Competition: Irn-Bru 2nd Division play-off final - 1st leg

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 775

Man of the Match: Jay Shields

The battle for a place in next seasons Second Division will go to the wire after a goal less 90 minutes at Central Park as Cowden closed their home programme on a 13 game unbeaten run with our fifth successive home draw.

There were two changes to the home starting line up which had draw with East Stirlingshire on Saturday to earn their final place with Paul McQuade and John Dempster coming into the side at the expense of youngsters Jon Robertson and John Ferguson.

There were chances for both sides to opening the scoring in the opening minutes of the game with a Stein clearance falling to Motion whose rasping 20 yard effort was saved by Hay with just two minutes on the clock.

Sixty second later at the other end of the park Gemmell found space 25 yards out to fire in a powerful low shot which bobbled in front of keeper Bennett who did well to turn the ball round the post for a corner.

With 18 minutes gone Diack set up former Central Parker Dalziel but the big striker failed to connect with the ball. In a game of few clear cut chances for both sides Dalziel once again found himself in a good position on the hour when he raced down the left by his shot was saved by Hay at the near post. Soon after, Armstrong did well to hook a cross from Diack over his own bar with Dalziel ready to pounce.

With seven minutes to go McLeod of the visitors, who had been booked early in the first half, was sent off for a second yellow card offence after a foul on Ramsay. From the resulting free kick by Linton Gemmell had a great opportunity to break the deadlock but his header from six yards out went wide of the Warriors goal.

Soon after Shields fired in a powerful 25 yard shot which whistled just over the visitor's crossbar.

With two minutes left on the clock both sides found themselves with ten men when McGregor picked up a straight red card after a foul on Thomson.

Gemmell and Malloy of the visitors were also booked.

COWDEN:

A header six minutes from time by Darren McGregor was enough to earn Cowden a draw and a place in the play off final as we stretched our unbeaten home run to 12 games.

Cowden made one change to the starting XI which had won the first leg in midweek at Ochilview with Jon Robertson coming into the side for the injured Danny Mackay, Shire meanwhile had David King sidelined although Derek Ure who had also been replaced in midweek was able to take a place on the bench. Dean Richardson and Eddie Forrest came in as replacements.

The game was only three minutes old when Shire opened the scoring to level the tie on aggregate. McGregor attempted to play a back pass to Hay which was short and picked up by the alert Brian Graham who rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into the empty net.

The goal gave the visitors the early emphasis and they went looking for a further goal to turn the tie in their favour. On the quarter hour Tully sent a ball to Graham who shot wide of the post, Forrest was then unmarked at the back post following a Stevenson corner but his header was well saved by Hay. Following another Stevenson corner Donaldson fired a 25 yard shot just past the post.

On 21 minutes Stevenson picked up a yellow card for a foul on McGregor in the centre circle. The decision infuriated visiting manager Jim McInally who was sent to the stand by refreee Tumilty.

Five minutes from the break Cowden had a great change to grab an equaliser when Ramsay found himself unmarked but his shot on goal was blocked by Forrest.

Early in the second half Richardson fired the ball across the face of the Cowden goal but Rodgers failed to make contact.

Gemmell then found himself through on goal but keeper Peat dived bravely to scoop the ball away. Armstrong then found himself in a good position after a cut-back from McGregor (pictured) but shot wide of the target with only Peat to beat.

With 11 minutes to go the visitors had a great chance to go further ahead when Rodgers sent over a cross to the unmarked Tully at the back post but he headed into the side netting.

Five minutes later Cowden grabbed a vital equaliser. Stein fired over a corner from the left which was headed towards goal by Darren McGregor. Keeper Peat attempted to scoop the ball away but far side assistant Richard Gough declared that the ball had crossed the line.

In the furious protests from the visitors after the goal both Bolochoweckyj and Anderson were red carded with team mates Graham and Forrest being booked. Manager McInally also returned to the touchline and was sent to the stand for a second time.

As the game drew to a close both Gemmell and Ramsay (pictured) had chances to finish off the nine men but the draw was enough in the end to take Cowden through.

Both Shields and Ramsay picked up bookings for Cowden.

COWDEN:

Mark Baxter - Outstanding at the back for Cowden. 8/10

Competition: Irn-Bru 2nd Division play off semi-final - 1st leg

Venue: Ochilview

Attendance: 605

Man of the Match: Darren McGregor

Two goals in the opening 30 minutes gave Cowden a narrow advantage in the battle to reach the play off final.

After shadow squads were utilised in last Saturday's meeting of the sides it was back to more familiar starting line ups although two goal hero John Ferguson (pictured) retained his place in the visiting line up. There was a boost for the travelling fans when Paul McQuade was also declared fit enough to take a place on the bench after spending the last two months on the side lines through injury.

Shire had a few early chances to open the scoring with Rodgers firing a volley wide of the post and Donaldson firing in a weak 20 yarder which was easily saved by Hay.

It was Cowden however who broke the deadlock after 12 minutes when an initial shot from Mackay was cleared by the home defence into the path of John Gemmell who fired a low shot past Peat from 20 yards.

Shire almost hit back soon after but Donaldson sent his 25 yard shot over the bar and soon after Ure saw a similar effort fly over.

On the half hour we doubled our advantage when Ramsay fired a cross from the right into the Shire box which fell to Jay Stein (pictured)who fired home a powerful angled shot.

Seven minutes later Ramsay played a similar ball but Mackay shot just over the bar. As the opening period drew to a close Gemmell almost added a third goal but his shot just cleared the bar.

Shire boss Jim McInally rang the changes at the interval and introduced Forrest and Richardson to replace King and Ure.

Seven minutes into the second period Cowden were handed a blow when Mackay had to be stretchered off after an aerial tussle with Bolochoweckyj.

The home side came more into the game in the second period and pulled a goal back after 62 minutes when Andy Rodgers evaded the Cowden defence and controlled Paul Hay's cross with his chest before slotting the ball past Hay from eight yards.

Two minutes later the Shires top scorer thought that he had bagged an equaliser but the assistant referee had his flag up as he converted Hay's cross.

Ferguson then came close twice on two occasions with long range efforts which were just too high and drifted over the bar.

With 13 minutes to go Rodgers had another good chance to equalise but after getting on the end of a Weaver cross he shot wide of the target. As the game drew to a close Rodgers was once again set up by Graham but he fired his effort high over.

The home sides Bolcoweckyj picked up the only booking of the night.

East Stirlingshire 0, Cowdenbeath 2

Date: Saturday 9th May 2009

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Ochilview

Attendance: 434

Man of the Match: John Ferguson

The regular league campaign closed with a welcome away win at rain lashed Ochilview as we leapfrogged our hosts to claim the runner up spot.

With the two play off games looming and nothing at stake but pride both managers took the opportunity to rest key players and try out some of their youngsters. Danny Lennon made six changes to the starting line up from the Forfar game with Jamie Reid, Mark Ramsay, Jon Robertson, Graeme Brown, Marek Tomana and John Ferguson coming into the side. Meanwhile his Shire counterpart Jim McInally fielded only three players who had taken part in the previous weeks win at Coatbridge.

In a low key game the first real chance came after 11 minutes when Tomana slotted the ball to Ferguson but his angled shot was pushed round the post by Peat.

The hosts then had a couple of corners in quick succession with the later falling to former Central Parker O'Neil whose half volley went well over the bar. Just short of the half hour O'Neil slotted the ball to Anderson who was clean through on goal but Hay was quick to react and kept the score blank.

Ten minutes from the break Brown had a great opportunity to break the deadlock when he breezed through the home defence beating three players but his final shot was blocked by Peat.

Five minutes later Thornton at the other end had a good chance for the Shire when Anderson put in a cross but the Australian saw his diving header go just wide of the target.

Shire came close to breaking the deadlock midway through the second period when a shot from the right from Anderson crashed off the bar and fell to Thornton yards out but fortunately he headed the rebound over with the goal gaping.

The deadlock was finally broken after 78 minutes when John Ferguson out paced the home defence and rounded the advancing Newman, who had replaced the injured Peat at the interval, to slot home his first senior goal.

The youngster then rounded off a memorable day when he flicked home his second goal with the last touch of the ball. Kelly, Forrest and Dunn of the home side were booked by referee Robertson.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Strolled through the game before heading off to the Supporters Club annual dance to pick up another handful of awards. 7/10

Jamie Reid - Teenage full back made his first appearance in a Cowden shirt since making his debut against Airdrie last season. Has spent this term on loan with Scone Juniors and impressed against the Shire. Fantastic late tackle to stop certain goal. 8/10

Scott Linton - Promising youngster got another game under his belt and will be looking to push on next season and claim a regular place. 6/10

Joe Mbu - Used his strength and awareness to great effect. Had Shire attack in his back pocket. 8/10

John Armstrong - Another player who showed his class without breaking sweat. 8/10

Jay Shields - Harried away in the middle of the park before being replaced by Forbes. 6/10

Mark Ramsay - One of the more experienced players in the side at just 23. Took the responsibility in his stride with an accomplished performance. 7/10

Jon Robertson - Another youngster with the ability to make a real impact next season. Has been unlucky with illness this year but standout in midfield on Saturday. 8/10

Graeme Brown - Got some much needed match practice ahead of the play-offs before making way with 30 minutes remaining. 6/10

Marek Tomana - Only recently returned from injury so will have welcomed the game time before the showdown with the Shire. 6/10

John Ferguson - 17-year old marksman has been a regular scorer at youth level for the Blue Brazil and was rewarded with his first start on Saturday. Showed great composure to net a brace and was a threat all afternoon. Took the opportunity with both hands and has put himself in contention for the big games coming up. 9/10

Man of the Match: Jay Stein

Cowden's championship dream finally came to an end with our fifth draw in six games. There were two changes to the starting line which had lost at Montrose with Jay Shields and John Dempster replacing Mark Ramsay and Jon Robertson.

Dick Campbell's side needed a win to keep their play off hopes alive and were quick off the blocks and raced into a two goal lead after just four minutes. Firstly former Central Parker Kevin Gordon fired home from six yards after three minutes and seconds later Johnny Russell made it two with a 12 yard shot.

Jay Stein however came to the rescue to get us back into the game against his former club. On the half hour he sent a clever angled shot over keeper Brown from ten yards (pictured above) and then five minutes from the break fired a powerful 20 yarder home for the equaliser.

The Loons had the better of the second period however and had the ball in the Cowden net only to be denied for offside. At the other end Cowden came close through both Linton and Dempster and had a late claim for a penalty waived aside after the ball had appeared to have come off a Loons defender.

Three players picked up yellow cards Shields and former Central Parker Winter after a first half clash and Gibson of the visitors in the second half.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Helpless as Forfar were gifted a 2 goal start. 7/10

Mark Baxter - Fought his corner and willed his team mates on. 7/10

Joe Mbu - Sacrificed for Tomana after only 23 minutes as Cowden chased the game. 4/10

Darren McGregor - Outstanding as usual. One man who certainly deserved a championship medal. 8/10

John Armstrong - Steady and reliable. 7/10

Danny Mackay - Worked hard for his team. 7/10

Jay Stein - Best game for Cowden. Two moments of inspiration gave Cowden hope. 9/10

Jay Shields - Returned after suspension but never got to grips with the midfield. 5/10

John Gemmell - Gave 100% but little sight of goal. 6/10

John Dempster - Only recently back from injury but not at his best. Missed a golden opportunity after rounding the keeper. 5/10

Scott Linton - Difficult task up against Russell but held his own. 6/10

Sub (23 mins): Marek Tomana - Called into action as Cowden tried in vein to save their title aspirations. 7/10

Sub (75 mins): Mark Ramsay - Replaced Shields with 15 minutes remaining and added some urgency to the midfield. 5/10

Montrose 2, Cowdenbeath 1

Date: Saturday 25th April 2009

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Links Park

Attendance: 403

Man of the Match: John Gemmell

Cowden's 14 week run as league leaders came to an end after a second half comeback saw the Gable Endies record their first win over us since September 2004.

There were two changes to the side which had drawn with Dumbarton. Jay Shields was suspended following his red card while Derek Fleming was sidelined due to injury. Darren McGregor made a welcome return to the starting XI along with youngster Scott Linton.

After two goal less games it took us only eight minutes to break the deadlock at Links Park when John Gemmell volleyed home a Robertson cross from close range.

Soon after Hay pulled off a good save from a Black volley and also denied Pope and Bradley to keep us in front at the interval.

The home side opened the second period brightly and a minute in Bradley saw a curling shot come off the post. Soon after Cowden came close to adding a second goal but McGregor's header was cleared off the line by Hegarty.

Montrose grabbed an equaliser on 65 minutes when a corner from Black was headed home by player/manager Steven Tweed. At the other end Cowden came close to restoring their lead but Mackay's headed was tipped to safety by Bullock.

The Gable Endies then grabbed their winner from the penalty spot after 72 minutes when Linton brought down Bradley and Chris Hegarty sent Hay the wrong way to give his side an outside chance of reaching the play offs.

Tweed of the home side picked up the only yellow card of the afternoon.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Coped well with Montrose threat but no chance with goals. 7/10

Mark Baxter - Up against tricky opponent but held firm. 7/10

Scott Linton - Had an excellent game at left-back but showed inexperience to give away spot kick. 7/10

Joe Mbu - Had an effort cleared off the line but got on the wrong side of Tweed for the qualiser. 7/10

John Armstrong - unfamiliar role but gave 100% as ususal. 7/10

Mark Ramsay - Worked hard but never really got to grips with the game. 6/10

Danny Mackay - Industrious as ever but part of Cowden side that failed to get to grips in midfield. 6/10

Jon Robertson - Made his second consecutive start and didn't let anyone down. Assist for goal. 7/10

Cowdenbeath 0, Dumbarton 0

Date: Saturday 18th April 2009

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 1,181

Man of the Match: Danny Mackay

The Third Division's biggest crowd of the season saw the top two fight out a goal less draw as Cowden officially secured a play off spot.

It was a makeshift Central Park XI which stretched their unbeaten run to six games with a fourth successive draw. There were three changes to the starting line up which had drawn a black at Coatbridge the previous week. Darren McGregor, Brian Fairbairn and Graeme Brown were all sidelined with Danny Mackay, Jay Shields and Jon Robertson coming back into the side.

The visitors, who had chalked up four successive wins to move within a point of Cowden, had the better of the opening period with Keegan and Lennon coming close while Shields had Cowden's best chance of breaking the deadlock.

Dumbarton had the best chance of opening the scoring after 13 minutes when Mbu brought down Stevie Murray on the edge of the box but after dusting himself down his poorly struck spot kick was easily saved by Hay.

The second period opened with a 22 yard effort from Canning being saved by Hay at the second attempt and soon after Lennon shot wide of the target from 18 yards. At the other end in a game void of clear cut chances Stein fired in a 25 yard shot which produced a good save from McEwan.

With 18 minutes to go Cowden were reduced to ten men when Shields was sent off after picking up a second yellow card. Five minutes later manager Danny Lennon came off the bench, at the ripe age of 40, to replace Stein and had a chance of grabbing the winner with a long range free kick which was gathered by McEwan.

As the game came to a close Gemmell almost grabbed a winner with a header against his old side but both sides had to settle for a point.

Dempster and Armstrong picked up yellow cards along with Lennon and Gordon of the Sons.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Hero once again with penalty save to keep Cowden top of the league. 8/10

Mark Baxter - The skipper led from the front and showed the desire required to win this league. 8/10

Derek Fleming - Was a doubt before the game and only lasted 34 minutes. Replaced by Scott Linton. 4/10

Danny Mackay - Passed a late fitness test and put in a fantastic shift in the middle of the park. 9/10

John Armstrong - Stood up strong against aerial bombardment from Dumbarton. 8/10

Joe Mbu - Moment of madness gave away penalty but recovered to put in a good display. 7/10

Mark Ramsay - Hard worker and pace troubled Dumbarton at times. 6/10

Jay Shields - Put in some shift but was controversially sent off after 72 minutes after picking up 2nd yellow. 6/10

John Gemmell - Held the ball up well and linked with the midfield against one of his former club's and almost claimed the winner in the closing minutes. 7/10

Jon Robertson - Came in for only his 2nd start of the season. Intelligent use of the ball and great composure under pressure. 8/10

Jay Stein - Not many opportunities to shine but battled away for the cause. 6/10

Sub (34 mins): Scott Linton - Early introduction after injury to Fleming. Has only just recovered from a knee injury but kept Murray quiet and offered threat going forward. 8/10

Sub (68 mins): John Dempster - Replaced Robertson and made immediate impact as Lennon showed his intention to win this game. 5/10

Sub (77 mins): Danny Lennon - Manager showed true leadership to come off the bench for his first appearance of the season and help his side hold on. Tried to emulate Fabio Aurelio's effort against Chelsea in midweek with late free-kick but might require more work in training! 5/10

Subs not used: Callum Young & Murray Jackson.

