Cowden manager Calum Elliot is currently focused on enhancing the club's resources both on and off the pitch. To that end, he has today concluded arrangements for Kevin Smith to join Cowdenbeath FC in the dual role of player/assistant manager. Kevin joins us on expiry of his existing deal with Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic where he was their top scorer last season in the SPFL. Kevin's career began with Leeds United back in 2005 and he also played for Wrexham and Notts County south of the Border. In Scotland. he has been with both Dundee clubs, Dumbarton and Queen of the South as well as Raith Rovers. And, of course, before moving to Bonnyrigg, Kevin was a great fan favourite in his 8 year spell with East Fife.
On finalising matters, Calum said, "I’m delighted Kevin has joined the club not only as a player but to form an integral part of the coaching team alongside Paul Parkin who has been assisting us on the coaching side. Kevin is an outstanding football player, vastly experienced, his knowledge and intelligence will be invaluable in the seasons ahead. He’s scored goals at every club he’s been at. To be able to support Kevin on the next stage of his footballing journey is something I really look forward to doing as he’s got so much to offer off the park, but on the park he’s going to be massive for the team. His relationship with both myself and Parky will allow him to have full focus on the pitch and we can help him adjust to the extra responsibilities which will come his way. I fully expect him to be a real talismanic figure for the group as well as a really exciting signing for the supporters."
After agreeing the deal with Cowden, Kevin shared his initial thoughts with us - "I’m extremely excited to be at the football club and looking forward to working alongside Calum Elliot who I’ve known for a long time. Cowdenbeath is a club steeped in history which was part of the attraction in coming to Central Park. We are looking forward to working with the talented group of players at the club and the aim is to get the club challenging at the top end of the table.”
