.”

Darren McGregor will miss the game after his red card on Wednesday but Derek Fleming has recovered from injury and rejoins the squad.

A large crowd is expected to embark on Ochilview for the promotion decider and as such segregation has been put in place at the request of the Police. Cowdenbeath supporters will be accommodated in the West Enclosure and fans are advised to arrive in plenty time for kick-off at 3pm.

Let's hope recent history repeats itself and the Blue Brazil are looking forward to 2nd Division football come Saturday night.

All to play for as 1st leg ends in stalemate

The battle for promotion hangs firmly in the balance as Cowden fought out a 0-0 draw with Stenhousemuir in the 1st leg of the Irn-Bru 2nd Division play off final and extended their unbeaten home run to 13 games.

The Blue Brazil opened the game on the offensive with a three pronged attack and John Gemmell and Paul McQuade came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 1st half.

The promotion hopefuls cancelled each other out as the game progressed but the game exploded into action with 8 minutes remaining as both sides finished the game with 10 men. First Stenny's Chris McLeod was dismissed for a second bookable offence and Darren McGregor also received his marching orders 6 minutes later after a harsh straight red card for a foul on Ian Thomson.

Gemmell with a close range header (pictured) and a pile driver from man of the match Jay Shields almost won the game for Cowden in the closing stages. Click here for the full match report and player ratings.

Cowden v Stenhousemuir

Cowdenbeath welcome Stenhousemuir to Central Park on Wednesday night (kick off 7.45pm) in the 1st leg of the Irn-Bru 2nd Division Play-off final.

The club's conclude the tie at Ochilview on Saturday and it's a winner takes all contest with promotion the bounty for the victor. Occasions in football don't come much bigger than this and Cowden manager Danny Lennon is looking for his side to go out and express themselves.

"I am delighted to be in the final and we are looking to grasp the opportunity with both hands", said Lennon.

"The fear of making a mistake can get to players in games like this but the message to the boys is relax and enjoy the occasion.

"Stenhousemuir are a difficult team to beat and they have had the upper hand over us this season. However, we have shown over the course of the term that we are a more than a match for anyone in this divison and have the right mentality to handle the big match occasion.

"The boys showed that character and leadership again on Saturday to recover from the early blow. They could have let their heads go down but they kept their shape and discipline fantastically well and deserved to progress over the two games.

"It's great to be in the final and I hope it's an occasion to remember for the fans. They have stuck with us through the highs and the lows and the players are determined to win promotion for them."

Derek Fleming will not be fit in time for Wednesday night and joins Kenny Adamson and Brian Fairbairn on the sidelines.

A return to the 2nd Division would be a remarkable turnaround for a club that was in turmoil following relegation only 12 months ago. The players have done the club and the fans proud this season, whatever the final outcome - get along to Central Park and Ochilview this week and get right behind them

Blue Brazil sign promising Australian teenager

Cowden have agreed a deal to bring promising 16-year old Australian Alfie Littler to Central Park, subject to international clearance.

The young midfielder spent a week on trial with the Blue Brazil earlier in the season and impressed enough to be offered a 2-year full-time contract, and will join up with the Blue Brazil Youth Academy from Brisbane City in June.

"Alfie came over from Australia with four other youngsters for a week long trial in April and really impressed us", said Bob Paterson, Head of Youth Development.

"We have high hopes for him and look forward to welcoming Alfie to Central Park at the end of June.

Paterson appealed for help from the local community to find accommodation for the young Australian:

"We are looking for digs for the lad and would ask anyone interested in helping out to get in touch."

Alfie is expected to arrive in Scotland in time for pre-season training on 22nd June 2009 so contact the club if you are interested in providing digs for a potential star of the future. Phone 01383 610166 or email bob.paterson@cowdenbeathfc.com for further details and terms on offer. (18 May 2009)

Football and music double header this weekend

It's an entertainment double header on Saturday 23rd May for fans of the Blue Brazil and the local music scene. First up is the battle of the heavyweights on Saturday afternoon at Ochilview when the Blue Brazil and Stenhousemuir conclude their contest for promotion to the 2nd Division, and at night Fife band Sergeant headline at Lochgelly Town Hall - hopefully it will be a day and night to remember for all Blue Brasilians.

McGregor books Cowden's place in final

A controversial late goal from Darren McGregor (goal mouth drama pictured) rescued a draw for Cowden and booked a deserved place in the Irn-Bru 2nd Division play-off final.

Cowden led 2-1 after the 1st leg but East Stirlingshire took only three minutes to level the scores. McGregor misplaced a header back to Hay and Brian Graham rounded the keeper to slot home into the empty net.

The home side took time to recover from the early blow as Shire had the better of the opening 45 minutes without overly troubling Hay.

Cowden found their feet after the break and both sides missed good chances with Mark Ramsay and John Armstrong coming particularly close for Cowden.

The Blue Brazil finished game on the ascendancy and found the all important equaliser with six minutes remaining after McGregor met a corner kick from the left and headed goalwards. Peat got a hand to the ball but the assistant referee signaled that it had crossed the line. Furious protests followed and Shire's Michael Bolochoweckyj and Sean Anderson were shown straight red cards.

Gemmell and Ramsay came close to finishing the contest as nine-man Shire held on.

Cowden will now face either Stenhousemuir or Queens Park in the final with the 1st leg at Central Park on Wednesday 20th May. (16 May 2009)

Cowden v East Stirlingshire

The Blue Brazil take a narrow lead into the second leg of the Irn-Bru 3rd Division play off semi-final when East Stirlingshire visit Central Park on Saturday after first half goals from John Gemmell (pictured) and Jay Stein.

The tie is on a knife edge with so much to play for but Cowden displayed their mettle with a terrific team performance on Wednesday and the 2-1 success in midweek was Cowden's fourth victory over the Shire this season.

Danny Lennon is taking nothing for granted and has urged his players not to take their foot off the gas:

"It was an excellent result. We played at a high tempo in the 1st half and looked dangerous every time we attacked. Half-time came at a good time for Shire as we had them on the ropes.

"The injury to Danny Mackay changed the game and we began to sit too deep and it was disappointing to concede.

"Unfortunately, Danny took a sore one and is out for the season. On the plus side it was very pleasing to see Paul McQuade and Derek Fleming back from injury.

"The win has given us a platform to build on for Saturday but it's only half-time and there is still much work to do."

A crowd of 605 turned up for the midweek clash and another big crowd is expected at Central Park on Saturday for a hugely important occasion for both sides.

Admission for the game is £10 for adults, £12 for parent and child, and £5 for concessions. (14 May 2009)

Advantage Cowden

John Gemmell and Jay Stein fired Cowden into a 2-1 first leg lead at Ochilview on Wednesday night as the team returned to form at this critical point of the season.

Shire had the early possession but the opening goal came for the Blue Brazil after only 12 minutes after . John Ferguson skinned his marker on the edge of the box and his cross eventually fell to John Gemmell who found the bottom corner of the net from 16 yards.

Jay Stein (pictured) doubled the lead 18 minutes later when he latched onto a ball from Mark Ramsay and blasted home a spectacular goal.

An injury to Danny Mackay disrupted Cowden's rhythm and Shire's pressure paid off when Andy Rodgers slotted past Davie Hay (62).