DUMBARTON: David McEwan, Gordon Lennon, Pat Boyle, Michael Dunlop, Ben Gordon, Mark Canning, Ryan McStay, Ross Forbes (Kieran Brannan 67), Denis McLaughlin, Paul Keegan (Iain Chisholm 62), Stevie Murray. Subs not used – Graham Barbour, Martin McNiff & Mark McGeown.

Albion Rovers 0, Cowdenbeath 0

Date: Saturday 11th April 2009

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Cliftonhill

Attendance: 452

Man of the Match: David Hay

Cowden extended their unbeaten run to five games with their third successive draw at a sunny but windy Cliftonhill.

There were two changes from the previous week's game with Elgin. Kenny Adamson was sidelined with a dislocated shoulder with Marek Tomana also forced to watch the game from the stand after picking up a knock against the Moray side. Both Brian Fairbairn and Graeme Brown returned to the starting line up.

After a quite opening Rovers had the first attempt on goal after 13 minutes when a low shot from McGowan was easily saved by Hay. At the other end Gemmell, playing against his old side, had a tame header gathered by Ewings.

Cowden then had a good chance to break the deadlock on 21 minutes when Brown shot wide of the post from eight yards.

Five minutes later Stein fired in an angled volley which was brilliantly turned round the post by Ewings. Two minutes later the keeper was at his best once more when he blocked a close range shot from Ramsay with his legs.

As the first half came to a close Hay kept Cowden level pulling off three good saves from Harty, Adam and Donnelly.

The Rovers opened the second period strongly and Barr sent a curling drive inches wide of the post with Harty coming close soon after.

Cowden however almost broke the deadlock on the hour when Gemmell ran clear but sent his shot wide of the post from 20 yards.

Gemmell picked up the only booking of the afternoon.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Three top class saves to keep a clean sheet. Best keeper in the division. 9/10

Mark Baxter - Got up and down the park to good effect. 7/10

Derek Fleming - Veteran kept it simple in the middle of the park. 7/10

Darren McGregor - No nonsense display from McGregor. 7/10

John Armstrong - Dominant at the back. 8/10

Joe Mbu - Recovered well after a shaky start to the game. 7/10

Brian Fairbairn - Injured in the 1st half and replaced at the interval by Robertson. 4/10

Mark Ramsay - Came close to opening the scoring. 6/10

John Gemmell - Great chance to win the game but missed the target. 6/10

Graeme Brown - Should have done better with 1st half chance at the back post. Replaced early in the 2nd half. 5/10

Jay Stein - Struggled to get a foothold in the game although denied by the keeper. 5/10

Sub (45 mins): Jon Robertson - On at the break and made good use of possession. 6/10

Sub (57 mins): Jon Ferguson - Youngster came on just before the hour mark and was lively up front. 6/10

Subs not used – Danny Mackay, Jay Shields & Murray Jackson.

Cowdenbeath 1, Elgin City 1

Date: Saturday 4th April 2009

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 331

Man of the Match: John Gemmell

Cowden stretched their unbeaten home run to nine games thanks to a late goal from John Gemmell.

There were three changes to the starting line up which drew with Forfar in midweek. Danny Mackay failed a fitness test while both Jay Shields and Brian Fairbairn dropped to the bench. Mark Baxter returned to the line up along with Marek Tomana and Derek Fleming.

In a goalless first half Gemmell and Tomana came close to breaking the deadlock while Gillespie and Shallicker of Elgin tried their luck with a couple of long range efforts.

The second half was almost one way traffic on the visiting goal with Cowden hitting the woodwork twice. Firstly Brown, who had replaced the injured Tomana at the interval, found himself one on one with Ridgers but saw his shot come off the post. Then Stein clipped the bar with a chipped shot.

In a rare Elgin attack the deadlock was finally broken after 70 minutes in controversial fashion. Mbu appeared to make a well timed tackle as Shallicker headed towards the Cowden goal but referee Madden awarded a spot kick which the striker duly converted.

Cowden continued to pound the away goal and justice was finally done with six minutes to go when John Gemmell headed home from a Fairbairn cross to salvage a point.

City's Edwards picked up the only yellow card of the afternoon.

Cowden had to settle for a point against fellow promotion hopefuls Forfar at Station Park on Tuesday night. There was one change to the starting line up with Jay Shields taking over from Marek Tomana.

The home side had a couple of opportunities early in the game through Russell and Campbell but it was Cowden who opened the scoring after just seven minutes. A shot from Ramsay took a deflection off Tod and fell into the path of John Gemmell who blasted the ball past Brown.

The lead proved to be short lived however as the home side grabbed an equaliser seven minutes later when Ross Campbell unleashed an unstoppable shot past Hay from 25 yards.

A couple of minutes later Hay pulled off a good save to deny Russell who tried his luck from long range.

In the second half clear cut chances were few and far between. Russell once again tried his luck from distance but failed to trouble Hay while at the other end Stein sent a low drive just past the post.

Forfar's Brady picked up the only booking of the night.

COWDEN:

Man of the Match: John Gemmell

A goal in each half saw Cowden move ten points clear at the top of the table as we stretched our unbeaten home run to eight games.

There was one change to the starting XI which had beaten Montrose in the midweek with Jay Stein coming into the side after captain Mark Baxter was sidelined by injury. The visitors arrived at Central Park with four players out of the side due to suspensions.

Cowden had the first real chance of the afternoon after nine minutes when midweek goal hero Gemmell tried his luck with an overhead kick which was saved by Peat and soon after he saw a half volley whistle past the post.

Shire had a great opportunity to open the scoring on the 20 minute mark when a diagonal ball by Kelly was met by top scorer Graham by his lob over Hay was too high and drifted over the bar. Soon after Ramsay tried his luck from 18 yards by was denied by the keeper.

The opening goal eventually came after 36 minutes when a free kick from the left by Stein found Gemmell whose header from six yards was tipped onto the bar by Peat. The ball bounced back into play and Brian Fairbairn was on hand to head the ball into the empty net from five yards.

Four minutes after the interval Fairbairn fired in a 20 yard shot which was saved by the keeper.

On the hour mark Cowden once again came close to getting a second goal when an Adamson cross from the left was flicked on by Brown into the path of Gemmell who fired a shot across the face of the goal and just wide of the target.

The second goal eventually came with 17 minutes left on the clock. Fairbairn whipped in a corner kick from the left and the unmarked John Armstrong fired home a powerful header from six yards.

As the clock ran down both sides had chances to add to the scoring. Firstly a long clearance from Mbu saw Brown clear but the advancing Peat narrowed the angle and the substitute shot wide of the target.

The Shire then had only their second shot on the Cowden goal when Weaver saw a 25 yard shot go wide of the target.

Dunn of the visitors picked up the only yellow card of the afternoon just before the break.

Two early headers from John Gemmell saw us return to winning ways and move seven points clear at the top of the table.

Danny Lennon made three changes to the starting line up which had lost at Annan with Mark Baxter, Marek Tomana and Brian Fairbairn coming back into the side. Graeme Brown dropped down to the bench while Jay Shields and Paul McQuade were ruled out by injury.

It took Gemmell only four minutes to open the scoring when he neatly flicked the ball past Bullock from close range following a Fairbairn corner.

Gemmell came close again minutes later with another header while Baxter tried his luck from 22 yards. In reply for the visitors Hunter turned the ball over the Cowden bar.

With 18 minutes gone Cowden doubled their advantage when he powered home another header from a Fairbairn corner.

The visitors however pulled a goal back after 27 minutes when one time Cowden loanee Jamie McKenzie fired home a 25 yard free kick which took a deflection off the Cowden defensive wall to wrong foot Hay.

Tomana twice came close to restoring our two goal advantage firstly with a 30 yarder then a curling shot from 18 yards.

The second period opened with Bullock saving a 22 yard free kick from Fairbairn while Hay done well to do till a Hegarty 25 yarder over the bar.

As the game drew to a close the visitors had a couple of opportunities to grab a draw with Pope seeing a header rebound off the post while Hunter was put through on goal from a flick from Bullock, who had come up field for a corner, but his shot was blocked by Hay.

Hegarty and Pope of the visitors were booked in the second half.

COWDEN:

David Hay – Wrong footed for the Montrose goal due to deflection but proved his class with a wonder save in injury time. 8/10

Danny Mackay – Immense and a strong candidate for young player of the year. Seemed to be fading a few weeks ago but has been outstanding in recent games. 9/10

John Gemmell – Six games without a goal but made up for it with a deadly double to take his tally for the season into double figures. 8/10

Marek Tomana – Back in from the start but not as influential as can be. However, one or two moments of magic and his presence on the park created space for others. 7/10

Two goals in the closing minutes saw Cowden go down to a third successive away defeat at a windy Galabank. There were three changes to the starting XI which had been held by Forfar in midweek. Jay Shields returned after his suspension along with Graeme Brown and John Gemmell. Mark Baxter dropped to the bench while the suspended Brian Fairbairn watched the game from the sidelines along with the injured John Dempster.

The home side opened the scoring after 11 minutes when Ryan Adamson and Steve Sloan combined down the right and Sloan cut inside to shoot home from the edge of the box.

On 18 minutes Gemmell had a free kick saved by keeper Summersgill while at the other end Hay denied Bell.

Cowden got back on level terms after 21 minutes when Danny Mackay scored his first senior goal. A Gemmell free kick was cushioned by Brown for the youngster to pick his spot from eight yards out.

Seven minutes from the interval we almost took the lead when McQuade saw a header come off the bar.

As the game seemed to be heading towards a draw Annan restored their lead with just three minutes to go. Adamson conceded a needless free kick which was fired into the box by Hoolicken to substitute Jamie Dunbar who sent a downward header past Hay into the corner with his first touch of the ball.

As the game went into injury time the home side added a third when Jack dispossessed McGregor and slotted the ball to another replacement Phil Storey who fired the ball past the advancing Hay.

Gemmell and Ramsay both picked up yellow cards along with the home sides Neilson.

Despite playing out the last 24 minutes with 10 men following a red card for Brian Fairbairn, Cowden stretched their unbeaten home run to six games against inform Forfar.

Fairbairn had been one of two changes to the starting line up which had gone down to Berwick, replacing John Gemmell, with Paul McQuade also coming back into the side to take over from Graeme Brown. The Loons had two former Central Parkers in their line up – Kevin Gordon and Martyn Fotheringham while Craig Winter was on the bench for Dick Campbell's side.

The visitors opened the game brightly and in three minutes Gibson got free to send over a cross but there were no takers. Minutes later Russell did likewise but once again there was no one there to take advantage. Soon after Campbell flicked the ball onto Russell but the on loan Dundee United youngster sliced his shot over the bar.

We mounted our first real attack on the visiting goal after 12 minutes when Dempster and McQuade combined to set up Mackay but his cross was intercepted by Tod. Ramsay then latched onto a long kick out by Hay but his shot from the edge of the box drifted wide of the post, and then in another attack he shot just over the bar after being set up by Dempster.

On the half hour Tod headed towards the Cowden goal from a Fotheringham corner but the ball was safely gathered by Hay.

As the opening period drew to a close Baxter fired in a shot from 12 yards was blocked by Brown and minutes later the keeper denied Mackay, blocking his shot with his foot after Ramsay had set up the youngster.

Early in the second period both sides came close to breaking the stalemate. Ramsay came close for Cowden while Campbell shot just past the post with an angled shot before Hay saved a Fotheringham header. Ramsay then curled the ball inches wide of the target after working his way into the Loons box.

Just after the hour the Loons almost took the lead when Campbell saw his header come off the inside of the post and bounce to safety.

With 66 minutes gone Cowden were reduced to ten men when Fairbairn was given a straight red card after a foul on Tulloch at the halfway line.

Campbell then came close for the visitors with a 20 yard shot from Russell carrying over the bar as the Loons looked to snatch all three points.

As the game drew to a close Cowden almost grabbed an injury time winner when Gemmell burst through the Forfar defence but Brown brought off a good save.

The visitors Dearden and Ramsay both picked up yellow cards early in the second half.

Man of the Match: Darren McGregor

Despite having 20 attempts on the Berwick goal Cowden left Shielfield Park pointless after Steven Bonar scored for the hosts with their only shot on target early in the second half.

There were four changes to the side which had narrowly lost at Stenhousemuir in midweek. Jay Shields commenced a two game suspension while Marek Tomana hadn't recovered from his injury. Derek Fleming and Brian Fairbairn meanwhile dropped down to the bench. Mark Baxter returned to the starting line up along with Kenny Adamson, Graeme Brown and John Gemmell.

The borderers, playing with the strong wind at the backs posed the first threat of the afternoon when Callaghan tested Hay with an inswinging corner which was safely gathered by the keeper.

Soon after Brown hooked over from close range then keeper Barclay saved a netbound header from Dempster. Mackay then missed an open goal before Armstrong headed just over from point blank range following a corner. Dempster was then once again denied by Barclay.

Six minutes into the second half the Borderers scored through Bonar with their first shot on the Cowden goal. A miss hit shot from Anderson fell into the midfielder's path and he shot in off the post. Minutes later Dillon rescued the home side when he headed a Dempster effort off the line with the keeper beaten.

McQuade replaced Gemmell midway through the second half as we looked to breakthrough a stubborn home defence and he was quickly into the action and on another day may have bagged a hat trick.

As the game went into injury time former Cowden youth player Ewart once again came to the rescue for the home side when he cleared an effort from McQuade off the line.

The home sides Callaghan picked up the only booking of the afternoon.

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Ochilview

Attendance: 423

Man of the Match: Mark Ramsay

All good things come to an end eventually and Cowden's ten game unbeaten run was ended at a rain lashed Ochilview with a header from Iain Diack separating the sides.

Both managers made three changes to their starting lines ups from the weekend meeting of the sides. Danny Mackay, Marek Tomana and Mark Ramsay came into the Cowden starting XI replacing the injured Mark Baxter, while Graeme Brown and John Gemmell dropped down to the bench. John Couglin meanwhile recalled John Ovenstone, Kevin Motion and Andy Brand to his side to take over from Jordan Smith, Paul Tyrell and Iain Thomson.

The Warriors almost broke the deadlock after four minutes when a shot from Motion was tipped over the bar by Hay. Six minutes later the home side had another good chance to break the deadlock when Dalziel released the ball to Diack who shot high over the bar.

At the other end Dempster made room down the left flank and crossed to Fairbairn who sent the ball over the bar.

The only goal of the night came after 32 minutes when Dalziel headed a McLeod effort goalwards and Iain Diack touched the ball home.

Cowden pressed for an equaliser in the second half and came closest to getting back on level terms on 67 minutes when substitute Brown hit the bar. Soon after Gemmell had a goal bound effort stopped on the line by Motion with claims for handball waved aside by referee McLean.

Armstrong, Gemmell, Shields and Fleming picked up yellow cards along with the home sides Lyle and Motion.

A goal four minutes from time gave Cowden a narrow win which saw them move eight points clear of the Warriors at the top of the table.

There were two changes to the starting line up which had drawn at Dumbarton. Joe Mbu came for youngster Danny Mackay who dropped to the bench, while Graeme Brown took over up front from the injured Paul McQuade.

The first half was one of few chances as both sides cancelled each other out and the first real opening came in 26 minutes when Fleming delivered a great ball into the box but Armstrong's header flashed wide of the Stenny goal. Minutes later Brown had the best chance of the opening period when his angled shot slipped through both the hands and legs of keeper Bennett but bounced off the post and the custodian was able to retrieve the ball (pictured).

The visitors posed little threat on the home goal with only a header from Molloy, which as easily held by Hay, to show for their efforts.

They however opened the second half more brightly and Dempster denied McLeod when he cleared a shot off the line.

Nine minutes into the second period Tomana replaced the tiring Brown and the little Slovakian light up the game with several good runs through the visitors defence as Cowden looked to break the deadlock.

Motion, who had replaced Morgan, almost grabbed an opener for the Warriors with 12 minutes to go with an angled over head kick which went just wide of the target.

Dempster however settled the game in Cowden's favour in a dramatic closing spell. Fleming sent over a free kick from the right which was headed on by Gemmell into the path of the big striker who bundled the ball past Bennett from close range (pictured above).

In a last throw of the dice Stenny introduced younger Love into the action and he almost grabbed an equaliser with the last kick of the ball but his shot was tipped over the bar by Hay.

Molloy of the visitors picked up the only booking of the afternoon for a foul on Tomana.

