MATCH REPORT : Dundee United 1-1 Cowdenbeath

PostedJune 30, 2021

Cowdenbeath visited Dundee United’s High Performance Centre at St Andrews this evening to take on Premiership outfit United in a pre-season friendly.

Gary Bollan’s side lined up with Tom Courts and Liam Fox in the opposite dugout on a beautiful sunny evening. A strong Dundee United line up looked lively in the opening stages and Cammy Gill pulled off two or three good stops.

Cowden came more into the game but in the 30th minute United took the lead. Peter Pawlett was awarded a foul on the edge of the box. Lawrence Shankland promptly stepped up to curl the free kick round the wall and into the net.

The away side hit back straight away and Kris Renton burst through to see his shot saved by Adams in the United goal. The equaliser wasn’t long in coming though. Cowden moved the ball slickly down the left and Liam Buchanan smartly laid off the ball for Kris Renton to slot home in 35 minutes.

The teams then changed over level at 1-1 and United fielded an almost entirely different XI in the second half. Cowden too made a series of substitutions in the second 45. United went close when Gill pulled off a fine save low to his right from a Kai Fotheringham shot. The best effort of the half came from Cowden’s Liam Buchanan in 61 minutes. He seized on a half chance to hit a swerving, dipping shot from 20 yards which the United keeper somehow clawed past the post with his fingertips. Later Buchanan broke through into the box only to be felled by a last ditch challenge which saw Cowden’s penalty claim turned aside by the referee.

The match thus ended as a 1-1 draw. A very worthwhile workout for Cowden and a pleasing result.