The home side had a few chances to get back on level terms but Cowden held firm with McGregor and Armstrong outstanding at the back. (14 May 2009)

East Stirlingshire v Cowden

There is going to be an electric atmosphere at Ochilview on Wednesday night when Cowden and East Stirlingshire come face-to-face for the second time in less than a week - this time in the 1st leg of the SFL Irn-Bru 3rd Division Play-off semi-final (kick off 7.30pm.)

It may have been a low-key affair at Ochilview on Saturday as Cowden and East Stirlingshire both fielded experimental line-ups but the victory helped the Blue Brazil leapfrog the Shire and secure a second place finish in the process - giving the Blue Brazil the perceived advantage of playing the second leg at home.

“The upcoming games against East Stirlingshire will be totally different affairs from Saturday with so much at stake”, said Danny Lennon.

“They will be cup semi-final type games and will be very edgy. We will be looking for a spark from our boys to win the tie and we need to take any opportunities that come our way.

“It was a great achievement from the boys to finish in second place but we're disappointed given where we were at one point. However, we are delighted to have a second bite at promotion and everyone at the club intends to make the most of it.

“Our aim at the start of the season was to win promotion back to the 2nd division and hopefully we can make the fans proud by delivering just that. We have come a long way since the disappointment of relegation last season and the boys have worked extremely hard all season.”

A large Cowden contingent is expected to make their way to Ochilview by road and rail on Wednesday and Lennon praised the fans for the support they had given the team over the course of the season:

“The fans have been fantastic all season and the players really appreciated the reception they got at the Supporters Club dance on Saturday night. I'm sure there will be the usual vociferous support for the boys on Wednesday night and hopefully we can reward our loyal fans with the right result.”

Mark Baxter, Darren McGregor, Danny Mackay, Jay Stein, John Dempster and John Gemmell (winner of the Supporters Club Player of the Year) come back into the squad after being rested on Saturday. Injury victims Paul McQuade and Derek Fleming could come back into contention for the play-offs but Brian Fairbairn and Kenny Adamson have been ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Supporters Club bus will depart Central Park at 6.15pm.

Last weekend's fixture may not have had any bearing on the destination of the league championship but the win will have boosted Cowden's confidence ahead of two crunch games against the same opposition. Lennon was delighted with the win and the performance of his youngsters:

“The young boys were not in the team to make up the numbers and they acquitted themselves very well. John Ferguson and Jamie Reid, in particular, impressed from the start. Ferguson showed great composure for his goals and caused them problems with his pace. He has a chance of being involved in midweek.

“We finished the game with seven teenagers on the park and the youngsters who came on as subs really helped us kick on and win the game.” (12 May 2009)

Supporters Club Annual Dance

The Supporters Club annual Player of the Year function was held at Bar 39 on Saturday evening.  The do was MC'd by Dave Tuson, David Allan and Sandy Ferguson of the Cowdenbeath Supporters Club with various fans being invited up to make the presentations.

This year it was John Gemmell who won the prestigious and venerable Central Fife Times Cowdenbeath Player of the Year trophy while Darren McGregor carried off no less than 3 of the Player of the Year trophies – Players' Player of the Year, Blue Brazil Online Player of the Year, and Fans' Player of the Year.  Davie Hay too was honoured more than once.

Supporters of the year were John Cameron and Aaron Tuson.  John has been a Cowden fan since the 1960s.  He was on the Committee of the Junior Supporters Club in the sixties, organised the Supporters' buses back then when he was just a teenager (plus the occasional Supporters train), helped build the boundary wall at Central Park in 1970 and in recent years raised a 5 figure sum for the club via Blue Brazil lottery sales.  Aaron Tuson by way of contrast is still just a teenager but he has already served on the Supporters Club committee for several years.   This season he helped along with other volunteers pre-season with the painting work at Central Park and then worked unpaid in the club's office for several months.  Recently, he has been one of the mainstays in running the club shop every matchday.

Following a suggestion by Ian Fraser, the Supporters Club had also decided to honour any Cowden player who made over 100 appearances for the club.  Davie Hay and Mark Baxter were thus the first to be so honoured as centenarians.  They were presented with plaques and were also both awarded Life Membership of the Cowdenbeath Supporters Club.

Danny Lennon too took the microphone to thank all the supporters on behalf of himself and the players.  Firstly, for inviting them along and also for their loyal support throughout the season even when things did not work out as desired towards the end.  He hoped that after the play offs we will have something to be proud off and assured the fans that the players would certainly be giving their all to earn promotion to Division 2.  Danny intimated that he and the players greatly appreciated the passionate support offered by the Cowden fans and long may that continue.  He also personally thanked some of many individuals behind the scenes who did such great work throughout the campaign:  On the club shop front there was John and Evelyn Anderson and the great efforts of the volunteers who ran the shop – Anne Weatherston, Aaron Tuson, Tommy Thomson and Derek Neilson; Ben Conway and Elaine Fotheringham for working as the ‘doormen'; Dave Tuson, David Allan, Sandy Ferguson, Stuart Juner and Ewan Dow on the Board; the owners David and Alex Brewster; chairman James Methven (who passed on his apologies for being unable to attend) for his support and commitment (just ask Dick Campbell!); local businessman Jim Paterson; and all the staff and players at Central Park.  Danny asked everyone to enjoy a great night and really hoped that things would go our way in the play offs to give us all something to celebrate in a fortnight's time.

Here is the full list of honours from the event.

Blue Brazil Online Player of the Year (Willie Mercer Trophy) – 1st Darren McGregor (8 man of the match awards), 2nd John Gemmell (5 man of the match awards), 3rd Joe Mbu (3 man of the match awards).

Feegsy double secures 2nd place

A double from teenage striker John Ferguson (pictured), making his first start for the club, helped the Blue Brazil overcome play-off rivals East Stirlingshire 2-0 and leapfrog the Shire in the process, to finish the league campaign in style with a creditable 2nd place.

Both sides rested several players with the play-offs just round the corner and Cowden finished the game with seven teenagers on the field as 1ten regulars were either rested or unavailable due to injury.

Cowden had the best of the opening 45 minutes with Ferguson and Graeme Brown coming close. The match looked to be heading for a stalemate, after Shire missed a couple of guilt-edged chances after the break, until Ferguson opened the scoring 12 minutes from time after coolly rounding the keeper. Ferguson, who has been with the club since the age of eleven, sealed the victory at the death with another deadly finish.

The sides now face each other in the semi-final of the SFL Irn-Bru 3rd Division play-off and the Blue Brazil have home advantage thanks to this weekend's victory. (9 May 2009)

Team mates - including Davie Cairns, Dennis Jack,Jim Moore and Davie Ross- from the all conquering promotion winning Cowden side of 1970 attended Central Park on Saturday and took in Cowden's home clash with Forfar Athletic. The reunion was organised by legendary skipper Andy Kinnell and members of the side - which played in the 1st Division under Andy Mathew - mingled with fans pre and post match in the club bar before moving onto Junction Bar.

The legends were joined by the Blue Brazil Dublin Supporters Club - who gave their usual vociferous backing throughout the game - on their annual visit to Central Park. The Irish contingent presented an award to Danny Lennon pre match and are pictured above with the legends.

The Dublin Supporters Club also presented one of their famous drums to Honourary Club Secretary Tom Ogilvie. In addition, Jim Methven presented signed shirts from the Craig Levein/Gary Kirk promotion era to Tom Ogilvie and Andy Mullen in recognition of their service to the football club (pictured).

Early goals are costly

Two goals in the opening four minutes handed the title to Dumbarton as Cowden had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Forfar Athletic - in a match watched by member of the 1970 promotion winning side and the Dublin Supporters Club.