Date: Saturday 21st February 2009

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Strathclyde Homes Stadium

Attendance: 846

Man of the Match: David Hay

A second half equaliser from John Dempster saw Cowden maintain their unbeaten run and with Stenhousemuir's home defeat from Berwick move five points clear of the Warriors.

There were two changes to the starting line up which had beaten Annan three weeks previously with Brian Fairbairn and Paul McQuade replacing Mark Ramsay and Graeme Brown who dropped to the bench. The Sons fielded former Cowden loanee Denis McLaughlin after signing from Hearts on loan.

Cowden dominated the opening half hour of the game, which saw chances for either side few and far between, but were shocked after 33 minutes when the Sons opened the scoring with their first clear attack on the Cowden goal. A 25 yard shot from Murray was parried by Hay and the ball broke to Pat Boyle and the former Everton youngster shot home from a tight angle.

Hay was back at his best soon after when he pulled off a great one handed save from McLeod while his counterpart at the other end McGeown turned a 30 yard shot from Baxter behind for a corner.

Soon after the break Hay once again denied the Sons when he touched a fierce drive from Forbes over the bar. Soon after McLaughlin found himself in a good position but made a hash of an attempted chip.

Our equaliser came 12 minutes into the second period when a surging run from Gemmell ended with a block tackle and the ball fell to John Dempster who fired into the corner.

Man of the match Hay then pulled off a further two good saves to earn our point. Firstly he blocked a close range effort from McLaughlin then produced a marvellous one handed save to stop a bullet header from Gordon.

Shields was booked in the second half for a foul on McStay and was followed into the referee's book by the Sons duo of Canning, Forbes and Lennon.

COWDEN:

David Hay – Will not be happy with his part in the Dumbarton goal but more than made up for it with a master class late on. 9/10

Mark Baxter – Excellent. Back to his best and there are not many players in the lower leagues who will get the better of Beaky. 8/10

Derek Fleming – Solid display and one outstanding delivery in the 2nd half was begging to be put in the net. 6/10

Darren McGregor – Has had an outstanding season on his return to Central Park. 9/10

John Armstrong – Giant at the back. Superb display. 8/10

Danny Mackay – Industrious and flying into tackles early on but harsh booking seemed to affect his game. 6/10

Brian Fairbairn – Tireless display but did not get much joy on the offensive. 6/10

Jay Shields – Important player in the middle of the park. Battled for every ball. 8/10

John Dempster – Much of the game passed him by but took the one opportunity that came his way in style to score a priceless goal. 100% as ever. 7/10

Paul McQuade – Restored to the staring XI after injury but struggled to stamp his authority on the game. Limped off in the 2nd half. 6/10

John Gemmell – Up against one of his former clubs and played a crucial role in the equalising goal. 7/10

Sub (63 Mins): Joe Mbu – Welcome sight as Mbu came on to play his first competitive game since in almost 5 months. Slotted back into central defence as if he had never been away. 6/10

Sub (68 Mins): Marek Tomana – Replaced McQuade and immediately lightened up the game. 6/10

Subs not used – Graeme Brown, Mark Ramsay & Murray Jackson.

Cowdenbeath 1, Annan Athletic 0

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 326

Man of the Match: Jay Shields

A first half goal from John Gemmell saw Cowden consolidate their five point lead at the top of the table as we stretched our unbeaten run to eight games.

There was one change to the side which had beaten Albion Rovers seven days previously with Mark Ramsay replacing Brian Fairbairn. The visitors had former Northern Ireland under 19 international Liam Cusack in their line up as a trialist following his release from Dumbarton the previous day.

The first clear cut chance of the game came midway through the first half when Dempster latched onto a cross from six yards but his header was saved by Summersgill.

Annan then had a few long range efforts from Gilfillan which were wide of the target before Cowden eventually broke the deadlock after 39 minutes. Brown was fouled by Neilson 20 yards out and John Gemmell fired a low free kick though the Annan defensive wall past the stranded keeper.

Cowden opened the second period strongly and both Brown and Mackay were off target with shots before Dempster was unlucky not to add a second goal when a powerful 20 yard shot crashed off the post.

Sub McQuade then brought out a good save from Summersgill while at the other end McGregor blocked a shot from Anson. The visitors then came close to an equaliser with their best chance of the game when Hoolicken fired in a 30 yard free kick which Hay tipped over the bar.

Cowden however finished the game stronger with Armstrong coming close with a header and Ramsay firing just wide with a 12 yard shot.

Fleming was booked along with the visitors Gilfillan, Neilson and Townsley.

COWDEN:

David Hay – Was only seriously tested once during the entire match but pulled off a fantastic save from late free-kick – sign of a top keeper. 7/10

Mark Baxter – Strong in defence and showed great pace getting up and down the flank. 8/10

Derek Fleming – Troubled Annan defence with his set plays. 7/10

Darren McGregor – Rock solid. 8/10

John Armstrong - Ditto. Outstanding alongside McGregor. 8/10

Danny Mackay – Tenacious display in the middle of the park and intelligent in possession. 8/10

Mark Ramsay – Great run late on and unlucky to see effort drift just wide. Threat throughout. 8/10

Jay Shields – Was up against former Central Parker Bryan Gilfillan and came out on top in duel. Snapped into every tackle. 9/10

John Dempster – Worked hard as ever and unlucky not to score with shot that came back of the post. 7/10

Graeme Brown – Won the free-kick which led to the goal but otherwise not Broonie's day. Will have benefited from game time as working his way back to full match fitness. 6/10

John Gemmell – Made it three goals from two games with a thunderous free-kick. 8/10

Sub (): Paul McQuade – Top scorer made a welcome return from injury and came close to adding a second goal. 6/10

Sub (): Marek Tomana – On for the last seven minutes and showed great vision to set up Ramsay with defence splitting pass. 6/10

Subs not used – Joe Mbu, Jay Stein & Murray Jackson.

ANNAN ATHLETIC: Craig Summersgill, Peter Watson, Lee Hoolickin, Derek Townsley, Kevin Neilson, Mike Jack (Ryan Adamson 65), Steven Sloan, Scott Anson, Liam Cusack (John MacBeth 55), Jamie Dunbar (Phil Storey 81), Bryan Gilfillan. Subs not used – Alan Inglis & Dougie Calder.

Cowdenbeath 2, Albion Rovers 1

Date: Saturday 24th January 2008

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 409

Man of the Match: John Gemmell

Two first half goals from comeback man John Gemmell saw Cowden move five points clear at the top of the Third Division.

There were two enforced changes to the side which had draw at Elgin the previous week with both Kenny Adamson and Paul McQuade failing pre match fitness tests to be replaced by Derek Fleming and Gemmell.

John Gemmell broke the deadlock after 21 minutes when a poor clearance from the Rovers defence fell to Fairbairn who passed the ball to Gemmell who in turn provided the opening for the big striker who sent a powerful low drive past Ewings from 17 yards.

Seven minutes from the break Gemmell took his goal tally against his former side to four for the season when he cracked home another low strike past Ewings from 18 yards.

Rovers pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after 41 minutes when McGregor was judged to have fouled Walker in the box and Ian Harty sent Hay the wrong way with his spot kick.

The second period saw Cowden on top but we were unable to add to their goal tally with their best efforts coming from a Mackay header which went just past the post and a free kick from Fleming which was well saved by Ewings.

As the clock wound down the Rovers almost grabbed an equaliser with just three minutes to go when a shot from substitute Crozier was blocked on the line by Armstrong.

McGregor was booked at the penalty incident with the visitors Benton and Donnelly also picking up yellow cards in the second half.

COWDEN:

David Hay – Another assured display from the ‘Cat'. Brilliantly claimed a cross late on to take the pressure off. 7/10

Mark Baxter – Up against highly rated Bobby Barr but only one winner in this contest. Kept Barr quite all game. 8/10

Derek Fleming – Recalled to the starting line-up after Kenny Adamson failed a late fitness test. Usual composed performance from the veteran defender. 7/10

Darren McGregor – Picked out by Cowden legend Davie Cairns as the standout player. Having a tremendous season so far.9/10

John Armstrong - 9/10

Danny Mackay – Worked hard in the midfield and almost scored in the 2nd half with a header. 7/10

John Gemmell – Returned to the first eleven in style with a well taken double. First start since November so understandably tired towards the end and left the field to a fitting standing ovation. 9/10

Jay Shields – Has been in excellent form for Cowden since coming back into the side in December but sloppy at times on Saturday. 6/10

John Dempster - Tireless display up top. Combined well with Brown at times. 7/10

Graeme Brown – Second start for Broonie and was a constant threat until tiring late on. Will get even better with more games under his belt. 7/10

Brian Fairbairn – Assist for the opener and fantastic work rate throughout. 7/10

Sub (64 mins): Marek Tomana - Replaced Brown and tormented Rovers on the break. 6/10

Sub (83 mins): Mark Ramsay - Late replacement for goal hero Gemmel. 5/10

Sub (89 mins): Jay Stein - On for the last few minutes. 4/10

Subs not used Joe Mbu & Murray Jackson.

ALBION ROVERS: Jamie Ewings, Alan Reid, Michael McGowan, Ciaran Donnelly, Alan Benton, Robert Walker, Steven McKeown, Marco Andreoni (Brendan Crozier 73), Ian Harty (Chris Hughes 89), Bobby Barr, Sean Fleming (Marc Pollock 56). Subs not used – Danny Ferry & David Scott.

Elgin City 1, Cowdenbeath 1

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Borough Briggs

Attendance: 380

Man of the Match: Darren McGregor

Our run of five successive wins came to an end as the home side broke their run of seven straight league defeats.

There was one change to the Cowden line up from the midweek win over Berwick with Graeme Brown replacing Brian Fairbairn.

Cowden dominated the game from the start and after just three minutes a Ramsay corner saw Brown shoot just wide of the post. Home keeper McNulty denied Brown on 13 minutes when he blocked his shot with his legs.

Six minutes later we were dealt a blow when top scorer McQuade limped off with a thigh injury to be replaced by Fairbairn.

As the opening period drew to a close Cowden were still looking to find a way through a stubborn home defence when McNulty tipped an explosive shot from Ramsay over the bar.

The second period opened with Cowden still on the attack and after both Dempster and Brown had spurned good chances the deadlock was finally broken on the hour mark. Dempster sent over a low cross which Graeme Brown slotted past McNulty for his 60th Cowden goal.

As we looked for a killer second goal we were handed a sucker punch with 15 minutes to go when Kenny Wright raced onto a Crooks pass to roll the ball into the Cowden net with their only serious shot on goal during the 90 minutes.

There was late drama however when Dempster was brought down in the box by Niven and a penalty was awarded by referee Murray. The big striker recovered from the challenge to take the spot kick but however sent his kick high over the bar.

Elgin's McKenzie picked up the only booking of the afternoon.

COWDEN:

Davie Hay - Had little to do through out the 90 minutes apart from having to pick the ball out of the net after City's goal with their only shot of the game. 8/10

Mark Baxter - Another solid performace from the skipper as he draws closer to his 100th game for the club. 8/10

Kenny Adamson - Had to be replace by Fleming ten minutes after the break after picking up a groin injury. 8/10

Darren McGregor - Man of the match with another fine performance in the heart of the defence. 9/10

John Armstrong - Works well with McGregor in the centre of the defence letting very little through them. 8/10

Danny Mackay - Still only 17 but dosn't look out of place in the Third Division. Replaced by Tomana for the closing ten minutes. 8/10

Mark Ramsay - Came close to breaking the deadlock just before the break but was denyed by keeper McNulty. 8/10

Jay Shields - Little terror who adds some steel to the midfield. Put in another hard working shift. 8/10

John Dempster - Had a great chance to score his second goal in four days but saw his last minute spot kick drift over the bar. 8/10

Paul McQuade - Had to go off after only 19 minutes due to injury, probably much to the relief of the Elgin defence. 7/10

Graeme Brown - Made his first start since signing after a few outings from the bench and opened the scoring on the hour mark. 8/10

Sub (19 mins): Brian Fairbairn - Dropped to the bench he came into the action to replace the injured McQuade. 8/10

Sub (55 mins): Derek Fleming - Came on for Adamson early in the second half. 7/10

Sub (80 mins): Marek Tomana - Came on for the last ten minutes but was unable to add to his midweek goal. 6/10

Subs not used – Joe Mbu & Murray Jackson.

Man of the Match: Darren McGregor

Cowden made it five wins in a row to take over as league leaders for the first time since the end of August thanks to goals in either half from John Dempster and Marek Tomana.

Once again Danny Lennon fielded the same starting line up while the Borderers had to do without the services of Ian Little who was suspended after being sent off against Montrose, however Jamie Ewart was eligible for the Borderers despite being sent off in a weekend City Cup win over Selkirk.

The opening phase of the game saw the visitors threaten first as they looked to keep up their unbeaten run and a Callaghan shot was easily gathered by Hay.

At the other end an effort from Dempster was blocked by visiting keeper McGurk. The ever dangerous Gribben then forced a good save from Hay.

It was Cowden however who took the lead on the half hour in controversial fashion when John Dempster gathered a through ball from McQuade and fired the ball high into the roof of the net from what appeared to be an offside position. Stand side assistant Craig Young however kept his flag down and Berwick skipper Callaghan was booked for protesting with the official. T

he second 45 minutes saw a pretty scrappy affair with Hay denying both Ewart and Callaghan as the visitors looked to get back on level terms.

With five minutes to go Berwick were reduced to ten men when Callaghan picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Brown.

As the game drifted into injury time Cowden clinched a second goal when Brown sent over a cross from the right wing into the path of fellow substitute Marek Tomana who sent a header past McGurk for his first league goal for the club.

Mackay and former Central Parker Gribben were also booked by referee Northcroft.

COWDEN:

Davie Hay - Was well protected by his back four but his precense clearly spreads confidence throughout the side. 7/10

Mark Baxter - Didn't give his opponents an inch on the right hand side. Getting better and better with games under his belt. 8/10

Kenny Adamson - Defended well and his overlapping runs are becoming his trademark. 8/10

Darren McGregor - Outstanding again. Only beaten once all night but displayed great recovery to reclaim the ball. 9/10

John Armstrong - Vital player for Cowden at the back. 8/10

Danny Mackay - Maturing quickly into a fine first team player. Becoming more vocal on the field. 7/10

Mark Ramsay - Benefiting from getting a run of games under his belt. More and more like the player of last season. 7/10

Jay Shields - Won a lot of possession for Cowden but passing was slack at times. 7/10

John Dempster - the scoring with a clinical finish and gave the Berwick defence problems all night. 8/10

Paul McQuade - Not able to add to his impressive tally but always a goal threat. 7/10

Brian Fairbairn - Worked his socks off for the cause and always willing to show for the ball but not on the top of his game. 6/10

Sub (70 mins): Graeme Brown - Showed some top quality touches and wonderful skill to set up Tomana for the 2nd goal. 7/10

Sub (78 mins): Derek Fleming - Came on for Mackay as Cowden looked to regain control in the midfield. 6/10

Sub (87 mins): Marek Tomana - Started and finished the move of the game to seal the points. 6/10

Subs not used – Joe Mbu & Murray Jackson.

BERWICK RANGERS: Ryan McGurk, Graham Guy, John Dillon, Jamie Ewart, Robbie Horn, Stuart Callaghan, Chris McMenamin, Gary Greenhill (Steven Bonar 70), Darren Gribben, Fraser McLaren, David Greenhill (Chris Anderson 86). Subs not used – Fraser Forrest, Peter McMahon & Marc Lunn.

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 416

Man of the Match: Kenny Adamson

Goals in each half from Kenny Adamson and top scorer Paul McQuade saw Cowden chalk up a fourth successive win to move within two points of league leaders Stenhousemuir at a blustery and rain swept Central Park.

After their comprehensive win over East Stirlingshire three weeks previously it came as no surprise that Danny Lennon listed the same starting line up. There was however a place on the bench for ‘new boy' Graeme Brown who returned to Central Park for a second stint ahead of the game. Also on the bench for the first time was young goalkeeper Murray Jackson after Scott Gallacher returned to Rangers at the end of his loan spell.

Playing into the driving wind and rain it took Adamson only 13 minutes to score for the second time in as many games when he was set up by Shields and ran 25 yards before unleashing a fierce shot past McEwan from the edge of the box into the right hand corner.

Dumbarton's reply was a shot from Canning which drifted well over the crossbar. Eight minutes from the break the Sons were reduced to ten men when Michael Dunlop, who had previously been booked, received a straight red card after bringing down the goal bound McQuade down on the edge of the box.

As the opening period drew to a close they had their best chance of the game when a Murray free kick fell to McAnespie who shot past the post from ten yards.

The visitors replaced keegan with Carcary nine minutes into the second half but chances were few and far between for both sides with the fierce wind seeing an advertising hoarding blowing onto the pitch.

