Biography:

Bobby Gilfillan (Centre-forward, 1955-59) – Born in Cowdenbeath, Bobby came from a footballing family. A product of Cowdenbeath Royals, he was signed by Cowden and farmed out to Dundonald Bluebell. He soon burst through into the Cowden 1st team and his goal instinct had the scouts queuing up at Central Park. After Cowden turned down offers from Norwich and Hearts, Newcastle managed to sign Bobby for £4,000 just after he starred for Cowden in the 1959 League Cup semi-final. At Central Park, he had scored 49 League goals in 78 games. Bobby though remained part-time at Newcastle, as otherwise he would have been called up for national service. He therefore worked in the local pits and that made it difficult for him at St James Park. His career then took him to St Johnstone, Raith Rover, Southend and Doncaster Rovers. He won two 4th Division championship medals with Doncaster. He also appeared on the STV show ‘Dance Party Roof’ when with Cowden as a member of the skiffle group ‘the Red Hawks’. Bobby passed away in 2012.