The Blue Brazil knew this was a must win game and could not have got off to a worse start with Forfar racing into a quick 2 goal lead thanks to Kevin Gordon (3) and Johnny Russell (4).

Danny Lennon responded by introducing Marek Tomana and the Slovakian made an immediate impact as Cowden fought back. However, the main man was Jay Stein (pictured celebrating his first goal) as two wonderful efforts brought the Blue Brazil back on level terms before the interval. Stein (30) lobbed Ally Brown from an acute angle for the first and bettered it with a rocket into the top corner for his second ten minutes later.

Forfar - who needed a win to keep their faint play-off hopes alive - came closest in the opening spell of the 2nd half but Cowden went for broke in the last 20 minutes but, despite creating clear chances, could not find an allusive winning goal.

The Blue Brazil now face East Stirlingshire three times in a week with the final league game followed closely by the first round of play-off games. The management team, players and support will need to quickly dust themselves down and pull together for one last push for promotion. (2 May 2009)

Academy update

The under 19s completed their Scottish Football League campaign on Friday night with a resounding 2-0 win against East Stirling at Firs Park. The coaching staff made the decision to go with a young side this season and it was hard going for the youngsters earlier in the year, but the boys have come of age with an excellent finish to the season under the tutelage of Bob Paterson and Iain Jenkins.

John Ferguson (42) opened the scoring in the 1st half with his 7th goal of the season and 16-year old centre back Steven Bennett wrapped up the points after 57 mins.

TEAM: Murray Jackson, Connor Kane, Ross Galbraith, Steven Bennett, Peter Bradley, Kyle Miller (Ross Grant 68), Martyn Robinson, Mark Forbes, Rory Emslie, John Ferguson (Cyrus Moosavi 46), Chris King (Craig Stevenson 59). (1 May 2009)

Return of the Legends...and the Dubliners

This Saturday (2nd May) Cowdenbeath Football Club and the Supporters Club are absolutely delighted to welcome two special sets of visitors to Central Park for the match v Forfar Athletic. We would ask as many fans as possible to look in both before and after the game to make our visitors welcome.

Firstly, ex-Cowden skipper and local legend Andy Kinnell has organised a reunion for around a dozen of his former Cowden teammates from that great Cowden era of 1st Division football when Andy Matthew was the club manager. There is no formal event planned – the lads are just looking forward to catching up with each other and taking in the game. They would also be delighted to meet fans both old and new who may want to recall the good old days at Central Park. So please come along and join them pre and post match - the bar is open to both home and away fans from 1.30pm.

Secondly, our Dublin Supporters Club will be in attendance and they of course are renowned for the vociferous and colourful backing they give the club. After the match, they intend to present an award. So once again come along for the craic and a pint with the boys. (29 April 2009)

Reserve League Cup

The second XI bowed out of the League Cup on Tuesday night after losing for a second time against our West Fife neighbours.

The Pars opened the game at a blistering pace and were three goals up after just 24 minutes. It took them only five minutes to break the deadlock when a cross from the right by David Graham was met by Scott McBride who lashed a powerful shot into the home net from seven yards. The visitors then doubled their advantage after 12 minutes when Ross fed the ball to Rory Loy whose shot took a deflection off Robertson and spun past Jackson in the Cowden goal. We then fell further behind on 24 minutes when Scott Muirhead went on a run down the left wing before cutting in to fire home a low shot.

Two minutes from the break we reduced the deficit when a cross from Tomana was spilled by keeper Paterson and fell to John Dempster who fired home his sixth goal of the campaign for the reserves.

The scoring was completed with eight minutes to go when substitute Jordan Whyte shot home a rebound after Jackson had blocked an initial shot from McBride.

Final score: Cowdenbeath Res 1, Dunfermline Res 4.

TEAM: Murray Jackon, Jamie Reid, Scott Linton, Jon Robertson, John Armstrong, Danny Lennon, Gary Cennerazzo, Jay Shields, Graeme Brown (Derek Wallace 78), John Dempster (Callum Young 63), Marek Tomana (John Ferguson 63). Subs not used – Mark Forbes & Danny Mackay.

PFA Awards

Darren McGregor and Paul McQuade have both been nominated for the Professional Footballers Association Scotland 3rd Division Player of the Year award.

Darren (23) rejoined the club in the summer from Arniston Rangers after originally coming through the youth ranks at Central Park. He won a championship medal in 2006 but left Cowden after failing to hold down a regular 1st team place. The talented defender honed his skills in the juniors and came back to Central Park as a more mature and rounded player. He has only missed one game all season and has been a stand out at the back or in central midfield.

McQuade joined Cowden from local junior side Dundonald Bluebell having previously been on the books of both Dunfermline and Raith Rovers. The young striker has really come onto his own this season and has attracted the attention of higher league scouts with his pace, vision and goal scoring exploits. Has found the net 13 times this season despite missing chunks of the season through injury.

Four players have been nominated for the award and Bobby Barr (Albion Rovers) and Kevin Motion (Stenhousemuir) will compete with the Cowden duo. The candidates are chosen by fellow players and managers and winner will be announced a the Annual Awards Dinner in the Hilton Glasgow on Sunday 3rd May. Goo luck to both Darren and Paul. Montrose: Post match reaction

Cowden's defeat away to Montrose ended a long spell at the top of the league and handed the advantage to Dumbarton with two games remaining. Manager Danny Lennon was bitterly disappointed with the result but has no intention of giving up the fight:

“I thought we played ok in the 1st half and there were some very pleasing aspects to our play. However, the players forgot everything we spoke about at half-time and allowed Montrose to come back into the game.

“The goals we lost were poor and very uncharacteristic for us as our defence has been very resilient. The 1st goal was down to poor marking and the 2nd was another needless penalty.

“It was a very disappointing result. It has given the advantage to Dumbarton and means that we are now relying on others for the first time.

“I share the fans frustration at losing our lead at the top but what is gone is gone and we have to remain positive. We don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves as there is still a title to play for and promotion via the play-offs. It is my job to make sure that the players remain upbeat and and are prepared for the challenge ahead - starting at training on Tuesday.

“I need the players to dig deep for one another and show the necessary character to win promotion. We are relying on a number of talented but inexperienced young players and I need the experienced ones to help pull them through.

“We will now see how Dumbarton handle the pressure at the top but my only concern is winning the next two games. We need to make sure we get our own house in order and take it from there."

John Gemmell picked up an ankle knock but should be ok for Saturday and Marek Tomana is expected to feature for the reserves on Tuesday night. (27 April 2009)

Academy update

The under 19s bowed out of the League Cup as holders Raith Rovers came from behind to maintain their 100% record and progress to the semi finals.

After dominating the early play Cowden took a deserved lead after 20 minutes when John Ferguson slotted the ball home from close range.

The turning point of the game however came ten minutes from the break when Derek Wallace was red carded after bringing the advancing Bryce down as the Rovers front man headed for goal.

Nine minutes into the second half Callum Young (pictured) put us 2-0 up but the extra man advantage eventually saw Rovers stage a late comeback. From the kick off they broke up field with the ball eventually falling to Gary Thomson who reduced the deficit. With 65 minutes gone Jamie Mackie grabbed an equaliser tapping the ball home at the back post. Two goals in two minutes then gave the Kirkcaldy side the three points. Neil McCabe put them ahead after 75 minutes and two minutes later Lee Bryce sealed their comeback.