With 25 minutes to go Brown came on for his second debut, replacing Ramsay, and he was instrumental in setting up McQuade's match winner with ten minutes to go. The division's top scorer picked up a Brown pass, chested the ball down, and advanced towards the visiting goal before firing a low shot from the edge of the box past McEwan who was rooted to his goal line.

With four minutes to go Canning picked up the Sons second yellow card of the afternoon from referee Salmond.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Spectator for most of the match but his composure and distribution was vital. 7/10

Mark Baxter - 'Beaky' was back to his best with a performance of real quality. Displayed leadership and a real will to win. 8/10

Kenny Adamson - Has regained his confidence this season and looking a top drawer full-back. Fantastic goal opened the scoring. 9/10

Darren McGregor - One of the most consistent performers at Central Park and put another couple of attackers in his pocket for the afternoon. 8/10

John Armstrong - Extended his loan deal until the end of the season earlier this month and celebrated with another fantastic showing. 8/10

Danny Mackay - 17-year old won every tackle in the middle of the park and kept possession well. 8/10

Mark Ramsay - Starting to regain the form of last season and the ball played in for McQuade, which led to Dunlop's red card, was a joy to watch. 8/10

Jay Shields - Buzzed about the midfield area like his life depended on it and continually won the ball back for Cowden. Kept his distribution simple. 8/10

John Dempster - Led the line very well and linked up expertly with the midfield. 8/10

Paul McQuade - Top scorer was having a quiet game by his standards but popped up with the goal that sealed the game. Now the Division's leading scorer. 8/10

Brian Fairbairn - A match winner on his day but not able to make much impact on this game. 6/10

Sub (65 mins): Graeme Brown - 'Broonie' made his return with 25 minutes remaining to a great reception. Made an immediate impact on his debut second time around with an assist for McQuade's goal. 7/10

Subs not used – Derek Fleming, Joe Mbu, John Gemmell & Murray Jackson.

DUMBARTON: David McEwan, Mark Canning, Pat Boyle, Michael Dunlop, Ben Gordon, Ross Clark, Kieran McAnespie (Gordon Lennon 78), Andy Geggan, Paul McLeod, Paul Keegan (Derek Carcary 56), Stevie Murray. Subs not used – David Gray, Richard McKillen & Mark McGeown.

Venue: Ochilview

Attendance: 457

Man of the Match: Brian Fairbairn

Cowden ran up their third successive win on the road to end the hosts eleven game unbeaten run and move to within a point of league leaders Stenhousemuir.

There were three changes to the starting line up which had secured the narrow 1-0 win at Montrose seven days previously with Kenny Adamson, Brian Fairbairn and Jay Shields replacing Scott Linton, Marek Tomana and Jay Stein. The Shire had Guinean keeper Kemoko Camara, who has been capped 48 times for his country, in goal in place of Jamie Barclay who had been recalled by Falkirk after his loan spell had come to an end.

It took Cowden just nine minutes to open the scoring when a run from Adamson saw a pass to Shields out on the right wing and his cross was missed by the keeper, while under pressure from Dempster, and fell to Brian Fairbairn who had the easy task of rolling the ball into the empty net.

The home side, who had won their previous five games at their adopted home, drew level on 18 minutes when Donaldson whipped over a free kick from the left and a glancing header from Brian Graham squeezed past Hay.

Seven minutes from the break the Shire spurned a good chance to take the lead when a shot from Cramb was headed off the line from Baxter.

Cowden restored their lead 12 minutes into the second period when Kenny Adamson tried his luck from 40 yards and his shot from the left wing flew over Camara and into the net via the upright.

With to 15 minutes go Paul McQuade bagged his 12th goal of the campaign when he took full advantage of a defensive lapse by the homesters. Subsitute McKenzie passed the ball back to Tully, who dummied the ball expecting it to go back to the keeper but the ever alert McQuade nipped in between them to slot the ball home.

With three minutes to go Fairbairn completed the scoring for the afternoon when he fired home from 20 yards.

There was a booking for each side with Armstrong and Forrest both picking up yellow cards.

COWDEN:

David Hay- Looked at fault for Shire's equaliser but soon redeemed himself mopping up everything else the home side threw at him. 7/10

Mark Baxter - Headed a Cramb effort off the line just before the break when the scores were level. 8/10

Kenny Adamson - Has waited over a year to score his first senior goal and it was worth waiting for! 8/10

Darren McGregor - Another solid performance in the heart of the defence. Could well turn out to be the find of the season. 8/10

John Armstrong - Has formed a good partnership with McGregor and gave little away. 8/10

Danny Mackay - The 17 year old made his third successive start for the side but was replaced for the last half hour by the expierienced Fleming. 7/10

Brian Fairbairn - Celebrated his return to the starting line up with a brace, the second could well be a contender for 'Goal of the Season'. 9/10

Jay Shields - Battled away in the middle of the park. 8/10

John Dempster - Helped to create our opening goal when he put the keeper under pressure. Replaced for the closing ten minutes by Dempster. 7/10

Mark Ramsay - Usual 100% effort from the little midfielder. 8/10

Sub (60 mins): Derek Fleming - Came on for the last half hour to add a bit of expierience to the midfield when the scores were tied. 7/10

Sub (80 mins): John Gemmell - Replaced Dempster upfront for the closing stages. 5/10

Subs not used Marek Tomana, Joe Mbu & Scott Gallacher.

EAST STIRLINGSHIRE: Kemoko Camara, Paul Hay, Dean Richardson (Sean Anderson 80), Eddie Forrest, Michael Bolochoweckyj, Craig Tully, Brian Graham, David Dunn (Marc McKenzie 72), Colin Cramb, Craig Donaldson (Gary Kelly 65), Andy Rodgers. Subs not used – Balsa Krivokapic & Jamie Newman.

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Links Park

Attendance: 334

Man of the Match: Darren McGregor

After an enforced three week break we returned to league action with a second successive away win and our third victory of the campaign over the Gable Endies to consolidate our second place spot. There were three changes to the side which had won at Berwick in the last league outing – keeper Scott Gallacher dropped to the bench while both Kenny Adamson and John Gemmell were sidelined due to injuries. David Hay returned to the side for his first start since late September along with Marek Tomana and Jay Stein who were promoted from the bench.

Chances were few and far between in the opening period as both sides tried to break the deadlock in what were dreadful conditions. The home side looked quite lively early on and Hunter twice tested Hay who pulled off a couple of good saves.

As the opening period progressed Cowden came more into the game and broke the deadlock seven minutes from the interval when Ramsay sent over a cross from the right into the path of John Dempster who slid the ball home from close range.

The second period saw few clear cut chances from either side as the rain became stronger with an off the ball incident being the major event of the half. With 13 minutes left on the clock, Gable Endies striker Roddy Hunter swung a kick at Hay and was promptly sent off by referee Scott MacDonald.

As the game drew to a close the Gable Endies put keeper Kelly up for a corner kick as they tried in vein to salvage a point. This then left the custodian struggling to get back to his goal and Hay launched a kick up field which never had enough power to carry it far enough against the wind. Both Dempster and a home defender went for the ball and saw the later shoot over the bar.

As well as the red card referee MacDonald handed out four yellow cards to Heggarty and McLaughlan of the home side and Cowden's McGregor and Shields.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Back in the number one spot for the first time since late September. Couple of outstanding stops to ensure a clean sheet. Commanding performance. 8/10

Mark Baxter - Played his part in good defensive display and got forward when he could. 7/10

Scott Linton - Caught in possession a couple of times but promising youngster came onto a good game. 6/10

Darren McGregor - Rock solid. Outstanding once again. 9/10

John Armstrong - Fantastic display alongside McGregor at the back. 8/10

Danny Mackay - Tenacious display from 17-year old in the middle of the park. 8/10

Mark Ramsay - Menacing in the 1st half but replaced at half-time due to tactical change. 6/10

Marek Tomana - Unstoppable at times with Montrose players chasing shadows. 8/10

John Dempster - Back to full fitness now and showing the what a good player he is. Great front post run and finish for the winner. 8/10

Paul McQuade - Pulled the strings in the middle of the park alongside Tomana. 7/10

Jay Stein - Played a vital part in the goal but the game mainly passed him by. 5/10

Sub (45 mins): Jay Shields - On for Ramsay at the break in a tactical change. 5/10

Sub (74 mins): Brian Fairbairn - Late change for Tomana. 5/10

Sub (85 mins): Jon Robertson - On for the last five minutes. 5/10

After the previous weeks defeat at the hands of league leaders Stenhousemuir there were four changes to the starting line up at a blustery Shielfield Park. Jay Shields was serving a suspension after his red card with Sandy Hodge and Derek Fleming sidelined with injuries. Marek Tomana meanwhile dropped to the bench. Mark Baxter made a return to the starting XI along with John Gemmell and youngsters Danny Mackay and Scott Linton.

The Borderers, looking for their first win since late September, had three former Central Parkers in their line up Graham Guy, Robbie Horn and Darren Gribben.

It was Gribben who opened the scoring after 11 minutes when he intercepted a pass back from McGregor and rounded Gallacher to roll the ball into an empty net.

The home sides lead was short lived however when John Armstrong continued his fine recent goal scoring run heading home a cross from Dempster eight minutes later. Soon after Gemmell came close with a 25 yard shot which shaved the post as Cowden took control of the game.

Early in the second period Gemmell went on a run half the length of the pitch unchallenged by the home defence but keeper McGurk did well to block his shot with his feet.

At the other end McLaren was inches away with a snap shot before Gribben restored their lead against the run of play on the hour mark with a volley on the turn from the edge of the box which flew into the top corner.

Four minutes later Cowden got themselves back on level terms when Gemmell cut the ball back to John Dempster to shoot home from close range.

Our winner then came with 15 minutes left on the clock when Paul McQuade netted his 10th goal of the season with a low shot from the edge of the box to send us back into third place.

Former Central Parker Horn picked up the only booking of the afternoon.

COWDEN:

Scott Gallacher – Made his Scotland under 21 debut during the week but will not be happy with his part in Berwick's opener. 6/10

Kenny Adamson – Solid in the middle of the park and made some fine overlapping runs from full-back late on. 7/10

Darren McGregor – Settled down to a good game after hesitancy played part in first goal. 7/10

Cowdenbeath 1, Stenhousemuir 2

Date: Saturday 15th November 2008

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 406

Man of the Match: Darren McGregor

The second biggest league crowd of the season rolled into Central Park for a game which failed to live up to its Third Division game of the day billing.

After the previous weeks win against Elgin it was not surprisingly an unchanged Cowden starting XI which took the field with the only change to the 16 man squad seeing Brian Fairbairn on the bench in place of youngster Scott Linton. The visitors meanwhile had to do without the services of top scorer Kevin Motion after his red card the previous week.

The Warriors, playing towards the High Street end, took full advantage of the strong wind behind them to lay siege on the Cowden goal and found themselves two up after just 26 minutes. Three minutes later we were handed a further blow when Hodge was carried off to be replaced by Baxter.

We had a few good chances however before the visitors opened the scoring with Dempster shooting wide of target from the edge of the box then McQuade had an effort gathered by Bennett after being set up by Adamson.

For the visitors Ferguson had a shot cleared off the line by Dempster and after a flurry of corners eventually broke the dead lock after 15 minutes when a long throw in by Ovenstone was met by Gary Thom who sent a header past Gallacher.

Eleven minutes later the league leaders went further ahead with another headed goal with Scott Dalziel nodding home a Thomson corner from close range on his return to Central Park.

As the opening period drew to a close Cowden had a few chances to reduce the deficit with a 20 yard free kick from Fleming being held by Bennett and then McQuade burst through the visiting defence only to shoot wide of the target.

The second half opened with Dempster laying the ball off to McQuade whose low shot pulled a good save out of Bennett and on the hour mark Shields was just inches wide with a 35 yard free kick.

Three minutes later however Shields involvement in the proceeding came to an end when he picked up his second yellow card of the afternoon from referee Madden.

With sixteen minutes left on the clock Tomana was replaced by Gemmell as Cowden went for broke and with just nine minutes to go appeared to have reduced the deficit when had the ball in the visitors net but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Two minutes later we did however get ourselves back in contention when McQuade shot into the net.

Seconds later the visitors were also reduced to ten men when defender Willie Lyle was red carded after appearing to lash out at a Gemmell in the goal celebrations and on his way to the stand also had a kick a pole on the unfortunate stock car safety fence!

As the game drew to a close Cowden went all out to grab an equaliser with Gemmell's long throw in's causing the Warriors defence all sorts of problems with the best chance falling to McQuade who was once again denied by Bennett. In injury time a visiting defender also appeared to handle a Gemmell shot but the resulting penalty claims were waived aside by referee Madden.

In a busy afternoon for the match official Baxter, Fleming, McQuade and Gemmell also picked up bookings along with Ferguson of the visitors.

COWDEN:

Scott Gallacher - Left exposed for both goals as no one took responsibility in the penalty box. 6/10

Jay Shields - Dismissed after 63 mins after picking up two yellow cards for dissent. 4/10

Kenny Adamson - Started off at full-back before moving into midfield following Hodge's injury. 6/10

Darren McGregor - Moved into central defence after 29 minutes and had the previously dangerous Dalziel in his back pocket. Led by example throughout. 9/10

John Armstrong - Solid showing from the big centre half. 7/10

Sandy Hodge - Lasted less than half an hour after being carried off on a stretcher. 4/10

Marek Tomana - Passed a late fitness test but was isolated out on the right and did not get on the ball enough. 6/10

Derek Fleming - Came close with a free-kick but not able to get forward enough. 6/10

John Dempster - Was not really into the game until showing a strikers instinct to help McQuade's shot into the net. 6/10

Paul McQuade - Cowden's most dangerous attacking outlet and unlucky not to add to his impressive scoring tally. 8/10

Mark Ramsay - Worked hard to support the attack. 7/10

Sub (29 mins): Mark Baxter - On for Hodge as Lennon reshuffled the defence. 6/10

Sub (74 mins): John Gemmell - on for the last 16 minutes and looked dangerous. 5/10

Subs not used – Jay Stein, Brian Fairbairn & David Hay.

STENHOUSEMUIR: Scott Bennett, Willie Lyle, Chris McGroarty, Gary Thom, John Ovenstone, Iain Thomson, Andy Shirra, Steven Ferguson, Scott Dalziel (Steven Hampshire 80), Andy Brand, Robert Love (Craig McEwan 85). Subs not used – Colin Hamilton, Richard Miller & Kieron Renton.

Cowdenbeath 4, Elgin City 1

Date: Saturday 8th November 2008

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 193

Man of the Match: John Armstrong

Cowden got their championship aspirations back on track as they gained revenge over Elgin for their Scottish Cup exit. After two back to back defeats there were three changes to the starting line up with Jay Shields, Kenny Adamson and Mark Ramsay recalled to the side at the expense of Dene Droudge, Brian Fairbairn and John Gemmell.

It was a blistering start to the game with three goals in the opening ten minutes which saw Cowden comeback to lead 2-1. The visitors, who were looking for their first ever league win at Central Park, opened the scoring with seven minutes gone when a Kerr throw in fell to top scorer Darren Shallicker who held off Adamson to fire the ball past Gallacher from ten yards.

Cowden responded quickly however and were back on level terms within a minute when Tomana cut the ball back for Paul McQuade to blast the ball home from close range. We then took the lead after ten minutes when a long free kick by McGregor was missed by the Elgin defence and John Armstrong fired home a first time shot from 12 yards.

The visitors searched for an equalised and passed up a good opportunity when Campbell crossed to Wright who shot into the side netting from a few yards out.

At the other end Ramsay set up Dempster but the ball was blocked by the advancing McNulty to deny the front man.

On the half hour we extended our lead further when Tomana slotted the ball to Dempster who was fouled on the edge of the 18 yard box by McNulty. From the resulting free kick taken by Shields McNulty pulled off a good save but the ball rebounded to McQuade who slotted home his ninth goal of the season from six yards.

Two minutes from the break it looked like we had added a fourth goal when McGregor headed home from a Fleming delivery but was penalised by referee Watters for a foul.

A minute after the break Shields had a 22 yard drive saved by McNulty as Cowden looked to add to their goal tally while at the other end Kaczan played the ball to Wright who shot wide.

As the visitors tried to get back into the game a shot from Kaczan was held by Gallacher at the second attempt. Tomana then saw a shot from the edge of the box drift just over the bar while McQuade saw himself through on goal but squared the ball to Dempster whose shot was blocked by McNulty.

With sixteen minutes to go Armstrong got his second goal of the afternoon to wrap up the points when he headed home a long cross from Fleming from eight yards.

