After three successive draws, we head to Galabank on Saturday knowing we need to win our four remaining cinch League Two games and for Elgin City to lose theirs as well as over turning a -11 goal deficit, to avoid finishing bottom of the table. Certainly a tall order with a Play Final against Bonnyrigg Rose, or Fraserburgh or Buckie Thistle being the more likely outcome.
While we were drawing with Stirling Albion, Peter Murphy’s side won 1-0 at Ochilview to officially win a promotion play off spot.
The previous meetings of the sides this season has seen three Annan wins. Back in August at Central Park we led 1-0 at the break through an early Robbie Buchanan goal but a Tony Wallace brace, with his equaliser coming from the spot, and an Iain Anderson goal turned the game to give the Galabankies a 3-1 win. In October with David McGurn in interim charge we went down 1-0 at Galabank with Lewis Hunter scoring early in the second half.
Their second visit to Central Park in January saw another 3-1 reverse. Wallace had once again scored from the penalty spot with Liam Buchanan levelling after coming on as a sub to replace the injured Andy Barrowman. As we looked to be heading to be on level terms at the break Tommy Goss gave Annan the lead before Craig Barr was sent off just before the hour mark. Aidan Smith then settled the game with a retaken spot kick after David McGurn had saved his initial effort but Craig Thomson was penalised for encroaching the box.
Murphy’s side really took off in mid Febuary and have won seven of their last nine games with their only defeats coming against Champions Kelty and Albion Rovers.
Last Saturday saw the long serving Steven Swinglehurst come off the bench to make his 300th appearance for Annan.