TEAM: Murray Jackson, Dean Brett, Ross Galbraith, Steven Bennett, Peter Bradley, Thomas O'Brien, Derek Wallace, Mark Forbes, Callum Young, John Ferguson, Chris King. Subs – Martyn Robinson, Kyle Miller, Rory Emslie & Connor Kane.

RAITH ROVERS: Ross Laidlaw, Daniel Carter, Craig wedderburn, Danny Main, Kevin Brown, Neil McCabe, Mark Whatley, Jamie Mackie, Gary Thomson, Tam Graham, Lee Bryce. Subs – Scott Adamson, James Drummond, Dean Elder & Ryan Aitken.

“We were very unfortunate to lose the game", said Bob Paterson, Head of Youth Development.

"We started well and were leading 2-0 but the sending off changed the game. We were on top up until that point but the man advantage told in the end against a very good and older Raith team."

The 19 complete their competitive fixtures for the season with a league game away to East Stirling - date still to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, the under 15s narrowly lost to Raith Rovers and the under 13s were beaten by Dumbarton. (27 April 2009)

Reserve League Cup

The Cowden second XI complete their League Cup group games on Tuesday night when local rivals Dunfermline Athletic are the visitors to Central Park with a 7 p.m. kick off.

It's a winner takes all game with a Cowden win seeing us winning a section, although a draw would see us move into the semi finals as runner up. The Pars meanwhile know that nothing less than a win will see them qualify.

The fixture will provide match practice for strikers John Dempster and Graeme Brown while Marek Tomana is expected to make his much anticipated return from injury. (27 April 2009)

Cowden started the game brightly and opened the scoring after only 8 minutes when John Gemmell fired home from close range. However, Montrose punished Cowden's inability to finish the game and goals from Steven Tweed and a Chris Hegarty penalty ensured a deserved home win.

The Blue Brazil now face an up hill task but with a home game against Forfar Athletic and a trip to East Stirling remaining it is all still to play for. (25 April 2009)

Academy update

The Blue Brazil kept up their challenge at the top of the SFL Youth League Cup Section 4 with a 3-1 win over their Arbroath counterparts.

Despite Cowden being well on top Arbroath opened the scoring and the score line remained that way at half-time.

Cowden's dominance continued after the break and the equaliser finally arrived on 57 minutes. Martyn Robinson crossed from the right for Dean Brett to head home. A 2nd goal was not long coming with Derek Wallace latching onto a through ball to fire Cowden into a deserved lead 4 minutes later. Chris King sealed the win late on to ensure an exciting end to the campaign.

Final score: Arbroath 19s 1, Cowdenbeath 19s 3.

TEAM: Murray Jackson, Kyle Miller, Ross Galbraith, Steve Bennett (Connor Kane 70), Peter Bradley, Mark Forbes, Martyn Robinson (Cyrus Moosavi 60), Dean Brett, Derek Wallace, Rory Emslie, Chris King.

“It was great to get the win and keep up our chances of qualifying for the semi-final but it it was the manner of the performance which was most pleasing - particularly in the 1st half", said a delighted Bob Paterson, Head of Youth Development.

"We controlled the play for large parts of the game and played some great football. The lead-up play which led to an effort coming back off the bar in the 1st half was absolutely fantastic.”

The 19s complete their section matches next Sunday with an away fixture against neighbours Raith Rovers. The top team will qualify for the semi-finals with Cowden, Rovers and Dundee all still in with a chance of progressing.

Meanwhile, the under 16s lost to St. Johnstone while the under 13s continued their improved form with a 5-2 victory over Stirling Albion. (19 April 2009)

Blue Brazil secure play-off place and remain top

The Blue Brazil clinched a play-off place on Saturday with battling display against title rivals Dumbarton as 10-man Cowden recorded a 4th consecutive draw in front of 1,181 fans to remain top of the league with three games remaining. David Hay was the hero with a penalty save but it was a real team display that would have made the five 1991/92 legends in the crowd proud.

Danny Lennon's side had comprehensively beaten Dumbarton in their last visit to Central Park but went into this game without the services of 6 key players - Kenny Adamson, Darren McGregor, Marek Tomana, Brian Fairbairn, Paul McQuade and Graeme Brown - and 39-year old Lennon even had to name himself on the substitutes bench.

The task was made even more difficult after losing Derek Fleming to injury after 34 minutes and Jay Shields dismissal with 20 minutes still to play. However, the makeshift side showed their mettle by matching the Sons every step of the way with teenagers Jon Robertson, Danny Mackay and Scott Linton standouts.

Dumbarton opened the game on the front foot and came close on a couple of occasions before passing up the best chance of the match. Joe Mbu made a rash challenge on Stevie Murray and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the stop. The pint sized winger took the kick himself but his poor effort was foiled by the magnificent David Hay in the Cowden goal.

The home side settled down and began to take the initiative and looked like the most likely winners until Jay Shields picked up a second yellow card after 72 minutes - despite winning the ball. Cowden redoubled their efforts and comfortably kept Dumbarton at bay.

Cowden v Dumbarton

The Blue Brazil face the first of four cup finals on Saturday when second placed Dumbarton make the trip to Central Park for the undisputed 3rd Division game of the day.

The big match ties in with Legends Day 2 - with over 60 fans booked in for hospitality with heroes from the 1991/92 promotion side - and the occasion promises to attract a bumper crowd. Make sure you are there to support the Blue Brazil.

Danny Lennon's side of 2008/09 have done the club proud this season and are more than capable of creating their own piece of history at the end of the campaign. The team have led the division since the beginning of the year and are unbeaten at Central Park since November. Everyone at Central Park is relishing the visit of Dumbarton and the big match atmosphere.

"We are all looking forward to the game with Dumbarton on Saturday", said Lennon.

"It's a massive game for both teams but we are not thinking about the title. No prizes will be won or lost at the weekend and our focus is only on the available three points.

"We have four World Cup finals between now and the end of the season and I am looking for my players to stand up and be brave. It is not a time for uncertainty or a lack of confidence. I can accept mistakes from players but not those who hide.

"I have a group of players who are born winners and I have total confidence in them. They just need to believe in themselves a bit more and remember why they are top of the league. No matter who plays on Saturday, they are good enough to go out and claim the points.

"I hope the fans enjoy the day. They have been terrific all season and I am sure everyone will pull together for one last push between now and the end of the season."

The sides last met at Central Park in early January and Cowden came out on top thanks to goals from Kenny Adamson and Paul McQuade while a 2nd half John Dempster goal ensured a share of the spoils at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium in February.

The Sons have won their last four games to come within one point of the top but the pressure is now on Dumbarton as the season reaches its climax. Lennon praised Jim Chapman's side for reducing the deficit but is concentrating on his own side:

"Dumbarton have done fantastically well to win four consecutive game and capitalise on points we have dropped. But we have nothing to fear and can go into the game full of confidence. We are the league leaders, unbeaten in our last five games and have a great home record."

Lennon has a number of injury worries going into the game. Marek Tomana is struggling and unlikely to feature while Kenny Adamson, Paul McQuade and Brian Fairbairn are all out. Danny Mackay will have a late fitness test along John Dempster trained this week.

It is a time for brave players and cool heads on the park. It's an occasion made for winners such as David Hay, Mark Baxter, Darren McGregor, John Armstrong, John Gemmell, John Dempster and Graeme Brown to name just a few. It's a massive game for your club and you can play your part. Get yourself down to Central Park and get behind the Blue Brazil!