Elgin then almost grabbed a late consolation when a free kick from Campbell crashed off the crossbar.

COWDEN:

Scott Gallacher - Young keeper was left exposed for the opener. Great save in the second half to stop a long range rocket. 7/10

Jay Shields - Made a surprise return to the starting eleven but more than justified his selection with a super show. 8/10

Kenny Adamson - Asked to play in an unfamiliar role but was not fazed at all. Excellent. 8/10

Darren McGregor - Cowden's most consistent performer this season. Starting to blossom into a top class player. 8/10

John Armstrong - Immense at both ends of the pitch. Double takes his tally to three in two games. 9/10

Sandy Hodge - Commanding performance from the former Alloa player. 7/10

Marek Tomana - Celebrated his new contract with another classy display and an assist before limping off with 14 minutes remaining. 8/10

Derek Fleming - Veteran played his part with two assists to set up Armstrong's goals. 7/10

John Dempster - More like the player of last season. Held the ball up brilliantly and unlucky not to get on the score sheet. 8/10

Paul McQuade - Hot shot took his tally to 9 for the season with two clinical finishes. 9/10

Mark Ramsay - Back in from the start and was a danger throughout. Another player who is getting back to their best. 7/10

Sub (76 mins): Jay Stein - On for Tomana as Cowden looked for more goals. 5/10

Sub (80 mins): John Gemmell - The big striker has struggled in recent weeks but looked the part after coming on as a sub. 6/10

Subs not used – Mark Baxter, Scott Linton & David Hay.

ELGIN CITY: Andy McNulty, David Niven, Ally McDonald, Mark Nicholson, Guy Kerr, Kenny Gilbert, Craig Campbell, Ross O'Donaghue, Darren Shallicker, Paul Kaczan, Kenny Wright (David Allan 76). Subs not used – Jason Crooks, David Hind, Steven McKay & Ally Ridgers.

Albion Rovers 3, Cowdenbeath 1

Date: Saturday 1st November 2008

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Cliftonhill

Attendance: 259

Man of the Match: Marek Tomana

Two goals in the closing 16 minutes saw us crash to our first defeat at Cliftonhill for eight years but we still remained in third place after Montrose went down to league leaders Stenhousemuir at Links Park.

It was an unchanged starting line up which took the field at Coatbridge as Cowden looked to get over the disappointment of the previous weeks Scottish Cup exit.

Rovers opened the scoring after 16 minutes when Bobby Barr unleashed a shot from the 20 yards into the Cowden net.

With 58 minutes gone we grabbed an equaliser when a corner from Fleming was headed towards the home goal by Gemmell, keeper McLuskey failed to hold the ball which John Armstrong gratefully prodded home for his first goal of the season.

In 74 minutes Rovers once again took the lead in spectacular fashion when a corner from Adam was volleyed home by Adam Benton.

As we fought to salvage a point we were dealt a further blow as the game went into injury time when Ross Harris fired home a net bursting shot from 30 yards to seal only home sides second home win of the year. Adamson picked up the only booking of the afternoon shortly after replacing Fairbairn at the interval.

COWDEN:

Scott Gallacher - No chance with the goals and will rarely face that quality of shooting over 90 minutes. 6/10

Dene Droudge - Young central defender deputized at right back for Mark Baxter. Gave his all but struggled to cope with the direct play of the Albion Rovers forwards. 6/10

Derek Fleming - 'Flee' set up the Cowden goal but other than that it was not his day. 6/10

Darren McGregor - Outstanding once again in the middle of the park. Was neat and tidy in possession and accurate in the tackle. 8/10

John Armstrong - Scored his first goal of the season to bring Cowden back into the game. 7/10

Sandy Hodge - Steady performance but like his team mates gave Albion too much space at the edge of the box. 6/10

Brian Fairbairn - Antonymous in the first half and remained indoors at the interval. 5/10

Marek Tomana - Competed with Bobby Barr for the outstanding talent. Showed some great touches. 8/10

John Dempster - Second consecutive start but once again failed to shine. Far better player than showing at the moment. 5/10

John Gemmell - Started the season in great form but has gone off the boil in recent weeks. Assist for goal but needs to do more. 5/10

Paul McQuade - Cowden's biggest goal threat but starved of good possession. 7/10

Sub (45 mins): Kenny Adamson - On at the break for Fairbairn and added some steel to the midfield. 6/10

Sub (61 mins): Mark Ramsay - Replaced Droudge as Cowden went all out to win the game. 5/10

Sub (84 mins): Jay Stein - On for the last 6 minutes but never kicked a ball. 4/10

Subs not used – Scott Linton & David Hay.

ALBION ROVERS: Chris McLuskey, Alan Reid, Michael McGowan, Ciaran Donnelly, Alan Benton, Todd Lumsden, Ross Harris, Tommy Coyne (Mark Pollok 61), Steven Canning, Bobby Barr (Graham Eaglesham 89), Callam Adam (Danny Ferry 79). Subs not used – Robert Walker & Tony Mitchell.

Cowdenbeath 1, Elgin City 2

Date: Saturday 25th October 2008

Competition: Homecoming Scottish Cup 2R

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 228

Man of the Match: John Armstrong

A goal 19 minutes from time saw Elgin pick up their first ever win at Central Park as we crashed out of the Homecoming Scottish Cup. There were three changes to the side which had picked up a narrow win at Annan seven days previously with skipper Mark Baxter missing out on the opportunity of making his 90th appearance for the club due to injury. Youngster Dene Droudge came back into the side for the first time since August as his replacement along with Brian Fairbairn and John Dempster while Jay Shields and Mark Ramsay dropped down to the bench.

The game kicked off in the driving rain and wind which swept across the country with Cowden playing with the strong wind behind them. Despite a few early flurries there was little in the way of goalmouth action in the opening stages before the visitors opened the scoring with their first real chance after 27 minutes. A cross from Crooks was not dealt well by the home defence and the ball fell to Paul Kaczan who headed home from a few yards out at the back post.

Three minutes later there was a let off for Cowden when keeper Gallacher pulled down Kaczan on the edge of the box but was thankfully only yellow carded by referee Boyle. The resulting free kick from Shallacker was then saved by the on loan Rangers youngster.

As the first half drew to a close Elgin came close to adding a second goal after 42 minutes when a low cross from Gilbert was hit first time by Kaczan and flew narrowly past the post.

A minute later Cowden came even closer to grabbing an equaliser when an angled shot by Fairbairn from 16 yards came off the visitors post and was cleared to safety by the defence.

Five minutes after the break we eventually got back on level terms when after a good build up Gemmell set up top scorer Paul McQuade to slot a low shot past McNulty for his seventh goal of the campaign.

With 67 minutes gone we had a good chance to take the lead when Tomana laid the ball off to Armstrong but his first time shot from 15 yards flew narrowly over the bar.

At the other end O'Donoghue fired in a 30 yard shot which was finger tipped round the post by Gallacher.

Elgin substitute Kenny Wright, who had only been on the park for two minutes, scored what proved to be the winner after 71 minutes. Campbell whipped over a corner from the right which floated over the home defence and Wright was on hand at the back post to head home from a few yards out.

As the game drew to a close there were two late bookings firstly visiting keeper McNulty for protesting after a foul was awarded against his side and then Tomana for committing a foul.

Right on the final whistle Cowden had one last chance on the visiting goal when a Gemmell shot deflected of a defender and bounced out for a corner.

COWDEN:

Scott Gallacher - Couple of good saves but struggled with cross balls in the windy conditions. Perhaps fortunate to avoid a 1st half red card. 6/10

Dene Droudge - Made his first start since August after Mark Baxter failed a late fitness test. Another player who struggled to master the swirling wind. 6/10

Derek Fleming - Composed as ever in possession and delivered a number of dangerous 1st half wind assisted corners. Fell out of the game after the break. 7/10

Darren McGregor - Usual energy in the middle of the park but found himself isolated at times. 7/10

John Armstrong - Another commanding performance from the Hearts man. Also attempted to drive forward from the back. 8/10

Sandy Hodge - Steady at the back but let down again at times by his distribution. 6/10

Brian Fairbairn - Unlucky with effort that came back off the post. Got himself into some great wide positions but must find better final ball. 7/10

Marek Tomana - Some moments of magic left his opponents mesmerised but not as influential as he can be. 7/10

John Gemmell - Fine assist for the equaliser but will be disappointed with his overall contribution. 5/10

John Dempster - Came in for his first start of the season but anonymous for most of the game. 5/10

Paul McQuade - Cowden's most dangerous attacker. Came close with long range effort before getting on the end of Gemmell's cross to score his 7th of the season. 7/10

Sub (80 mins): Jay Stein - Replaced Fairbairn with 10 minutes to go as Cowden chased an equaliser. 5/10

Subs not used – Jay Shields, Kenny Adamson, Mark Ramsay & David Hay.

ELGIN CITY: Andy McNulty, Kenny Gilbert, Ally McDonald, Mark Nicholson, Guy Kerr, David Hind (David Niven 58), Craig Campbell, Ross O'Donoghue, Darren Shallicker (Kenny Wright 69), Paul Kaczan, Jason Crooks. Subs not used – David Allan, Liam Keogh & Ally Ridgers.

Annan Athletic 0, Cowdenbeath 1

Date: Saturday 18th October 2008

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Galabank

Attendance: 578

Man of the Match: Paul McQuade

The second quarter of the league campaign resumed on Saturday with a narrow win on what was our first ever visit to Galabank. There were two changes to the starting line up which had draw a blank against East Stirlingshire with Jay Shields and Mark Ramsay both returning after impressive performances for the reserves in midweek. Kenny Adamson moved down to the bench while Jay Stein failed to make the final sixteen.

The home side, who had lost their previous three games, almost opened the scoring in the first minute when Bell pushed the ball into the path of Sloan who saw his shot go narrowly past the post.

After just six minutes gone Annan were reduced to ten men when Kevin Neilson rashly brought down Tomana on the edge of the box and picked up a straight red card from referee Madden.

We pushed hard for an opener and Tomana, who was running the home defence ragged, almost broke the deadlock when he ran clear but flicked his shot just past the post.

The breakthrough however came after 22 minutes when Ramsay whipped in a cross to Paul McQuade who bulleted the ball home from close range.

Eight minutes from the interval we had a great opportunity to double our advantage when Gemmell fired in a dipping 20 yard volley which landed on the roof of the home net.

The home side were handed a lifeline after 56 minutes with the award of a dubious penalty after the ball came off Baxter. Justice was done however when keeper Gallacher pulled off a fine save from Mike Jack's effort.

It was the start of a two minutes spell that the home side's top scorer would rather forget as he was firstly booked for dissent and then sent off after a tackle on Tomana.

Despite going down to ten men the home side battled away bravely but never seriously looked like breaking through a Cowden rearguard which has conceded only six goals in the last nine outings.

McGregor and Shields were booked along with Annan's Townsley.

COWDEN:

Scott Gallacher – Youngsters best performance in a Cowden jersey. Good handling throughout and top class save from Jack's penalty. 8/10

Mark Baxter – Had his opponent in his back pocket and played a vital role in another clean sheet for Cowden. 7/10

Jay Shields – Surprise inclusion after spell out of the team. Has impressed for the reserves but didn't get to grips with this game. 6/10

Darren McGregor – Industrious in the middle of the park and kept possession well. 7/10

John Armstrong – Totally dominant display from the on-loan Hearts man. 8/10

Sandy Hodge – Tower of strength at the back and forming an effective partnership with Armstrong. 7/10

Mark Ramsay – ‘Mini' returned to the starting XI and can be pleased with his contribution. Assist for the goal. 7/10

Derek Fleming – Solid display at full back from the veteran defender. 7/10

John Gemmell – Fantastic dipping short in the first half was the highlight. Fell out of the game and replaced by Dempster. 6/10

Marek Tomana – Was at the heart of both Annan dismissals as the home side struggled to contain the Slovakian play maker. 8/10

Paul McQuade – Now Cowden's top scorer after scoring his 6th goal of the season. Poachers finish at the back post. 8/10

Sub (62 mins): John Dempster - Replaced Gemmell just after the hour mark and came close to finding the net. 6/10

Sub (72 mins): John O'Neil - The veteran midfielder was a surprise inclusion in the 16 and made his first appearance of the season with 18 minutes remaining. 5/10

Sub (75 mins): Brian Fairbairn - Scored a double for the reserves on Tuesday night but unable to repeat feat with only 15 minutes on the field. 5/10

Subs not used – Kenny Adamson & David Hay.

ANNAN ATHLETIC: Craig Summersgill, Gary Brown, Alan Inglis, Derek Townsley, Kevin Neilson, Mike Jack, Steven Sloan, Chris Jardine, Graeme Bell (Grant Parker 67), Darren Johnstone (Ryan Adamson 67), Hugh Cameron (Adam Kassim 67). Subs not used – Stuart Hill & Dougie Calder.

Cowdenbeath 0, East Stirling 0

Date: Saturday 4th October 2008

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 431

Man of the Match: Marek Tomana

Cowden closed the first quarter of the league campaign with the first goal less game at Central Park since April 2007, when Stranraer were the visitors.

It was an unchanged home line up from the previous weeks win against Montrose which took to the field in horrendous conditions with driving rain and a strong wind.

The visitors quickly threatened the home goal and after only two minutes an angled shot from Cramb was palmed to safety by Gallacher.

Seven minutes later Tomana made ground towards the Shire box and slotted the ball to McQuade who shot inches wide of the post and soon after he shot over the bar from 14 yards. Fleming then fired a free kick into the visitors box but Forrest managed to head the ball clear of Gemmell who was waiting to pounce.

At the other end of the park a fee kick from Tully was then headed just over by Bolochoweckyj. Minutes later Cramb played the ball into the path of Rodgers but Gallacher saved the day to keep the score level at the interval.

Three minutes after the restart Rodgers whipped an inviting cross into the Cowden goalmouth but Armstrong was on hand to clear the danger. Minutes later Ure sent a free kick into the Cowden box but Gallacher managed to punch the ball clear.

With 63 minutes gone the visitors had a great opportunity to break the deadlock when Cramb beat the onrushing Gallacher to the ball by his shot was cleared for a corner by Hodge.

As the game wore on a draw looked the likely outcome but the visitors still looked dangerous on the break and with 12 minutes to go Rodgers broke through the home defence but a timely tackle from McGregor cleared the danger.

Gemmell was booked in the first half and was joined in referee Hilland's book by the Shire trio of Forrest, Richardson and Tully.

COWDEN:

Scott Gallacher - Not the busiest afternoon for the on-loan Rangers keeper but had a couple of shaky moments. 6/10

Mark Baxter - Below the high standard you expect from 'Beaky'. Carless in possession. 5/10

Derek Fleming - Distribution not up to his usual standard. 5/10

Darren McGregor - Made a couple of lung-busting runs into the opposition box and also some vital tackles at the back. 7/10

John Armstrong - Strong in the air against Cramb but one moment of carelessness almost lead to a goal. 7/10

Sandy Hodge - Strolled through the game at the back until picking up a facial injury. Needs to improve his distribution though. 7/10

Paul McQuade - Cowden offered little in attack and McQuade was unable to conjure up any magic this time. 5/10

Kenny Adamson - Worked hard at breaking up up opposition attacks but less effective going forward. 6/10

John Gemmell - Starved of decent service but mis-kicked one of the few opportunities that came his way. 5/10

Marek Tomana - Pulled the strings in the 1st half but gradually drifted out of the game as Cowden's midfield play completely deteriorated. 7/10

Jay Stein - Did not make any meaningful contribution to game. Was on the periphery for the entire 90 minutes. 5/10

Sub (66 minutes): John Dempster - Replaced Gemmell after 66 minutes. Scored again for the reserves on Tuesday night but no sight of goal in this game. 5/10

Sub (75 mins): Greg Ross - On for the injured Hodge for final 15 minutes. 5/10

Sub (78 minutes): Brian Fairbairn - Has been a match winner on a number of occasions this season but unable to effect the outcome of this game. 5/10

Subs not used – Mark Ramsay & David Hay.

EAST STIRLINGSHIRE: Jamie Barclay, Paul Hay, Dean Richardson, Eddie Forrest, Michael Bolochoweckyj, Craig Tully, Craig Donaldson, Gary Kelly, Colin Cramb (Brian Graham 78), Derek Ure, Andy Rodgers (Marc McKenzie 84). Subs not used – David Dunn, Sean Anderson & Jamie Newton.

Cowdenbeath 2, Montrose 1

Date: Saturday 27th September 2008

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 296

Man of the Match: Kenny Adamson

A wonderful goal from Paul McQuade saw Cowden move back up into second place in the league table as they leapfrogged the visitors.

