The Fife Cup Resumes

Posted April 14, 2023

Back in season 2019/20, the Fife Cup competition was underway with 3 matches having already been played. Then Covid struck and matters necessarily went into abeyance. A little while back the Fife Football Association though reconvened and made various decisions.

1. That the 2019/20 competition be abandoned and that the trophy would not be awarded for that season
2. That the competition in subsequent years up to and including season 2022/23 was suspended and not played
3. That the competition for the Fife Cup would resume for season 2023/24

The Fife Cup of course is one of the last of the traditional County FA trophies still to be competed for in the same manner as when it was introduced some 140 years ago in season 1882/83. In recent times membership swelled to 8 following the accession of Hill of Beath Hawthorn, Kelty Hearts and Dundonald Bluebell after they became senior clubs and obtained their SFA Licence. We are now pleased to confirm that the membership of the Fife FA has been increased to 9 clubs as St Andrews United have also now been admitted to membership. We offer them a very warm welcome. United are not though the first side from St Andrews to be members of the Fife FA and play in the Fife Cup as St Andrews University competed from 1889 until 1935. They also entered the 1950/51 competition before resigning from the Association as their ground then did not meet SFA requirements.

The draw for the 2023/24 competition has been made and it was agreed that if clubs so wished they could play ties in that competition during the current season if both clubs were agreeable. The draw for the 2023/24 Fife Cup is as follows:

Round 1
Kelty Hearts v Raith Rovers

Round 2
Kelty Hearts/Raith Rovers v Hill of Beath Hawthorn
St Andrews United v Dunfermline Athletic
Dundonald Bluebell v Cowdenbeath
East Fife v Burntisland Shipyard

The Fife FA is also pleased to confirm that the competition will get underway on Tuesday 25 April 2023 at The Clayton Caravan Park Recreation Ground, St Andrews when St Andrews United will make their bow in the competition with Dunfermline Athletic supplying the opposition. Kick off is at 7.45pm.