A warm welcome to all Dumbarton fans making the trip through to Fife. The gates open at 1.30pm but the Club Bar will not be available for away fans due to Legends Day. Admission for the game is £10 for adults, £12 for parent and child and £5 for OAPs/Children.

Legends Day 2

It's Legends Day 2 tomorrow afternoon with a sell out crowd eagerly looking forward to catching up with five key members of the 1991/92 promotion winning side - the team that famously ended an agonising 20 year wait for promotion.

The original event was a huge success in January and 60 guests will once again enjoy a pre-match three-course meal in the Alex Menzies Lounge in the company of five Blue Brazil legends. The legends this time are:

Commercial Executive Stuart Juner reminisced about a very memorable promotion winning season:

"During the course of the 1991/92 season, Cowdenbeath had been involved in a four horse race for the title. Dumbarton, East Fife and Alloa Athletic were in with a chance to gain promotion in the last few weeks of the season. As fate would have it, Cowdenbeath would have to face Alloa on the last day of the season with Alloa needing to win the game to clinch promotion.

"John Brownlie's side had been on the receiving end of a 4-2 midweek defeat at the previous encounter at Recreation Park, missing a penalty in the process with the score at 3-2. Alloa had played the majority of the first half of their seasons' fixtures away from home due to development work at the ground and had put an impressive run of results together.

"With so much at stake a crowd of 5,050 turned out to see the match, delaying the kick-off by 15 minutes. In a nail-biting game, for both sets of supporters, with few clear cut chances Cowdenbeath survived with a 0-0 draw which saw them gain promotion for the first time in 20 years. It had been a long wait for this success and ensured hero status for manager John Brownlie and his side."

All guests should be at Central Park for 12.15pm for the entertainment - including the chance to win a signed home jersey as well as a signed ball.

Duff keeps Cowden top

The Blue Brazil stretched their unbeaten run to 5 games with a goal less draw away to Albion Rovers. However, a 3rd consecutive draw coupled with Dumbarton's impressive winning run has narrowed the lead at the top to just one point.

Cowden had a number of opportunities to win the game with Ramsay, Brown and Stein going close. John Gemmell has the best chance of the game but shot past the post.

At the other end, David Hay pulled off three fantastic saves to keep Rovers out.

Narrow youth cup defeat

The under 19s four game unbeaten run came to an end with a narrow defeat from Dundee at Blairwood Park in Oakley on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors took the lead after only four minutes when former Central Parker Grant Manzie fired a low shot into the right hand corner of the Cowden net from 14 yards.

Despite the early set back Cowden battled away looking to grab and equaliser. Wallace shot over from 20 yards and minutes later Ferguson did likewise with a free kick. Seven minutes from the break we had our best chance of the first half to open the scoring when a corner from King was headed off the bar by Forbes.

As the half came to a close the visitors had a good chance of doubling their advantage when Mine sent a ten yard shot across the face of the home goal and just past the post.

The visitors opened the second period briskly and Jackson pulled off an early double save when Gray fired in a long range shot the young keeper parried the ball and blocked the advancing Milnes follow up.

O'Brien the shot just wide of the target after latching onto a Moosavi throw in. The equaliser however was soon to come after 56 minutes when Derek Wallace slotted the ball home from close range following a cross from King.

Soon after we had claims for a penalty waved aside by referee Lorraine Clark when King was bundled in the box by a Dee defender.

The visitors then restored their lead on 69 minutes when Kevin Milne cut in on the left and slotted a low shot past Jackson from 12 yards.

As Cowden battled away for an equaliser, Young saw a header cleared off the line, following a King corner.

In a dramatic finale both teams added to the scoring in the closing minutes of the game. Dundee got their third goal of the afternoon after 88 minutes when a cross from Gray came off the inside of the post and fell to Kyle Benedictus who headed home from close range. Then as the game went into injury time John Ferguson fired home from close range from a Wallace cross.

Final score: Cowdenbeath under 19s 2, Dundee under 19s 3.

Cowden held at home

The Blue Brazil dropped two points in the championship race against bottom dogs Elgin City despite laying siege to the away goal for much of the game.

Cowden opened the game brightly and dominated from the first whistle. A number of chance were squandered in the opening 45 minutes but the game really burst into life after the interval.

Sub Graeme Brown was denied by the post after being put clean through on goal and came close with a back post header minutes later.

Kenny Adamson's effort was ruled out for offside while Jay Stein hit the bar and came close after a sublime piece of skill. A combination of bad luck and good goalkeeping continued to keep Cowden at bay.

It did not look like it was going to be the home sides day and it got worse with 20 minutes remaining after Joe Mbu was penalised in the box. Darren Shallicker dispatched the resultant spot kick.

John Gemmell finally equalised with a powerful close rang header 6 minutes from time but the Blue Brazil could not find an elusive winner. (4 April 2009)

Both goals were scored early in the first half with John Gemmell opening the scoring for the Blue Brazil after only 7 minutes. The lead only lasted 7 minutes with Ross Campbell scoring after 14 minutes to level the scores.

The 2nd half was scoreless as the game ended 1-1 on a satisfactory night for Cowden.

19s extend run

The youngsters extended their unbeaten run to four games with a narrow league win over Ross County at Central Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Chris King opened the scoring after 18 minutes when he fired a 25 yard free kick high into the top corner of the visiting net.

The Dingwall side grabbed an equaliser with 16 minutes to go when Mark Lamont beat the home offside trap to slot the ball home from 16 yards.

Cowden however restored their lead with nine minutes to go when Forbes sent over a cross for substitute Rory Emslie to head home from six yards. Three minutes later we added a third with Forbes being the provider again when he slotted the ball into the path of another sub Cyrus Mossavi who fired the ball home from 16 yards.

The late goal burst was not over however as with four minutes to go the visitors pulled a goal back when Ryan Scanlan hit a 25 yard shot high into the top corner.

Fofar v Cowden

Cowden return from a well-earned ten day break with a difficult assignment away to promotion hopefuls Forfar Athletic on Tuesday night.

The Blue Brazil go into the game on the back of an impressive home win over East Stirlingshire and Danny Lennon is looking for the same again.

"I watched Forfar on Saturday and it will be another tough game", said Lennon.

"But if I get the same level of performance and commitment as the last game I will be more than satisfied.

"We are all looking forward to getting back into action after a welcome break. The break has given us some respite after the challenging programme in the last month and has allowed a number of injuries to clear up.

"We kept training light over the last week and I am now looking for a final burst from the boys over the last seven games."

Captain Mark Baxter has recovered from injury and returns to the squad along with a fully-fit Jay Shields. John Dempster is nearing fitness but Tuesday will come to soon while Paul McQuade suffered a blow on his return from injury after picking up a calf strain at training on Saturday. (30 March 2009)

19s cup campaign off to a flyer

The under 19 side opened their Irn Bru League Cup campaign with a narrow win over Elgin City at Recreation Park in Rosyth on Sunday afternoon.

Playing with the strong wind at their backs in the opening 45 minutes Cowden always looked the more likely side to break the deadlock. The first real chance of the afternoon came on 18 minutes when a low 18 yard shot from King whisked just past the upright. We then had three good chances in a two minute spell midway through the half. Emslie had a shot saved by Anderson and a minute later he shot just wide of the target. Brett then shot over as Cowden took control of the game.

In a rare Elgin attack McKenzie then came close for the visitors when his free kick from 25 yards drifted just over the bar.