The Gable Endies arrived at Central Park on the back of three straight wins and along with league leaders Stenhousemuir were unbeaten in the league. Central Park has however proved to be an unhappy hunting ground for Montrose who have failed to beat us on our own patch since February 1997.

There were four changes to the starting line up which had lost to a late goal at Dumbarton the previous Saturday. Keeper Scott Gallacher made his debut while Jay Stein made his first start against his old side. Kenny Adamson made a return to the side along with Sandy Hodge. Dropping down to the bench were David Hay, Greg Ross and Brian Fairbairn while Joe Mbu was sidelined with an ankle injury picked up against the Sons.

Cowden broke the deadlock after 32 minutes when Tomana set up McQuade who sent over a low cross from the right into the path of John Gemmell who slotted the ball home from close range for his fifth goal of the season.

Just on the stroke of half time however the visitors level led the score when John Baird blasted home an angled shot after being set up by Hegarty after a neat one - two.

With 19 minutes left on the clock McQuade sealed our third successive home league win with a delightful goal when he went on a run to beat four defenders before sending the ball past Kelly from 12 yards.

As the game drew to a close Montrose finished the game with ten men after substitute Chris McLeod, who had only been on the park for four minutes, picked up a straight red card after a rash tackle on Fleming. The only other card of the afternoon saw Stein booked against his old team mates in the first half.

COWDEN:

Scott Gallacher – The loan signing was a surprise inclusion. Can be happy with his debut after a shaky start. 7/10

Mark Baxter – Terrific energy to get up and down the right. His will-to-win is infectous and pushed his team mates on to secure the points. 8/10

Kenny Adamson – Brilliant performance from Adamson. Covered every blade of grass to help Cowden win the midfield battle. 9/10

Darren McGregor – Has been in super form since return to Central Park but not one of his more effective games. 6/10

John Armstrong – Dominant in the air and on the ground. Still finding his feet after long spell out injured but a class act at the back. 8/10

Sandy Hodge – Returned to the side to replace injured Mbu. Commanding performance alongside Armstrong. 7/10

Paul McQuade – Drifted in and out of the game but his goal was worth the admission price itself. Wonderful technique, vision and composure to score the winner. Also provided an assist for the opening goal. 9/10

Derek Fleming – Played his part in a solid defensive performance that limited Montrose to few chances. 6/10

John Gemmell – Harrased and bullied the Montrose backline and was rewarded with another goal. 8/10

Marek Tomana – A joy to watch. His passing and ball retention was top notch and was his vision to open up the Montrose rearguard for the opening goal. Also tracked back to great effect. 9/10

Jay Stein – First start since signing at the end of August from opponents Montrose but was largely inaffective. Player of undoubted ability and showed glimpses of what he capable of. 6/10

Sub (74 mins): John Dempster - Replaced Gemmell with 16 minutes remaining. 5/10

Sub (79 mins): Brian Fairbairn - On for Stein late on and looked lively. 5/10

Sub (82 mins): Greg Ross - Replaced McQuade and helped ensure full points. 5/10

Subs not used – Mark Ramsay & David Hay.

MONTROSE: Greg Kelly, David Worrell, Stephen Thomson, Gerry McLaughlan, Jamie Buchan, Chris Hegarty (Keith Gibson 67), Paul Stewart (Chris McLeod 84), Hugh Davidson, Scott Anson, John Baird (Roddy Hunter 87), Kevin Bradley. Subs not used – John Maitland & Mark Peat.

Man of the Match: Darren McGregor

A goal six minutes into injury time from Ben Gordon denied Cowden a point at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium as we went down to our second successive away league defeat.

There were three changes to the side which had beaten Berwick. Skipper Mark Baxter returned to the side after his suspension along with Joe Mbu and Paul McQuade who had recovered from injury. Kenny Adamson and Mark Ramsay dropped to the bench while Sandy Hodge watched the game from the sidelines.

We started the game strongly and had a good chance in from of goal after just two minutes but McQuade shot over from a Baxter cross. In an end to end opening half the Sons fought back and Carcary fired in two good crosses but fortunately for us there was no one on had to cause danger.

At the other end Armstrong played a good ball to Ross but his shot crashed off Fairbairn and the home defence cleared the danger.

Nine minutes from the interval the Sons opened the scoring when Derek Carcary went on a fine run down the right wing beating Tomana before firing an angled shot past Hay high into the top corner of the net.

As the first half drew to a close Dumbarton came close to adding to their goal when O'Byrne hit the woodwork from close range, while at the other end home keeper McEwan denied Gemmell.

The second half saw chances few and far between for both sides until inury time. With two minutes of overtime on the clock Paul McQuade grabbed a dramatic equaliser when he shot home from close range.

However four minutes later Gordon rose to head home from Gray's free kick to grab a winner for the home side with the last touch of the game.

Seven players found their way into referee O'Reilly's notebook. Cowden's Ross and Fleming were joined by O'Byrne, Wilson, Canning, Moore and Murray of the home side.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Helpless from Carcary effort and left with no protection for the winner. 7/10

Mark Baxter - Returned after suspension and usual committed display from the skipper. 7/10

Greg Ross - Covered a lot of ground in the middle of the park before being replaced after 64 minutes. 7/10

Darren McGregor - Powerhouse display from McGregor. Harried opposition, strong in the tackle and made good use of the ball in possession. 9/10

Joe Mbu - Big defender returned after injury and slotted in well beside Armstrong. 7/10

John Armstrong - Solid display alongside Mbu. Looked the making of a good partnership but both players will have to be on their toes with competition for places. 7/10

Brian Fairbairn - Always a goal threat but found the going difficult this time around. 6/10

Derek Fleming - Not as effective as recent weeks with unusually poor distribution at times. 6/10

John Gemmell - Handful for the Dumbarton defence and will be a vital player this season. But needs to concentrate on his own game and play to the whistle. 7/10

Marek Tomana - Lively in opening half hour but caught out for the opening goal and replaced shortly after. 6/10

Paul McQuade - Recover from injury and replaced Ramsay in the starting lien-up. Cowden's most dangerous attacker and was rewarded for his efforts with late goal. 8/10

Sub (41 mins): Jay Stein - Entered play 4 minutes before half-time. Saw plenty of the ball but not able to influence the game. 6/10

Sub (64 mins): Kenny Adamson - Unlucky to miss out but on for the final 26 minutes. Industrious in the middle of the park. 7/10

Cowdenbeath 2, Berwick Rangers 1

Date: Saturday 13th September 2008

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 375

Man of the Match: Marek Tomana

Two goals in the opening nine minutes proved to be enough to see off a stern second half challenge from Berwick Rangers and maintain second place behind leaders Stenhousemuir.

There were three changes to the side which had narrowly lost to Airdrie the previous week. Skipper Mark Baxter was suspended while Paul McQuade was on the sidelines due to injury, with youngster Danny Mackay dropping down to the bench. New boy Greg Ross came straight into the side for his debut and was joined by John Gemmell and Marek Tomana who both recovered from injuries.

There was only two minutes gone on the clock when John Gemmell bagged his fourth goal of the campaign. The big striker picked up a through pass from Tomana and coolly slotted the ball past McGurk from 14 yards.

Seven minutes later in was 2-0 when Brian Fairbairn dived to head home a Ross cross from eight yards. Cowden threatened to run riot during the opening 45 minutes with a succession of chances but allowed the visitors more into the game in the second period.

The recharged Borderers came out for the second period looking to get back into the game and on the hour mark they pulled a goal back when former Central Parker Gribben whipped over a corner which was headed home by Jamie Ewart from close range.

There were a few tense moments for Cowden thereafter as the visitors went in search of an equaliser, but keeper Hay and his defence held firm to secure a vital three points.

There was one booking during the game with Lennox of the visitors picking up a yellow card in the first half.

COWDEN:

David Hay – Virtually a spectator in the 1st half but earned his corn late on with some top class saves. 8/10

Greg Ross – Loanee took time to settle but excellent display once he found his feet. Great delivery for 2nd goal. 7/10

Derek Fleming – Strolled through the game at full-back. Sound defensively and again used the ball well. 7/10

Darren McGregor – Broke up play in the middle of the park and supported front men to great effect. Stepped back into central defence later in the game. 8/10

John Armstrong – Dominated in the air and gave his opponent little change all afternoon. 8/10

Sandy Hodge – Generally solid but couple of shaky moments. Replaced by Shields on 67 minutes in tactical move. 6/10

Brian Fairbairn – Scored 2nd goal to take his tally to 5 for the season. Constant threat in the opening 45 but dropped out of the game. Fantastic tackle on the edge of his own box in the closing minutes typified the squad's work rate and will-to-win. 7/10

Kenny Adamson – Unselfish display from teenager in the middle of the park. Constantly won the ball from the opposition and retained possession. Done the simple things well. 8/10

John Gemmell – Clinical finish after only 2 minutes opened the scoring. 4th goal of the season and was unlucky not to end up with a hat-trick. 8/10

Mark Ramsay – Offers boundless energy and pace from midfield. Like Fairbairn fell out of the game late on and was replaced. 7/10

Marek Tomana – Class act. Great vision for the opener and opened up the Berwick defence at will. Outstanding work rate. 9/10

Competition: ALBA Challenge Cup Quarter-Final

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 643

Man of the Match: John Armstrong

Two second half goals from former Kilmarnock striker Paul Di Giacomo ended Cowden's ALBA Challenge Cup at the quarter final stage last Sunday afternoon.

There were two changes to the starting line up which had narrowly lost at Stenhousemuir. The injured duo of John Gemmell and Marek Tomana were forced to watch the game from the stand while Mark Ramsay came back into the starting line up along with John Armstrong after his return from Hearts.

After a goal less opening period the Diamonds opened the scoring in the 53rd minute when Di Giacomo took a pass from McKenna before firing a shot past Hay from 16 yards.

With fifteen minutes remaining Di Giacomo doubled the visitor's advantage when he gathered a long ball from Lovering before shooting home from 12 yards.

Cowden never threw in the towel however and with 11 minutes to go pulled back a goal with a superbly placed 35 yard free kick from Brian Fairbairn which beat SFL ‘Player of the Month' Stephen Robertson.

Any chances of a come back however were dashed five minutes later when captain Mark Baxter was given a straight red card by referee Finnie after a foul on Brown. Airdrie's Smyth was also booked.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Protected brilliantly by his back four in the 1st half. Beaten all ends up for both goals with markers posted missing though after the break. 7/10

John Armstrong - Made his first start after returning from Hearts. Immense. 9/10

Sandy Hodge - The central defence was solid and Hodge can be very pleased with his display. 8/10

Brian Fairbairn - Beginning to build a reputation at Central Park as a free kick specialist. 8/10

Derek Fleming - Has impressed since returning to full fitness and again used his cultured left foot to great effect. 7/10

Paul McQuade - Worked hard up front but could have done with more support at times. 7/10

Danny Mackay - Youngster has adapted well to 1st team football and excelled in front of the back four. 8/10

Mark Ramsay - Very industrious but chances were at a premium against solid 1st division defence. 7/10

Sub (68 mins): John Dempster - replaced McQuade but unable to get on the scoresheet. 6/10

Sub (76 mins): Scott Linton - Teenager got last 14 minutes and worked hard. 6/10

Stenhousemuir 1, Cowdenbeath 0

Date: Saturday 30th August 2008

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Ochilview

Attendance: 456

Man of the Match: Darren McGregor

A goal five minutes from time from Kevin Motion saw Stenhousmuir leapfrog us to go top of the table.

For the trip to Larbert Mark Baxter and Marek Tomana returned to the line up to replace the sidelined Joe Mbu and Jay Shields.

We dominated the first half and large parts of the second period but were unable to breakthrough a Warriors defence which at times lead a charmed life. Cowden attacked the home goal from the off and after just two minutes a Fleming free kick was floated into the box and keeper Renton done well to hold a Gemmell header.

On eight minut es it looked like Gemmell had headed us into the lead but his effort was ruled out by the match officials. Soon after McQuade tried his luck from 16 yards but shot just wide of the target, then a long kick out by Hay reached Gemmell who shot just over.

Just after the quarter hour Fairbairn cracked a 28 yard shot off the crossbar and seconds later a headed from Gemmell also hit the bar as Cowden pounded the home goal.

The big striker was out of luck again soon after when he met a cross from Fairbairn but his shot was cleared off the line by the home defence.

We then suffered a blow when Tomana, who had endured a few tough challenges, hobbled off to be replaced by Ramsay. As the opening 45 minutes came to a close McQuade found himself through on goal but his shot was blocked by Renton.

The second half was a more even affair but Gemmell still had a few opportunities to break the deadlock. However after 69 minutes the Warriors had their first real effort on the Cowden goal when McGroarty cracked a long range effort which Hay done well to turn round the post.

The only goal of the afternoon came with five minutes remaining when Thomson surged down the right before sending over a low cross to Motion who blasted inside the post from eight yards.

There were three bookings for each side – Brand, Ferguson and Lyle of the home side along with Adamson, Fleming and Gemmell.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Very quiet afternoon but outstanding save on 69 minutes to keep out effort from McGroarty. 7/10

Mark Baxter - Skipper returned to the starting line-up and played 80 minutes. Nearing full fitness after a lengthy period out with injury. 7/10

Kenny Adamson - Returned after a spell out of the team and a surprise inclusion in the middle of the park. Justified his selection with battling display. 7/10

Darren McGregor - Stepped back into central defence to cover for the injured Mbu. Never gave Dalziel a kick of the ball. Outstanding. 9/10

Danny Mackay - 3rd consecutive start for the 17-year old and looks a great prospect. 7/10

Sandy Hodge - Commanding in the air and used the ball well from the back. 8/10

Brian Fairbairn - Electric in the 1st half with dangerous deliveries and a shot that came back off the bar. Not in the game after the break and replaced after an hour. 7/10

Derek Fleming - Composed on the ball and making the left-back spot his own. 7/10

John Gemmell - Tormented the Stenny back line all afternoon and somehow failed to get on the score sheet. 8/10

Marek Tomana - Was running riot in the middle of the park until one late tackle too many forced the Slovakian off. 7/10

Paul McQuade - Went close with a number of efforts but denied by Renton. 8/10

Sub (26 mins): Mark Ramsay - Replaced injured Tomana early on and carried on the good work. 8/10

Sub (60 mins): Jay Stein - New addition made his debut on the hour mark for Fairbairn. 6/10

Sub (77 mins): John Dempster - Came on againt his former club but unable to make an impression. 5/10

Subs not used – Scott Linton & Sam Morris.

Competition: Co-operative Insurance Cup 2R

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 1423

Man of the Match: John Gemmell

Cowden crashed out of the Co-operative Insurance Cup at a wet Central Park to last season's beaten finalists who showed their superiority with three second half goals. There were two changes to the starting line up which had beaten Elgin four days previously with Jay Shields and Paul McQuade returning to the side and Mark Baxter and Marek Tomana dropping to the bench.

The Arabs opened the scoring on the half hour when Jon Daly headed home a Conway corner from close range. Five minutes from the interval we then left with a mountain to climb when David Goodwillie added a second goal for the visitors. A throw in from Grainger was helped on by Daly and the youngster beat Hay from close range.

Two minutes into the second half Shields pulled out a good save from keeper Zaluska, who had been called into the Polish international squad the previous day. We however found ourselves three down two minutes later when Goodwillie turned provider for Daly who blasted the ball home from 14 yards.

On the hour mark United extended their lead further when a poor clearance fell to the front man who advanced ten yards before firing a 22 yarder home.

Cowden kept plugging away and pulled back a consolation with 16 minutes to go when McQuade did the spadework on the left and his cut back was dispatched past the keeper by John Dempster for his opening goal of the season .

However with nine minutes to go former Central Parker Gomis cut the ball back to Daly who fired home to complete his hat trick. Three Cowden players picked up bookings during the game - Gemmell, Fleming and Dempster.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Made a couple of top drawer saves but unable to stop United hitting 5. 7/10

Danny Mackay - Under 19 star retained his place and did not look out of place against SPL opponents. 7/10

Derek Fleming - Used the ball well from left-back position and provided some dangerous deliveries. 7/10

Darren McGregor - Covered every blade of grass and had his work cut out against former Central Parker Mogaro Gomis. 7/10

Joe Mbu - Recovered from injury to take his place and was solid once again. 8/10

Sandy Hodge - Played well alongside Mbu and and can be pleased with performance despite losing 5. 7/10

Brian Fairbairn - Looked good on the ball but unable to get into the game enough. 6/10

Jay Shields - Excellent 1st half display before falling out of the game later on. 7/10

John Gemmell - Caused SPL defence no end of problems and should have opened the scoring but denied by Dodds tackle. 8/10

Mark Ramsay - Terrier in the middle of the park and refuses to give up. Used pace well when given the opportunity. 7/10

Paul McQuade - Played well on the left and great play to set up Dempster for the goal. 7/10

Sub (59 mins): Mark Baxter - Beaky continued his comeback after returning againts Elgin. Will be disappointed with his part in United's 4th but great vision to play in McQuade for the goal. 6/10

Sub (67 mins): John Dempster - Striker took another step towards full match fitness and cooly finished for his first goal of the season. 6/10

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Borough Briggs

Attendance: 537

Man of the Match: Darren McGregor

We maintained our 100% away record to go top of the table after a hard fought win at Borough Briggs on Saturday afternoon. There were four changes to the side which had beaten Albion Rovers seven days previously. Captain Mark Baxter made his comeback after his long lay off and youngster Danny Mackay made his full debut after a few appearances from the bench, while Joe Mbu returned from his suspension. Mark Ramsay also came back into the side after missing the previous two games after picking up an injury at Forfar.

On the quarter hour mark Cowden had their first real chance to break the deadlock when McGregor was fouled 25 yards out but home keeper MacNulty saved Fairbain's free kick.

On the half hour Tomana send over an inviting cross from the left which was met by Ramsay who headed just over from close range.

The home sides reply was a few long range efforts which were comfortably saved by Hay.

Two minutes from the interval we were given a great chance to open the scoring when Fairbairn was brought down in the box by McKay who was handed a straight red card by referee McDermott. Fairbairn himself took the resulting spot kick which was saved by MacNulty.

Hay had to be alert seven minutes into the second half and pulled off a good save from a Nicholson shot.

A quick fire double on the hour sealed the three points however. Firstly in 59 minutes Darren McGregor scored in his second successive visit to Elgin when he rose above MacNulty to head home a Fairbairn cross. A minute later it was game over for the home side when Ramsay carved open the home defence with a low cross which fell to Gemmell to power home from 12 yards.

As the clock wound down Elgin had a good chance to grab a goal with eight minutes remaining when they had a free kick from Shallicker on the edge of the 18 yard box but Hay tipped his effort over the bar.

McGregor was booked along with Hind and Shallicker of the home side.

Cowdenbeath 2, Albion Rovers 1

Date: Saturday 16th August 2008

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 302

Man of the Match: John Gemmell

Goals in each half from Brian Fairbairn and John Gemmell gave Cowden their second hard fought win over Rovers in the space of four day. There were four changes to the starting line up which had beaten the Coatbridge side in midweek. Darren McGregor, Dene Droudge Brian Fairbairn and Marek Tomana returned to the side while long term injury victims Mark Baxter and John Dempster made a welcome return to the bench.

The visitors had the first real chance of the afternoon after six minutes when a McGowan cross from the left found Pat Walker who shot wide of the Cowden goal. Three minutes later Gemmell advanced into the Rovers box after being fed through by McGregor but Robert Walker made a timely challenge to put the ball out for a corner. From Fairbairn's corner kick Gemmell headed wide of the target.

On the 15 minute mark Gemmell once again had a good chance to open the scoring when he met a low cross from Tomana but his shot from 12 yards was blocked by keeper Scott.

Cowden eventually opened the scoring after 2 2 minutes when a neat piece of football by Tomana set up Brian Fairbairn who blasted the ball past Scott from 17 yards.

As the opening period drew to a close the visitors looked to get back on level terms and Smith latched onto a Ferry pass but a fine tackle by Droudge saw the danger cleared. Soon after Donnelly had a snap shot from the edge of the box which flew just wide of the post. Right on the whistle McQuade was put through on the visitors' goal but a Rovers defender was on hand to clear the danger.

Four minutes into the second period saw a corner from Fleming cleared by the Rovers defence to Fairbairn whose low shot from 18 yards was saved by Scott. Soon after Fairbairn once again took a pop at goal with a 22 yard shot which went just wide of the target.

Cowden were however shocked in 58 minutes when Rovers grabbed an equaliser with their first shot on target. A long kick out by Scott caught out the Cowden defence with the ball falling to Pat Walker who slotted the ball past Hay.

In 71 minutes Gemmell came close once more to scoring against his old side when a long throw in by substitute Linton was headed just over the bar. Rovers however spurred on by their equaliser came close to taking the lead themselves with 11 minutes to go when Barr worked his way into the Cowden box but his shot from 12 yards was deflected for a corner, which eventually saw Coyne shoot over.

Two minutes later Cowden grabbed a spectacular winner when a cross from the right wing by Fairbairn reached John Gemmell who turned an overhead kick high in to the visitors net from 12 yards. From the restart the visitors almost grabbed a quick fire equaliser when Coyne found himself through on goal but a double block from Hay saved the day and points for Cowden.

Adamson and Hodge were booked along with Pat Walker and Reid of the visitors.

COWDEN:

David Hay – Untroubled until late in the game. Unlucky not to keep out Walker's effort and great double save to deny Coyne. 7/10

Dene Droudge – Returned to the side and again impressed. Solid defensively and supported the attack well. 7/10

Kenny Adamson – Steady performance from Adamson. Up against a diffiuclt opponent in Barr but coped well. 7/10

Darren McGregor – Stepped into the back four due Mbu's suspension and was excellent. Required stitches to a head wound at half-time. 8/10

Sandy Hodge – Commanind display from the stand-in captain and led by example. Will be disappointed with his part in Albion goal though. 8/10

Jay Shields – Another combatative display in the middle of the park. Distribution was poor at time however. 7/10

Brian Fairbairn – Finished off a great move with text book shot high into the net. Assist for Gemmell's winning goal. 8/10

Derek Fleming – Started 2nd game in a row and adds composure to the midfield. 7/10

John Gemmell – The match winner just shades Tomana as 'man of the match' thanks to specatular overhead goal. Worked his socks off. 9/10

Marek Tomana - Little Slovakian made is first start since the opening day defeat to Annan and was a joy to watch. Superb. Replaced late on after tiring due to lack of match fitness. 9/10

Paul McQuade – The former Dundonald Bluebell frontman has started the season in great form but was off the pace today and was replaced after 67 minutes. 6/10

Sub (67 mins): Scott Linton – On for McQuade and almost set-up Gemmell from long throw. 6/10

Sub (72 mins): John Dempster – Made his long awaited comeback from injury and looked sharp after scoring twice in a 'bounce' game on Thursday night. 6/10

Sub (85 mins): Danny Mackay – Late run out and helped secure the points. 5/10

Competition: ALBA Challenge Cup 2R

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 204

Man of the Match: Joe Mbu

A last gasp goal from Brian Fairbairn sent us through to the Quarter Finals of the ALBA Challenge Cup for the first time in 18 years. There were four changes to the starting line up which head beat Forfar the previous weekend. Youngsters Gary Cennerazzo, Jon Robertson and Jon Robertson were joined by Derek Fleming who made his first start for us since signing in the close season. Mark Ramsay who picked up a knock at Station Park was rested while Dene Droudge, Darren McGregor and Brian Fairbairn dropped down to the bench as Danny Lennon rotated his squad.

Cowden opened the scoring after just eight minutes when Paul McQuade picked up a loose ball 22 yards out and sent a powerful left footed drive into the bottom left hand corner.

However on the half hour Rovers drew level after taking advantage of a defensive lapse which saw Bobby Barr pounce to fire a low 12 yard shot past Hay. As the interval loomed Rovers had a great chance to take the lead when Mbu and Smith tangled in the box, but Hay pulled off a great save to deny Donnelly from the resulting spot kick.

Cowden restored their lead in 54 minutes when a long throw in from Linton was flicked on by McGregor into the path of John Gemmell who slotted the ball past a static Rovers defence from a few yards out.

On 72 minutes only a great save from Mitchell denied Fairbairn who fired in a well placed free kick, however three minutes later the Coatbridge side drew level when substitute Willie Martin sent home a low shot.

As extra time loomed Brian Fairbairn picked up on a loose ball on the edge of the Rovers box and sent a low shot past Mitchell. In stoppage time former Rover Gemmell almost added a fourth goal when he sent a powerful shot from 35 yards out just past the post.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Justice was done when he saved Donnelly's spot-kick to cap another top performance. 8/10

Gary Cennerazzo - Back in the side in place of fellow teenager Droudge. Started the game well but faded late on. 7/10

Kenny Adamson - Skinned on a couple of occasions by his opponent but stuck to his task. Poor clearing header led to first Albion goal. 6/10

Jon Robertson - Played in front of the back four. Will be pleased to have started the game and made a decent contribution but is capable of much more. 7/10

Joe Mbu - Outsanding diplay from big Joe. Abosulote rock at the back. 9/10

Sandy Hodge - Forming a good partnership with Mbu but caught out a couple of times. 6/10

Scott Linton - Another player who started well before dropping out of the game. Assist for second goal. 7/10

Jay Shields - Worked hard in the middle of the park and came close to opening his Cowden account with couple of efforts. Injured late on. 7/10

John Gemmell - Scored his first goal for the club and was a handful for the Albion defence. 7/10

Derek Fleming - First start for the veteran midfielder and helped the team dominate in the first half. Ran out of steam late on. 7/10

Paul McQuade - Quality goal after 8 minutes and almost scored carbon copy late on. 7/10

Sub (51 mins): Darren McGregor - Came on just after half-time to help bolster the midfield. 6/10

Sub (51 mins): Brian Fairbairn - On at same time as McGregor and added some invention. Unlucky with a free-kick before winning the game late on. 7/10

Forfar Athletic 0, Cowdenbeath 1

Date: Saturday 9th August 2008

Competition: Irn-Bru 3rd Division

Venue: Station Park

Attendance: 412

Man of the Match: Jay Shields

Cowden kept up their fine away form to record a third successive win ‘on the road' and bury their Station Park jinx with their first win at the Angus ground in almost twelve years.

After last season's injury woes Danny Lennon had the luxury of fielding the same sixteen man squad which had won at Montrose the previous midweek. Loons boss Dick Campbell, himself of course a former player and manager, fielded four former Central Parkers in his squad. Craig Winter and Elliot Smith were in the starting line up with Martyn Fotheringham and Stephen Manson on the bench.

An even opening period saw both sides fail to break the deadlock with the Loons best chance of the half coming when Campbell and Brady combined to set up a shot which Hay pushed to safety. Fairbairn had Cowden's best chances early on but a combination of a save from Brown, and a shot wide of the post kept the scores even.

On the hour mark Adamson had a good chance to open the scoring but his angled shot hit the side netting. The breakthrough finally came after 69 minutes when McQuade cut the ball back to Gemmell in the home box. The big striker appeared to be brought down in the box and as the Loons defence hesitated McGregor rolled the ball to Mark Ramsay who fired the ball past Brown from eight yards.

With seven minutes to go we had a great opportunity to go further ahead but substitute Linton fired over. As the game moved into five minutes of injury time there was a couple of close calls as Forfar tried to bag an equaliser. Firstly Fleming was on hand to clear a header from Tulloch off the line then with almost the last kick of the game McNally fired wide of the post.

The home side picked up two bookings in the closing stages. Firstly Campbell who was followed by Tulloch into referee Northcroft's note book.

Montrose 0, Cowdenbeath 2

Date: Tuesday 5th August 2008

Competition: Co-operative Cup 1R

Venue: Links Park

Attendance: 382

Man of the Match: Joe Mbu

Cowden put the weekend disappointment behind them to progress into the second round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup at Links Park . There were two changes to the side which had lost to Annan. Dene Droudge and John Gemmell coming into replace Gary Cennerazzo and Marek Tomana.

We quickly looked for a goal and home keeper Peat had to be alert in the opening minute to deny McQuade. A mistake from the keeper almost gifted us the opening goal after five minutes when he hit a poor pass back from Buchan into the path of Gemmell who fired over.

We only had to wait a further minute however to take the lead when a Hodge free kick found Darren McGregor who rose above the home defence to head home his second goal of the season from close range.

Both sides had their chances in the opening period but the general flow of the game was interrupted with a succession of yellow cards for both sides. Montrose's hopes were further dashed seven minutes from the interval when keeper Peat hobbled off to be replaced by veteran Butter. The stopper was quickly pressed into action and did well to save a Ramsay header.

Cowden opened the second half looking to add to their lead and Ramsay saw a shot drift wide of the post and then Butter denied Fairbairn. The home side however came more into the game with a glancing header from Baird flashing past the post and a snap shot from Hegarty going just wide.

The game was eventually over as a contest after 81 minutes when Brian Fairbairn curled home a glorious free kick from 30 yards past the diving Butter. Ramsay, McGregor, Shields and Gemmell were booked along with Davidson, Thomson, Stein and McLeod of the home side.

COWDEN:

David Hay - Had a quite night with Montrose posing little threat, but handled what was thrown at him easily. 7/10.

Dene Droudge - Took over from fellow youngster Cennerazzo and put in a steady performance. 7/10.

Kenny Adamson - Another key player in a solid performance by the defence. 7/10.

Darren McGregor - Has got in to the habit of scoring with his second goal in 3 games. 8/10.

Joe Mbu - Sponsors man of the match who kept the Motrose goal threat at bay. 9/10.

Sandy Hodge - Like Mbu was a tower in the heart of the Cowden defence. 8/10.

Brian Fairbairn - Scored a cracking free kick for the winner and was promptly subbed. 7/10.

Jay Shields - Battled away well in the midfield. 7/10.

John Gemmell - Still looking to open his goal account in "official" games but it will come soon. 7/10.

Mark Ramsay - Posed a real threat to the home defence and the amount of fouls he won showed how big a threat they though he was. 8/10.

Paul McQuade - Another busy peformace from the little forward. 7/10

Sub (81 mins): Derek Fleming - Made his comeback from injury replacing Fairbairn for the closing stages. 6/10.

Sub (85 mins): Marek Tomana - Like Robertson he came on for the closing stages with little time to make an impact. 5/10.

Sub (88 mins): Jon Robertson - Youngster came on for Shields with two minutes to go as Cowden wound down the clock. 5/10.

Subs not used – Scott Linton & Sam Morris.

MONTROSE: Mark Peat (Jim Butter 38), David Worrell, Stephen Thomson, Chris McLeod. Jamie Buchan, Chris Hegarty, Keith Gibson, Hugh Davidson (Roddy Hunter 76), Paul Stewart, John Baird, Jay Stein (Stephen Black 72). Subs not used – Ross Gardiner & Daryl Nicol.

Cowdenbeath 1, Annan Athletic 4

Date: Saturday 2nd August 2008

Competition: Irn-bru 3rd Division

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 596

Man of the Match: David Hay

After impressive wins over Elgin City and Hibernian in the build up to the opening league game Cowden put in a disappointing display against the league new boys.

The game, played before the Third Division's biggest crowd of the day, was delayed by 15 minutes as the visitors were held up in a traffic jam on the Forth Road Bridge. Danny Mackay and John Ferguson (pictured) paraded the under 17 League Cup on behalf of their team mates before the game to loud cheers from the terracing.

Early on things appeared to be going to script as Cowden looked to breakdown the visiting defence and Paul McQuade had a great opportunity to break the deadlock after ten minutes when he intercepted a poor pass by keeper Summersgill but fired wide of the open goal.

Six minutes later McQuade however made amends for his error when he picked up a long clearance from Hay and chipped the ball over Summersgill from 19 yards. Soon after Summersgill pulled off a good save to deny Tomana a second goal, then as we pressed for a second goal a volley from McGregor flew inches wide of the post.

Although Cowden were in control of the game the visitors looked threatening on the break and Hay pulled of a good save to deny Johnstone. Annan created a piece of history after 29 minutes when they scored their first ever SFL goal from the penalty spot. Tomana was judged to have tugged at Neilson's jersey and Mike Jack slotted the resulting spot kick past Hay.

Five minutes from the break Ramsay came close to restoring our lead but his snap shot went over the bar.

Three minutes into the second half Jack gave Annan the lead when he fired home a spectacular volley from 18 yards. Things got worse for Cowden after 57 minutes when the visitors went further ahead. Hay blocked an initial shot from Steve Archibald who appeared to control the ball with his arm before slotting the ball past Hay.

With 15 minutes remaining Hodge had a great chance to get us back into the game but he blasted his shot over the bar. A miserable afternoon was completed in the closing minute when Darren Johnstone latched onto a through ball from Archibald before shooting home. Townsley and Neilson of the visitors picked up the only bookings of the afternoon.