The deadlock was finally broken on the half hour when Chris King found himself through on goal he was brought down by the advancing Anderson who picked up a yellow card for his efforts. King then slotted home the resulting spot kick.

As the opening period drew to a close Emslie once again came close to adding to the scoring with a 20 yard effort, with Ferguson and Wallace (pictured) also coming close.

Elgin substitute Archibald shot over the bar nine minutes after the restart as the Moray side looked to get back into the game, while at the other end Emslie beat a defender but saw his angled shot just go wide of the target. Moosavi who had just been on the park for a minute then tested Anderson with a ten yard shot which the stopper did well to turn away for a corner.

As the game drew to a close King was wide of the target with a 25 yard free kick while Jackson thwarted Archibald.

Final score: Cowdenbeath 19s 1, Elgin City 19s 0.

TEAM: Murray Jackson, Kyle Miller, Ross Galbraith (Martyn Robinson 44), Steven Bennett, Peter Bradley, Derek Wallace, Dean Brett, Mark Forbes (Connor Kane 83), Rory Elmslie (Cyrus Moosavi 61), John Ferguson, Chris King.

ELGIN CITY: Iain Anderson, Duncan McPhee, Murray McConnachie, Steven McKenzie, Graeme Barber, Steven Fraser (Grant Duguid 64), Derek Ramsay (Connor McKenzie 69), Stuart Peat, David Wilson, Brian Cameron, Graeme Robinson (Liam Archibald 11).

Well earned three points

A disciplined Cowden performance earned a comfortable win over promotion rivals East Stirlingshire to open up a ten point lead at the summit of the Irn-Bru 3rd Division.

In an entertaining game at Central Park the Blue Brazil put on a masterclass in how to play for the jersey and the management team.

The opening half hour was a scrappy affair and the first clear cut opportunity fell to the Shire. A hopeful ball over the top put Brian Graham clean through on goal but the striker shot wildly over the bar.

The Blue Brazil slowly got a stranglehold on the game and unsurprisingly opened the scoring after 36 minutes when Brian Fairbairn headed home from point blank range after John Gemmell's effort had been saved by Mark Peat - Gemmell and Adamson congratulate 'Frankie' above.

Cowden completely controlled the play after the interval and deservedly tied the game up with 17 minutes remaining when John Armstrong powered home a header from a Fairbairn corner.

The Cowden support - who were praised by Annan's Chris Jardine on his BBC blog for their 'incredible' backing at Galabank last weekend - stayed till the end to give Danny Lennon and his team a well earned standing ovation. (21 March 2009)

Cowden v East Stirlingshire

It's another massive game at Central Park on Saturday afternoon when title contenders East Stirlingshire come calling.

Danny Lennon's young squad have done fantastically well to bounce back from relegation last term and mount a serious promotion challenge at the first time of asking.

Tuesday night's 2-1 win over Montrose moved the Blue Brazil seven points clear at the top but there is a long-way to go with fixtures against promotion rivals Dumbarton, East Stirling (twice) and Forfar Athletic (twice) still to come.

First up is this weekends clash with high-flying East Stirlingshire. Jim McInally's side avoided bottom spot on the last day of the 2007/08 season and have made great progress this season to challenge at the top. The turnaround has not been unexpected though given the resources that have been made available to attract higher league players such as Colin Cramb, Paul Hay, Eddie Forrest, Paul Weaver, Jamie Stevenson and Brian Graham to the club. The long-time whipping boys are now a formidable force and genuine contenders for the 3rd Division championship.

Cowden have a slight advantage over the Shire this season with a 0-0 home draw in October followed by an emphatic 4-1 victory at Ochilview in December - a result which ended Shire's long unbeaten run.

Brian Fairbairn - who scored a double the last time the club's met - made a welcome return from suspension of Tuesday night but Lennon has injury worries for the weekend with a number of players rated doubtful.

Both club's have spent significant time in their history's languishing at the bottom of the Scottish Football League so it's a great time to be a Blue Brazilian or a fan of the Shire. Get out in force and support your team! With eight games remaining, every match is going to be a cup final and not to be missed.

Kick off is 3.00pm with admission set at £10 for adults, £12 for parent and child, and £5 for concessions. The gates open at the usual time of 1.30pm with refreshments available in the Club Bar, situated within the main stand. (19 March 2009)

Blue Brazil back on track

Two early John Gemmell goals were enough to end Cowden's 4 match winless run and extend the lead at the top of the table to 7 points, as the Blue Brazil ran out 2-1 winners over Montrose in an entertaining game at Central Park.

The Blue Brazil attacked from kick-off and played some fantastic football in the opening half and should have been well clear by the interval.

Gemmell opened the scoring after only 4 minutes with a near post header from a Brian Fairbairn flag kick and doubled the advantage 14 minutes later with a carbon copy effort.

Cowden were on fire at this stage and it looked ominous for Montrose until they received a life line after 27 minutes. Darren McGregor gave away a needless foul on the edge of the box and Jamie McKenzie's free-kick took a wicked defection past Hay into the net.

Montrose re-grouped at half-time and took the game to their opponents but a nervy Cowden side showed their mettle and weathered a late onslaught. First, Gordon Pope's effort came back off the bar and then Hay pulled off a miraculous save in injury time to claim three vital points.

Cowden are now unbeaten in their last 7 home games and Central Park will host another massive game on Saturday with the visit of 3rd placed East Stirlingshire. (17 March 2009)

Cowden v Montrose

The Irn-Bru 3rd Division promotion race continues on Tuesday night with the visit of play-off hopefuls Montrose as the games come thick and fast.

Danny Lennon's team have played 5 games in the last fortnight in a hectic period which has witnessed the end of the 10 match unbeaten run.

Saturday's defeat at Annan was the 3rd consecutive loss on the road but Cowden are unbeaten at home since mid November and will be looking to kick-start the promotion bid tomorrow evening.

The Blue Brazil have had the upper hand against Montrose this season with home and away league victories and a 2-0 triumph in the CIS Cup. However, last weekends win over Dumbarton has re ignited Steven Tweed's sides promotion aspirations.

"Montrose had a fantastic win on Saturday and will fancy their chances", said Lennon.

"They will still have play-off ambitions and will be dangerous opponents. There are no easy games in this division but we remain positive and focused, and the target will once again be three points.

"I would like to thank the fans for remaining behind the team despite the difficult spell we have had in recent weeks. We are in a crucial stage of the season and it is vital that we all stick together."

Forward pair Paul McQuade (pictured above) and John Dempster are both rated doubtful for tomorrow night. Brian Fairbairn comes back into contention after serving his one-game suspension on Saturday.

Kick off is 7.45pm with admission set at £10 for adults, £12 for parent and child, and £5 for concessions.

Late goals from Annan inflicted defeat on Cowden at the weekend and the loss of an important point. Manager Danny Lennon felt the result was self inflicted:

"It was a very disappointing end result on Saturday. We had the bulk of the possession in the second half and created the better chances - although not any clear cut opportunities.

"As the game wore on a draw would have been an acceptable result but we let our guard down. The second goal was totally avoidable and came from giving away a needless free-kick and then not defending the subsequent delivery properly.

"On a positive note, none of the teams below us gained any ground. However, we will not rely on other teams and it is up to us to take care of our own performances and let the other teams worry about us." (16 March 2009)

Academy update

The under 19s recorded an impressive win on Sunday afternoon when they defeated Clyde 2-1 at Beath High School.

The Blue Brazil youngsters dominated the play and finally broke the deadlock 15 minutes from time through sub Cyrus Moosavi.

Clyde equalised 4 minutes later but Chris King deservedly won the game for Cowden with a fantastic free-kick 3 minutes from time.

TEAM: Murray Jackson, Kyle Miller, Ross Galbraith, Connor Kane, Peter Bradley, Craig Stevenson, Derek Wallace, Thomas O'Brien, Rory Emslie, Callum Young, Chris King. Subs: Cyrus Moosavi & Steve Bennett.

"I was really pleased with the performance and the final result", said Bob Paterson, Head of Youth Development and under 19s coach.

"We were well on top for most of the game and the win was merited. They done very well despite having a number of regulars missing.

"Most of the boys are still eligible for the 17s and we had young Craig Stevenson making his debut from the under 16s.

"The under 16s also put on a good display against Queen of the South with a team that featured a number of under 15s so the future is bright."

Late goals ensures 3rd consecutive away defeat

Two break way goals cost Cowden a valuable away point at Annan on a day that all our closest rivals lost - 2nd placed East Stirling's 4-0 defeat at home to Berwick means that Cowden still managed to extend the lead at the top on goal difference.

It was a difficult surface to play football on for both sides but Annan made light of the conditions to open the scoring after only 12 minutes. Steven Sloan cut inside and was given plenty time to curl a great shot into David Hay's bottom right corner.

Cowden responded well and quickly equalised 9 minutes later. Graeme Brown flicked a high cross onto Danny Mackay and the youngster coolly slotted home his first goal from 12 yards.

The Blue Brazil dominated possession after the interval without creating many clear cut chances and Annan took advantage in the closing minutes. Substitute Jamie Dunbar (87) met a free-kick from the right to beat Hay from close range and fellow sub Phil Storey wrapped up the points in injury time. (14 March 2009)

Annan v Cowden

The Blue Brazil are on the road south again on Saturday afternoon and will be looking to navigate their way through a tricky game against play-off hopefuls Annan Athletic.

The promotion battle is hotting up and it looks like league leaders Cowden are in a four-way race with East Stirling, Dumbarton and Stenhousemuir, but tomorrow's opponents are still outsiders for a play-off place and have impressed in their first season in the Scottish Football League.

The 0-0 draw at home to Forfar in midweek ended the short sequence of defeats and Danny Lennon is looking for his side to build on this and get back to the winning ways that saw his team go ten matches unbeaten.

"It was disappointing that we failed to take our chances again on Tuesday night", said Lennon.

"It was not a classic by any means but we were solid in the 1st half and created enough chances over the piece to win the game. However, we lost concentration a couple of times at the back and were fortunate not to get punished.

"We are not doing a lot wrong at the moment and if we keep creating chances the goals will come. Every team goes through a difficult spell but we have a squad of players with the right mentality and quality to go on a run again."

Brian Fairbairn will be missing after his red card on Tuesday night but Lennon will be able to welcome Marek Tomana and Jay Shields back into the fold after injury and suspension respectively.

10 men earn point

The Blue Brazil failed to capitalise on home advantage on Tuesday night but 10-man Cowden secured a hard earned point against in-form Forfar Althetic as the 0-0 scoreline ended the run of two consecutive defeats.

The game may have ended goal less but there were clear chances at both ends to break the stalemate.

The Blue Brazil had the better of the opening 45 minutes and Danny Mackay should have opened the scoring just before half-time but keeper Ally Brown pulled of a great reflex save.

Dick Campbell's side had more of the ball after the break and should have done better with two free headers in the box - Ross Campbell was particularly unlucky to see his effort come back off the inside of the post - while Mark Ramsay came close for Cowden.

The Blue Brazil finished the game strongly - despite being reduced to ten men following Brian Fairbairn's straight red card - and John Gemmell looked to have won the points in injury time but Brown denied him with a terrific stop. (10 March 2009)

Legends Day 2

Legends Day 2 on Saturday 18th April 2009 is another sell out and it promises to be a cracker with promotion rivals Dumbarton visiting Central Park for a top of the table clash.

Attendees at Legends Day 1 were given first refusal and places were quickly snapped up after the success of the original event in January.

60 guests will enjoy a three-course meal in the company of five Blue Brazil legends in the Alex Menzies lounge before taking in the Dumbarton game.

The legends this time around are all team mates from the promotion winning 1991/92 squad - the team that ended an agnoising 20 year wait for promotion. The legends are:

Commercial Executive Stuart Juner was delighted to be able to confirm the attendance of five legends from a very memorable promotion winning season:

"During the course of the 1991/92 season, Cowdenbeath had been involved in a four horse race for the title. Dumbarton, East Fife and Alloa Athletic were in with a chance to gain promotion in the last few weeks of the season. As fate would have it, Cowdenbeath would have to face Alloa on the last day of the season with Alloa needing to win the game to take the second promotion spot behind Dumbarton.

All bookings must be confirmed by email and a deposit of £10 paid before the 31st March, seats will not be held where deposits have not been received. All guests should be at Central Park for 12.15pm for the entertainment - including the chance to win a signed home jersey as well as a signed ball.

Email hospitality@cowdenbeathfc.com or phone 01383 610166 if you would like to join the waiting list for future legends day events. (9 March 2009)

Cowden v Forfar

Local man and former Cowden manager Dick Campbell brings his in-form Forfar Athletic side to Central Park on Tuesday night in a re-arranged Irn-Bru 3rd Division fixture.

Cowden go into the game on the back of a disappointing defeat against Berwick at the weekend - a result which rankles with Cowden boss Danny Lennon:

"We could not have done a great deal more on the day except put the ball in the back of the net. We created plenty of chances but the strikers need to take more responsibility. We have set high standards at this club and, with the quality of players that we have, I would expect to find the net at least once with the percentage of good chances we created.

"The pitch was not ideal and we resorted to too many high balls which is not our philosophy. We changed things and added more pace in the forward areas which caused them problems but the killer touch was lacking.

"On the plus side, along with creating chances, we defended well and were in control for almost the entire game. The boys refused to give up and fought to the end but it was just not our day. We are in it together and we win and lose as a team.

"The fans were terrific again and got behind the team from the first whistle to the last."

Cowden will be looking to end a sequence of two straight defeats on Tuesday night but will face a Forfar team that has won its last three games.

"We are still in pole position and the boys remain very positive", stated Lennon.

"The boys were bitterly disappointed on Saturday and had as bad a weekend as me I'm sure but we need to put the frustration of the Berwick game behind us and move on, starting with Tuesday.

"Forfar are on a decent run and Dick Campbell will have them well organised. They will be difficult to break down but we have enough quality in our ranks to go out and win the game. "

Cowden defeated Forfar 1-0 at Station Park earlier in the season but still have to face the Loons three times this season after a spate of postponements during the winter months.

Further spice is added to the game with former Cowden boss Dick Campbell in charge of a Forfar side which has ex-Blue Brazilians Craig Winter, Elliot Smith, Martyn Fotheringham and Stephen Manson in the ranks.

Paul McQuade and Mark Baxter came through the Berwick game after injury but Marek Tomana is still ruled out while Jay Shields completes his two-game suspension.

Meanwhile, Forfar have announced that admission prices have been reduced for their fixture with Cowden on Tuesday 31st March. Entry will be £5 for adults and £3 for concessions. (9 March 2009)

Lucky mascots

The Blue Brazil's important 1-0 win over Stenhousemuir at Central Park recently was attended by special guests from Sheffield with youngsters Robbie and Adam Stubbs mascots for the day (pictured with skipper Mark Baxter).