COWDEN:

David Hay - One of few player to get pass marks on a very disappointing day for the Blue Brazil. Pulled off some important saves. 7/10

Gary Cennerazzo - Promising youngster has had an excellent season and start to the season but found the going tough against the newcomers. 6/10

Kenny Adamson - A day he will want to forget as the defence failed to get to grips with Annan. 6/10

Darren McGregor - Started game well and went close with volley. Fell out of the game as midfield battle was lost far too easily. 6/10

Sandy Hodge - The big defender had a 'mare. Was given the run around by Johnstone but Hodge will have been the first to put his and up and say he let himself down. 5/10

Joe Mbu - Looks an excellent signing by Lennon but was not at his best. 6/10

Brian Fairbairn - Promising start but annoymous for most of the game. Can contribute a lot more. 6/10

Jay Shields - Top player at this level but was well below par on this performance. Needs to do a lot more with the ability that is there. 5/10

Paul McQuade - Missed an easy chance after keeper mis-kicked but went some way to making amends with near finish to put Cowden ahead. 7/10

Marek Tomana - Should have put Cowden 2 up but missed one-on-one with the keeper. Hooked at the interval. 5/10

Mark Ramsay - Full of running but not his day. 6/10

Sub (45 mins): John Gemmell - Half-time sub put himself about but to no great effect. 6/10

Sub (66 mins): Scott Linton - Youngster replaced Ramsay after just ove an hour and troubled Annan with his long throws. 6/10

Subs not used – Derek Fleming, Jon Robertson & Sam Morris.

ANNAN ATHLETIC: Craig Summersgill, Gary Brown, Alan Inglis, Derek Townsley, Kevin Neilson, Mike Jack, Steven Sloan, Chris Jardine, Steve Archibald, Darren Johnstone, Lee Hooliken (Ryan Adamson 66). Subs not used – Ian Grainger, Grant Parker, Stuart Hill & Dougie Calder.

Cowdenbeath 2, Hibernian 0

Date: Monday 28th July 2008

Competition: Friendly

Venue: Central Park

Attendance: 613

Man of the Match: Jay Shields

Cowden faced Hibs on Monday night in the match dubbed the return of Mixu by the Cowden support. Danny Lennon made a couple of changes from the victorious team that played on Saturday. John Gemmell was replaced by Marek Tomana, Dene Droudge came in for Gary Cenerrazzo at right back and Mark Ramsay started on the bench to allow an opportunity for young Jon Robertson. Paul McQuade started up front and he was to give Rob Jones in the heart of the Hibernian defence a tough time.

Cowden opened brightly and passed the ball around well without creating any meaningful chances until Ross Chisholm rather oddly headed against his own cross bar under little pressure from any Cowden players. Cowden gained in confidence and continued to press. A goal wasn't far away and it came when Paul McQuade was brought down by Rob Jones just inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot after consulting his assistant. Brian Fairbairn stepped up and expertly rifled his penalty high to the keepers' right and Cowden were deservedly in the lead.

This seemed to spur Hibs into action but the Cowden defence managed to readily repel the Hibernian attacks with Davie Hay only being called into action once to tip over a fierce John Rankin shot. Hibs were pressing more but Joe Mbu and Sandy Hodge were doing an expert job of marshalling the defence and ensuring that the Hibs strikers had little chance of finding an equaliser. Cowden were still creating the better openings with the lively McQuade having the best chance before the end of the first half. His low shot just ran wide of Grof's far post to the relief of the Hibs fans in the crowd. Darren McGregor too came close to extending Cowden's lead.

The second half began with Cowden controlling the play and limiting the Hibs side to many long hopeful balls up the park which Mbu and Hodge dealt with easily. With Hibs being limited to long range efforts and unable to create any significant chances, it was up to Cowden to show the SPL side how it is done. Mark Ramsay though contrived to somehow poke the ball wide when it seemed easier to score from within the 6-yard box. Cowden didn't have to wait long to double their lead when Dene Droudge picked the ball up on the edge of the Hibs box. His low cross found the in-rushing Marek Tomana who calmly placed a left footed shot high into the top corner of the net. It was no more than the Slovakian deserved after a first-class performance.

Hibs again tried to push forward to get back into the game but the midfield partnership of Jay Shields and Darren McGregor broke up the Hibs attacks with the defence mopping up any scraps. The Hibs players were clearly getting frustrated and could make no headway. Their frustration was epitomised by the sending to the stand of manager Mixu after he felt Hibs should have had a penalty for handball. Cowden brought on a host of youngsters but remained on cruise control as they strolled to a comfortable win over a Hibs side which featured 9 men with SPL experience.

COWDEN:

Davie Hay – stunning save in first half and a polished performance from The Cat. 8/10

Dene Droudge – solid performance from the youngster who nullified any Hibs attacks down the wing. 8/10

Joe Mbu – fantastic showing. Rapidly becoming a cult hero with the support and if he carries on in the same vein will be a big player for Cowden. 9/10

Sandy Hodge – another accomplished showing from the ex-Alloa centre half. Dealt with the Hibs attacks comfortably. 8/10

Kenny Adamson – hard working performance who played a huge role in Cowden getting a second successive clean sheet. 9/10

Darren McGregor – never put a foot wrong in the centre of midfield and controlled the play alongside Jay Shields. 9/10

Jay Shields – super performance from the ex-Hibs player who worked his socks off controlling the Hibs centre midfielders. His razor sharp tackling and non-stop approach drove Hibs to distraction. 9/10

Brian Fairbairn – his skills were clear to see as he put on a show for the Cowden fans. Extremely well taken penalty. 9/10

Marek Tomana – most creative player on the park who helped create many openings for Cowden. 9/10

Jon Robertson – good performance from the youngster who put in a lot of work. 7/10

Paul McQuade – put in a barrowload of effort and made many clever runs. Unlucky to not get a deserved goal. 9/10

Subs

Sam Morris – replaced Hay near the end. Dealt easily with whatever Hibs could muster. 6/10

Gary Cenerrazzo – caused problems to the Hibs defence with some probing runs late on. 7/10

John Ferguson – was a nuisance to the Hibs defence and got stuck in. 7/10

Mark Ramsay – came on at half time and terrorised the Hibs left back. 8/10

Matt Lynch – competent display when he came on near the end. 6/10

Steven McDonald – little time to make any real impact on game. 6/10

Danny Mackay – worked hard and linked up well with the rest of the team. 7/10

Elgin City 0, Cowdenbeath 2

Date: Saturday 26th July 2008

Competition: Challeng Cup - 1st round

Venue: Borough Briggs

Attendance: 379

Man of the Match: Joe Mbu

Cowden made the long journey north to tackle Elgin in the Challenge Cup first round. The team was unchanged from that which played against Dundee United the week before. There was a healthy contingent of Cowden fans present to cheer the team onto the pitch and the players responded with an initial 10 minutes of fast flowing football. The opening goal wasn't long away and it came after just 13 minutes. Mark Ramsay's out swinging corner was headed down by Joe Mbu and Darren McGregor pounced to hit a left foot shot into the bottom corner of the net via the post.

Cowden pressed for a second to kill off a lacklustre Elgin side and again had the ball in the back of the net but the offside flag denied Paul McQuade. The hard working McQuade was proving to be a real thorn in the home side's defence as was John Gemmell. Gemmell's header from a corner was the only other noteworthy effort of the first half.

The second half followed the pattern of the first half with Cowden dominating the play and limiting Elgin to hopeful crosses into the box. The Cowden rearguard of Mbu and Hodge were dealing ably with everything thrown at them. Gradually the pressure built up on the Elgin defence and we finally got the killer second goal 10 minutes from time. Full back Kenny Adamson's cross was flicked on at the near post and Paul McQuade was on hand to lash the ball into the back of the net.

Cowden began to turn the screw even more with Tomana controlling the midfield after coming off the bench. Another sub young John Ferguson was played through and his right foot shot across the goal just went wide. Cowden though comfortably ran down the clock with a bit of class to spare and won the game 2-0 to book their place in round 2.

COWDEN:

Davie Hay – solid performance from ‘The Cat' as he dealt with everything that came his way. 8/10

Gary Cennerazzo – good performance from the young full-back whose driving runs were always a problem for Elgin. 8/10

Joe Mbu – great competitive debut from the big man as he strolled through the game without any problems. 9/10

Sandy Hodge – kept the Elgin strikers at bay and was solid alongside Mbu. 8/10

Kenny Adamson – like Cennerazzo was very good defensively and got forward often enough to bother the Elgin defence. 8/10

Darren McGregor – a comeback goal and a good performance from the centre midfielder. Helped to limit Elgin to very few chances. 9/10

Jay Shields– tough tackling midfielder controlled the midfield and his passing was first class.9/10

Mark Ramsay – probing runs caused many problems for the Elgin defence. 8/10

Brian Fairbairn – crossing and dribbling helped him to torment the Elgin full backs. 8/10

Paul McQuade – hard working display was rewarded with a goal. 9/01

John Gemmell – good show from the big striker who linked well with his team mates. 8/10

Sub (74 min); John Ferguson – not much time to make impact but looks a good prospect. 7/10

Sub (65 mins): Marek Tomana – passing and movement caused the tiring Elgin defence a lot of problems. 8/10

Sub (85 mins): Danny McKay – like Ferguson had little time to make impact but worked hard and passed well. 7/10

Cowdenbeath 2, Dundee United XI 4

Cowden went down to their third defeat of the pre season build up against a young Dundee United side in front of 137 fans at Central Park.

Also in the Arabs starting line up were two players who had featured against us last season whilst out on loan – David Goodwillie, who proved to be a thorn in our side in the derby games with Raith Rovers, and Marco Andreoni who spent the second half of last term with Airdrie United.

Copyright: Central Fife TimesCowden made two changes to the starting line up which had lost to Dundee the previous week. Scott Linton came in for Kenny Adamson, while the newly resigned Darren McGregor took over from Jon Robertson who dropped to the bench.

Cowden opened the game brightly and after seven minutes Gemmell saw a free kick blocked by the visiting defensive wall. Minutes later we had a great chance to open the scoring when Fairbairn spit the United defence with a well placed pass to Gemmell who saw his right footed shot pushed away by McGovern. The ball then fell into the path of Ramsay who was unable to connect with an open goal looming.

On the 15 minute mark a header from McGregor set up Ramsay but his header drifted over the bar.

Two minutes later McQuade had the ball in the back of the net following a knockdown by Gemmell but he was judged to be offside.

The visitors had their first real threat on the Cowden goal after 20 minutes when a 20 yard shot from Androni was comfortably saved by Hay.

On the half hour mark Hay done well again to saved an angled shot from United's Spanish trialist.

Two minutes later however the deadlock was broken when Shields fouled the trialist in the box and Marco Andreoni slotted home the resulting spot kick.

Andreoni quickly looked for a second goal and sent a curling 18 yard shot just past the post.

Cowden however grabbed a deserved equaliser after 36 minutes when Fairbairn delivered an inch perfect cross from the right across the face of the visiting goal to John Gemmell who sent home a low shot.

As the interval approached Fairbairn saw a header tipped over the bar by McGovern.

The start of the second half saw the visitors introduce comeback man Daly in place of Russell.

Copyright: Central Fife TimesCowden once again started the half brightly with a long throw in from Linton falling into the path of McQuade who shot over. Minutes later Fairbairn was once again denied by McGovern who turned his shot round the post.

United once again took the lead from the penalty spot after 55 minutes when Hodge brought down Fleming and David Goodwillie slotted the ball past Hay.

Four minutes later Cowden grabbed an equaliser when Mark Ramsay slotted home a low shot through a crowded visiting goal mouth following a Fairbairn corner.

We then made a double substitution on the hour mark with Roberts on and Mackay replacing McGregor and Ramsay.

The visitors restored their lead after 62 minutes when the Spanish Trialist headed home from close range.

Copyright: Central Fife TimesCowden then had a few chances to grab an equaliser for the third time with McQuade heading wide following a Linton free kick then McQuade broke through the United defence and appeared to be brought down but his penalty claims were waived aside.

With nine minutes remaining John Daly completed the scoring when he slotted the ball into an empty net at the back post following a cross from Androni.

COWDEN: David Hay, Gary Cennerazzo (Trialist 64), Scott Linton, Darren McGregor (Danny Mackay 60), Joe Mbu, Sandy Hodge, Brian Fairbairn (John Ferguson 72), Jay Shields, John Gemmell, Mark Ramsay (Jon Robertson 60), Paul McQuade. Sub not used – Trialist.

Cowdenbeath 1, Dundee 5

Copyright: Central Fife TimesA full strength Dundee side proved too strong for Cowden in our opening home game of the pre season build up.

Cowden had a good chance to open the scoring after 15 minutes when Robertson put Fairbairn through on goal but former Scotland stopper Rab Douglas pulled off a great low save to deny him his first Cowden goal. Soon after a cross from Fairbairn was met by Gemmell but his header went well wide.

The Dens Parkers took the lead on 32 minutes when a free kick was cleared by the Cowden defence into the path of Forsyth who crossed from the right to Colin McMenamin who headed home from five yards. Seven minutes from the break Dundee almost doubled their advantage when a shot from Paton was turned round the post by Hay and from the resulting corner a shot from Antoine-Curier was cleared off the line by Shields.

The second half commenced with a substitution from each side, Adamson was replaced by Traub, while Dundee introduced midweek signing Mearns to replace their Trialist.

Dundee went two up in 53 minutes when McMenamin sent over a cr oss which was met by Mickel Antoine-Curier who chested the ball down and fired home from five yards.

Two minutes later Cowden however pulled a goal back when Fairbairn beat McKenzie on the right wing to fire a cross over to Paul McQuade who fired home a low shot from six yards into the empty net.

Copyright: Central Fife TimesDundee restored their two goal advantage on 57 minutes when McMenamin whipped over a cross which was powerfully headed home by Antoine-Curier for his second goal of the afternoon.

There was then a rush of substitutions from both sides and former Cowden loanee Bryan Deasley , who replaced O'Brien just after the hour mark, came back to haunt us with two goals in the closing 13 minutes. Firstly a long pass from Mearns was picked up by the youngster who ran through on goal to slot the ball past Hay and with eight minutes to go he bagged his br ace when he flicked the ball home following a cross from fellow sub Darquin.

Whitehill Welfare 0, Cowdenbeath 2

The ups and downs of pre season games continued on Wednesday night when we ran out winners over East of Scotland League champions Whitehill Welfare at Ferguson Park .

A much changed Cowden side opened the game brightly against a Welfare side which had former Central Parkers Jack Lynch and Darren Pryde in their line up. New recruit Brian Fairbain had a few good chances to open the scoring but it was the home side who came closest to breaking the deadlock after 24 minutes when a cross from Lynch was met by McDougall who saw his header crash off the cross bar and a minute later a Moffat shot was cleared off the line by our trialist centre half.

The deadlock was broken after 63 minutes however when John Ferguson slotted home a low shot from 14 yards. With five minutes remaining Mark Boyle settled the result with a well taken second goal, coolly slotting the ball past the keeper from ten yards.

COWDEN: Sam Morris, Dene Droudge, Gary Cennerazzo, Andy Traub, Trialist, Trialist (Danny Mackay 31), Brian Fairbairn (Mark Boyle 67), Trialist (Trialist 67), Steven McDonald (John Ferguson 59), John Gemmell, Matt Lynch (Marek Tomana 55).

Vale of Leithen 4, Cowdenbeath 0

After the comfortable win over Premier Division Edinburgh City two days previously Cowden suffered a shock defeat from East of Scotland League First Division side Vale of Leithen at Victoria Park. After a promising start Cowden were shocked in the 27 th minute when Aaron Sommerville sent a looping 20 yarder past Hay and six minutes later he added a second with an angled shot from eight yards. After the break we had two good chances to get back into the game. Firstly a shot from the trialist substitute came off the bar, then Adamson lashed a shot off the crossbar. However two well taken goals from Chris Graham after 67 and 73 minutes sealed the borders sides win.

TEAM: David Hay, Trialist, Kenny Adamson, Trialist (Danny Lennon 59), Andy Traub, Sandy Hodge, Mark Ramsay, Jay Shields, Paul McQuade, Jon Robertson, Derek Fleming (Trialist 42). Subs not used – Trialist & Sam Morris.

Cowden opened their pre-season programme in convincing style this afternoon with a 5-1 win over East of Scotland Premier Division side Edinburgh City at Peffermill.

The first half squad saw quite a few trialists in the line up as well as new signings Sandy Hodge and Brian Fairbairn. The only goal of the opening 45 minutes came on the half hour when youth player Steven McDonald slotted home a low shot from a Ramsay cross.

Edinburgh City drew level after 65 minutes when Robbie Ross took advantage of a defensive lapse but four minutes later Cowden restored their lead when a corner from new boy Derek Fleming was headed home by Dene Droudge. As Cowden took a firm grip of the game Paul McQuade added a brace in a seven minute spell before Jon Robertson added a fifth goal with ten minutes remaining.