Robbie and Adam travelled up from Sheffield on the morning of the game. Father Chris was a proud man when they took the pitch and the players didn't let them down with the result. All 3 had an exceptional day at the club and the lads have a new hero in Marek Tomana, who impressed them when he came on as sub. (9 March 2009)

Cowden squander chances

The Blue Brazil squandered the opportunity to open up an eight point lead at the top of the table after going down 1-0 away to Berwick. Danny Lennon's team created enough openings to win many games but profligacy in front of goal - 20 shots on goal during the 90 minutes - cost vital points as Stenhousemuir slipped up at home against fellow promotion contenders East Stirlingshire.

Cowden bossed the opening 45 minutes without creating many clear cut chances and paid the price when Berwick opened the scoring with their first of only two efforts on target during the entire game. A miss hit Chris Anderson shot fell at the feet of Steven Bonar (51) and the player fired home without any pressure from the home defence.

Lennon made changes in an effort to save the game and it should have paid off with a host of guilt edged chances created. Top scorer Paul McQuade, who made a real impact with his pace and direct approach after making his comeback from injury from the bench, uncharacteristically missed three glaring opportunities while the Berwick defence cleared efforts from McQuade and Dempster off the line.

Berwick v Cowden

The Blue Brazil have the opportunity to get right back on track after Stenhousemuir ended the ten match unbeaten record in midweek when they travel south to face old rivals Berwick Rangers on Saturday afternoon - at the ground where the unbeaten run began back in November.

Cowden have a good record against the Shielfield side this season with three straight wins but all have been close encounters.

Berwick are currently languishing near the bottom of the division but their league position does not reflect their much improved form under Jimmy Crease.

"Saturday's game can't come soon enough for us", said Danny Lennon.

"The boys are desperate to get back out on the pitch and get straight back into the swing of things after losing on Tuesday night.

"Berwick gave us a difficult game down there in November and have been steadily improving as the season goes on. But we know what we need to do and are firmly focused on the task ahead.

"We have a punishing schedule over the coming month and I may make two or three changes to freshen the team up.

"The result on Tuesday night was obviously disappointing and we caused our own problems in the 1st half with some sloppy defending. The 2nd half was much better and I felt we had most of the possession and created some good chances with Broonie hitting the bar and a couple of penalty claims. A draw would have been a fair result but we did not put the ball in the net and paid the price.

"It was a terrific turnout from the fans on Tuesday night given the conditions and I would like to thank everyone for making the effort and getting right behind the team - I know how much the boys appreciate it. We face a difficult and challenging run of games and need everything from everyone - including the supporters.

"The backing down at Berwick last time really sticks in my mind. We were going through a difficult spell at the time but the support that day was absolutely exceptional and will stay with me for a long time. That togetherness, on and off the park, really drove us through that game, which laid the foundations for our unbeaten run."

Skipper Mark Baxter and top scorer Paul McQuade could come back into contention after making good progress from recent injuries.

Marek Tomana is a major doubt after being on the receiving end of a heavy tackle in midweek while Jay Shields misses out after going over the disciplinary threshold and starts a two-game suspension.

Narrow defeat ends run

A first half goal from Iain Diack was enough to earn Stenhousemuir a narrow victory and end Cowden's ten match unbeaten run as the double header between the top two ended in a dead heat.

Saturday's clash ended narrowly in favour of Cowden and it was another tight encounter on Tuesday night but with John Coughlin's team securing a 1-0 on this occasion.

Stenhousemuir opened brightly and deservedly took the lead after 32 minutes when Diack bundled the ball home from a yard out after Dalziel had flicked the ball on.

The Blue Brazil rallied after the break and only some desperate defending protected the Ochilview sides lead. Sub Graeme Brown (pictured) came closest to finding the equaliser but his effort came back off the bar.

The results over the two games mean that Stenhousemuir have failed to gain any ground with Cowden still five points clear with two games in hand. (3 March 2009)

Mark of a Cowden great

Saturday's win over Stenhousemuir marked captain Mark Baxter's 100th first team appearance for the club.

Signed by Mixu Paatelainen just ahead of the August transfer deadline back in August 2005 from his home town club St Johnstone, 'Beaky' went on to play a major role in Cowden's first championship win for 67 years that season.

Beaky's ability and leadership qualities saw him take over the skippers armband following the departure of Blue Brazil legend Innes Ritchie in 2006, at just 21 years-old

A regular in the side in his first two seasons at Central Park, last season was a frustrating one for the popular defender as he had to watch most of the campaign from the sidelines with a foot injury as the team drifted towards relegation. He battled back to fitness in the summer and has been a driving forces as the team have risen to the summit of the 3rd Division table this season.

Overall Beaky has made 93 starts for the Blue Brazil with a further 7 appearances for the bench. He has also scored on 2 occasions.

Beaky made his debut for St. Johnstone in the SPL as a 17 year-old and was capped for Scotland at under 19 level. During his time at McDiarmied Park he scored 4 times in 46 (+17) league and cup appearances.

Baxter's record of 100 appearances and a championship medal stands up with that of Cowden greats of the past. (2 March 2009)

Stenhousemuir v Cowden - Part 2

The Blue Brazil kick off their mega month of March with part two of the double header with John Coughlin's Stenhousemuir.

You may have just recovered from the excitement of Saturday's late goal drama but it all starts again at Ochilview on Tuesday night at 7.30pm when the top two come head to head for the second time in four days.

Cowden came out on top on Saturday and the victory leaves the Ochilview side trailing Cowden by eight points having played two additional games. The result puts Stenhousemuir under intense pressure but Danny Lennon and his team do not intend to take their eye off the ball.

"It was a great result at the weekend but the focus now moves to the next game", said Lennon.

"We will be looking to build on the good work from Saturday but I'm sure It will be a totally different game on Tuesday evening. Back to back fixtures can be difficult but our thoughts are now firmly placed on our approach to this game.

"It's a big pitch and a lovely surface and I am sure it will be a spectacle for the supporters."

Paul McQuade will miss out again on Tuesday but could come back into contention for next weekend. Skipper Mark Baxter is doubtful after picking up a knock on Saturday.

Cowden face a difficult seven game schedule in March with Tuesday's game followed by home games against Forfar Athletic, Montrose and East Stirling, along with trips to Berwick Rangers, Annan Athletic, and Forfar Athletic.

"The club has a lot of games coming up and we have reiterated to the boys the importance of looking after themselves in terms of eating the right things etc", explained Lennon.

"They have taken this on board all season and have shown a fantastic level of professionalism. It is a great dressing room and a pleasure to work with this squad of players." (2 March 2009)

Stenhousemuir: Post-match reaction

Saturday's clash witnessed a determined Cowden side deservedly edge out Stenhousemuir thanks to a goal from former Stenny favourite John Dempster four minutes from time, much to the delight of Blue Brazil boss Danny Lennon.

"It was a massive result for us and we are all delighted with the win", said Lennon.

"It was a tight game but I felt we had the better of the opportunities and merited the three points. We had a high percentage of balls into their box and fair play to Stenhousemuir for the way they defended. However, you are going to give yourself a good chance to score with that ratio of chances we created and we got our reward in the end.

"The game was by no means a classic but sometimes the quality of football suffers when there is so much at stake.

"The result sets us up for another difficult match on Tuesday and the boys are looking forward to another big game."(2 March 2009)
